Opening the Eyes. Part Two.

When we see the “Treasure Tower” chapter of the Lotus Sutra, we find Shakyamuni Buddha,Taho Buddha, and the ten directions' Buddha who are incarnations. Why had they gathered? "Came here to let Law hold out for a long time". When we suppose that the three Buddha minds trying to propagate the Lotus Sutra and give to all the children of the Buddha of the future, we understand that their concern and compassion are even greater than those of a father and mother who see their only child inflicted with big suffering. Honen, however, shows not the least concern about their compassion, but would tightly shut the gates of the Lotus Sutra so that no one would have access to it in the latter days of the Law. Like a person who tricks a demented child into throwing away a treasure, he tries to let them discard the Lotus Sutra. How cruel his mind is!

If someone is about to kill your father and mother, don't you try to inform your father and mother? If an unfilial son who got drunk is about to kill his father and mother, shouldn't you try to stop him? If an evil person is about to set fire to the temples and pagodas, shouldn't you try to stop him? If your only child is seriously ill, shouldn't you try to cure a child with moxibustion? Those people who keep Japanese Zen and Nembutsu followers intact and do not stop them is said as follows. “If the person feigns oneself and gets close to him without the mercy, namely this person is his enemy”.

I, Nichiren,am sovereign, teacher, and father and mother for all the people of Japan. But the priests of the Tendai sect are the most implacable enemy for the people. “One who rids him of evil is acting as his parent”. One who does not have faiths is never freed oneself from the sufferings of birth and death. Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, was cursed by all the followers of non-Buddhist and labeled as an unmitigated villain. The Great Teacher T'ien-t'ai was regarded with intense enmity by the three sects of the south and seven sects of the north, and Tokuichi of Japan blamed him saying that Tientai had used his three-inch tongue to try to destroy the five-foot body of the Buddha. The Great Teacher Dengyo was disparaged by the priests of Nara who have said “Saicho has never gone to the capital of Tang China”. But these all were incurred because of the Lotus Sutra and these are therefore no shame for three people. To be praised by foolish person is the worst shame!

Now that I have incurred the wrath of the authorities, the priests of the Tendai and Shingon sect will think that this is glad. They are mysterious and shameless people. In the first place Shakyamuni Buddha appeared in the saha world, Kumrajiva entered the Ch'in dynasty of China, and Dengyou went to China. Aryadeva and Aryasimha bodhisattvas abandoned themselves for the Law. Bodhisattva Medicine King offered his elbow and burnt it for lighting the world, and Prince Jogu stripped off the skin of his hand for copying the sutra. Shakyamuni, when he was a bodhisattva, offered his flesh to save the hawk which starved, and another time, when he was Gyobo bodhisattva, he used his own bone as a pen to write down the Buddha's teachings. Tien-tai has said that “the propagation chosen is only accorded to the conditions of that times”. The Buddha's Law depends on the conditions of respective times. The banishment to the island of me, Nichiren, is a small suffering in this present life and is not deplorable. I am great joyful because in future lives I will enjoy big happiness!

Opening the Eyes.

But the men of the Tendai school [who do not refute misleading teachings] are all great enemies of the people.

But the priests of the Tendai sect are the great deadly foes of the people.

[As Chang-an has noted,] “One who rids the offender of evil is acting as his parent”.

“One who rids him of evil is acting as his parent”.

One who has not conceived a desire for the way can never free oneself from the sufferings of birth and death.

One who does not have faiths can never be freed oneself from the sufferings of birth and death.

Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, was cursed by all the followers of non-Buddhist teachings and labeled as a man of great evil. The Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai was regarded with intense enmity by the three schools of the south and seven schools of the north, and Tokuitsu of Japan criticized him for using his three-inch tongue to try to destroy the five-foot body of the Buddha. The Great Teacher Dengyō was disparaged by the priests of Nara, who said, “Saichō has never been to the capital of T’ang China!”.

Opening the Eyes. Part Two.

Chang-an comments on this as follows: “One who destroys or brings confusion to the Buddha’s teachings is betraying them.

One who destroys the Buddha's Law is the enemy inside the Buddha's Law".

“If one befriends another person but lacks the mercy to correct him, one is in fact his enemy”.

If the person feigns oneself and gets close to him without the mercy, namely this person is his enemy”.

But one who reprimands and corrects an offender is a voice-hearer who defends the Buddha’s teachings, a true disciple of the Buddha.

However, one who corrects him is a true hearer who defends the Buddha's Law, and that person is my true disciple.

One who rids the offender of evil is acting as his parent.

One who rids him of evil is acting as his parent.

Those who reproach offenders are disciples of the Buddha.

Those who reproach sinners well are my disciples.

The Writing to the Lord Shijo Kingo. (Tatsunokuchi Persecution).

   September 16, 1271. 58 years old.

I cannot adequately express my gratitude for your frequent letters.

I cannot adequately express my gratitude about your frequent letters.

At the time of my persecution on the twelfth, not only did you accompany me to Tatsunokuchi, but also you declared that you would die by my side. This can only be called wondrous.

Be that as it may, at the time of my persecution on the 12th day, not only did you accompany me to Tatsunokuchi, but also you declared that you would die together with me. This surprise unutterable.

How many are the places where I have thrown away my life in past existences for the sake of my wife and children, lands and followers!

How many were the places where I have thrown away my life in past existences for the sake of my wife and children, my land and followers?

I have given up my life on the mountains and the seas, on the rivers, on the seashore, and by the roadside.

I have perhaps abandoned my life at the mountains and the seas, on the rivers, on the seashore, and at the roadside.

Never once, however, did I die for the Lotus Sutra or suffer persecution for the daimoku. Hence none of the ends I met enabled me to attain Buddhahood.

However, these were not the sake of the Lotus Sutra or the persecution of the daimoku namely Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, hence my lives that I had thrown away and persecutions were not factors to become Buddha.

Because I did not attain Buddhahood, the seas and rivers where I threw away my life are not Buddha lands.

Because these were not factors to become Buddha, the seas and rivers where I threw away my life are not Buddha's land supposedly.

Gosho 蒙古事 About the Mongolia.

Nichiren is the emissary of the Lotus Sutra; the Japanese are like King Mihirakula, who eliminated Buddhism throughout Jambudvīpa.

Nichiren is the emissary of the Lotus Sutra; Japanese people look like King Mihirakula, who destructed Buddhism of the whole world.

The Mongol empire may be like King Himatala, a messenger from heaven sent to punish those hostile to the votary of the Lotus Sutra.

The Mongol empire looks like King Himatala, they seem to penalize hostiles of the votary of the Lotus Sutra as a messenger from heavens.

If the Japanese repent in their present existence, they will be like King Ajātashatru, who became a follower of the Buddha, cured his white leprosy, and prolonged his life by forty years; though lacking the roots of faith, he reached the first stage of security, and in his present life gained the realization that phenomena neither are born nor perish.

   With my deep respect.

Also, if the Japanese confess their sins now, they will look like King Ajatashatru, who became a follower of the Buddha, cured his white leprosy, and prolonged his life forty years; though he had no roots of faiths, he could reach the first stage of faiths by the power of Buddha, and he himself gained the realization that phenomena neither are born nor perish.

Very truly yours.
