Gosho 金吾殿御返事(大師講御書)四 Letter to Lord Ota Kingo. 4.

山門なんどもいに()しえにも百千万億倍すぎて動揺とうけ給はり候。

Gosho 金吾殿御返事(大師講御書)三 Letter to Lord Ota Kingo.3

 これほどの僻事(ひがごと)申して候へば、()・死の二罪の内は一定(いちじょう)と存ぜしが、いまゝでなにと申す事も候はぬは不思議とをぼへ候。

Gosho 金吾殿御返事(大師講御書)二 Letter to Lord Ota Kingo.2

(そもそも)()の法門の事、(かん)(もん)有無(うむ)()りて弘まるべきか、弘まらざるか。

末法の本仏の立場で法華経一部二十八品を直弟子日興上人に口伝した書【御義口伝 下】要点解説(13)

【寿量品二十七箇の大事】

第十三 常住此説法の事

御義口伝に云く、常住とは法華経の行者の住処なり。此とは娑婆世界(注)なり、山谷曠野を指して此とは説き給う。

 説法とは、一切衆生の語言の音声が本有の自受用智の説法なり。

 末法に入つて説法とは、南無妙法蓮華経なり。 今、日蓮等の類いの説法、是なり。



娑婆世界

「大地」を意味する梵語 sahāの音訳で、この世つまり地球上の世界を意味する。

 妙法蓮華経如来 寿量品第十六で釈尊は、三千大千世界(銀河系宇宙)に無数の仏国土(惑星)が存在し、仏が有縁の仏国土に出現し、衆生を仏になる道に化導すると解き明かしている。

 近年、ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡の観測により、太陽系外の膨大な数の恒星の周りに生命の存在の可能性のある惑星が存在する事がわかり、
今から三千年前に釈尊によって説かれた【妙法蓮華経 如来寿量品第十六で説かれた事が裏付けられて来ている。

大師講に鵞目五

連給び候ひ了んぬ。此の大師講

三、四年に始めて候が、

今年は第一にて候ひつ

るに候。

(そもそも)、此の法門の事、勘文

の有無に依りて弘まるべきか、弘まらざるか。

去年方々に申して

候ひしかども、いなせ(否応)の返事

大師講に()(もく)(れん)、給び候ひ了んぬ。

I have received the five strings of coins you sent me for the annual lecture on the doctrines of the Great Teacher T'ien-t'ai.

I received the coins being linked together of five for the lecture of the Great Teacher Tientai.

此の大師講三、四年に始めて候が、今年は第一にて候ひつるに候。

We began this annual lecture dedicated to the memory of the great teacher three or four years ago, but this year’s has been the most successful.

I had begun the lecture of the GreatTeacher Tientai three or four years before, but this year is best creditable.

Gosho 問注得意抄 四 The Points to be Careful of in the Court 4

(くの(ごと)きの事、(しょ)(さつ)に尽くし(がた)し、心を以て()斟酌(しんしゃく)有るべきか。

It is difficult to explain things such as these adequately in a letter, so I hope that you will give the matter the utmost consideration.

26. Nichiren Pray for Rain Hard. 6

         Japanese edition


The farms have finished drying under hot weather.

One farmer moved a pail with a tool of balance.

The contents of the pail are the water which he drew from the well. He carried it any number of times from sunrise to sunset. It was for the sake of a precious farm. Still that is insufficient.

The farmer put a pail while being drenched with sweat. The water does not reach half.

A baby approached to there and was going to drink water. The child had been dry, too.

“Dad, water,water”.

The farmer noticed a child, but it was late. The child has knocked over a pail.

Father rushed in wonder and scooped the water which flowed, but the water was breathed in to the dry ground.

He pushed away a child unconsciously. The baby weeps loud.

That sound startled him and his composure in part returned.

The wife came there and protected the child and rebuked a husband in tearful voice.

“What are you doing to your child?”.

The wife holds a baby in her arms and enters the house. There was old mother who couched upon the bed in their house.

While the farmer heard a baby cry, he crouched down in a ground and swatted the soil many times.

His tears flow like squeezing it. On the back of the hand which grasped soil, tears fell down drop by drop. He already reached the limit of his patience.

However, how can these things be? The farmer noticed that drops of liquid were either falling into ground around.

He was surprised and looked up at the sky.

He saw a piece of cloud was in a head.

The rain came pattering.

His strength had come back. He came alive.

“It's rainy!”.

The farmer went home hastily.

"It's rainy, it is raining!".

The wife, the child, mother who was sleeping looked up to outside.

It rains quietly. This was like honeydew which quenched all. The sky became the slightly cloudy weather and drops of water came falling slowly.

The people appeared to the road without thinking. All of they were exposed to the rain with joy.

In the pond, a crowd looked up at the sky and has been making a fuss.

“Rain, it rains!”.

The whole sky is covered in a gray cloud in a moment.

There are a person embracing each other, a person bursting into tears and a person washing a face with rain.

Shijo Kingo and Toki Jonin who prayed rejoiced hand in hand, too. Ota Jomyo who is calm and composed always is filled with tears.

The voice of the daimoku still echoes while the drum of the Hokibo sounds.

Thunder made a sound along with light then. The roaring sound shook the ground, and a shout of joy became still more high-pitched.

The crowd noticed a figure of Nichiren before long.

He is chanting the daimoku absorbedly. Even if it rains, even if is not rain, he is praying hard. The present phenomenon called the rain was not a problem and his figure seemed to teach that attaining Buddhahood in the future was important than anything. The crowd took the headgear and sat straight not minding rain, and getting wet in the ground, and they all put hands together at the same time. The emotion of thanks for Nichiren let people work so naturally. Nichiren before eyes was the savior whom they should look up to as God or living Buddha for them. The beginning was simple curious spectators. They were the people who totally did not have the faiths of the Lotus Sutra. But all public around the pond has begun to just chant it aloud to a drumbeat.

“Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo…”.

The people surrounded Nichiren who got wet in the rain and sat down on a poor straw mat. They had integrated with both the monk and laity of Nichiren's sect this day as though they were part of it.

Gosho 問注得意抄 三 The The Points to be Careful of in the Court 3

(たと)ひ敵人等悪口(あっく)を吐くと(いえど)も、各々(おのおの)当身の事一・二度までは聞かざるが如くすべし。

Even if your opponents in the case should happen to utter abuse, and even if it is something that concerns yourselves, the first and second time this happens I believe you should act as if you have heard nothing.

Even if your opponent criticizes you, you should act as if you have heard nothing when is the first and second of slander.

三度に及ぶの時、顔貌(げんみょう)を変ぜず、()(げん)を出ださず、(なん)()を以て申すべし。

If they continue yet a third time, without either changing your expression or using rude language, you must answer with gentle words.

If they yet continue a third slander, without changing your complexion or without using rude language, you must answer with gentle words.

各々は一処の同輩なり。(わたくし)(おい)ては全く違恨(いこん)無きの由之(よしこれ)を申さるべきか。

You must make sure to say something like “All of us are colleagues at the same place. We bear you absolutely no personal grudges”.

You should say to them in this way, “All of us are colleague of the same place. We bear you absolutely no personal grudges”.

御供(おとも)雑人(ぞうにん)等に()く能く禁止を加へ、喧嘩(けんか)を出だすべからざるか。

And I think you should carefully warn those in your retinue and your servants to avoid provoking fights.

26. Nichiren Pray for Rain Hard. 5

      From the Biography of Nichiren Daishonin


The Kamakura suburbs.

Under the strong ultraviolet rays, a party of Nichiren go ahead through the country road. They walked the road of the slightly elevated foot of a mountain. A crowd follows them.

There was the pond surrounded by forests.

The party of members spread a straw mat in the edge of pond.

Hokibo and others carried an incense burner and a sutra reading desk and began preparations.

A crowd was disgusted.

"Do they pray in such a remote place?".

“In addition, are they only slight number of this believers?”.

Shijo Kingo quiets audience at the rearmost place.

“Everybody, prayer of the priest Nichiren begin. Please be quiet!”.

Kingo talks gently for the townsfolk and the farmer unusually.

Nichiren took one piece of board out of a chest slowly and wrote a prayer sentence by the writing brush quickly.

And he put a board into the pond slowly and put hands together and chanted "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo" and title three times powerfully.

After this, the religious service that read the chapter of means of the second and the chapter of Buddha's life span of the sixteenth aloud has begun.


Yasumori and Yoritsuna of the clammy foreheads watched the sky reproachfully in the hall of the Kamakura regent.

The flower of the garden is about to die.

Ryoukan walked around the room busily in Gokurakuji. Ryoukan cannot touch the dainty food of the low dining table either. He cannot do anything for oneself tormented by uneasiness.


Sutra-chanting of Nichiren continues.

“’Buddha always holds this thought. How can I do if I let all creatures walk the supreme road and let them gain the existence of Buddha early?’. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo…”.

Hokibo Nikko beats a drum. Nichiren has begun to chant a title to this sound.

Nichiren had given disciples a strict order beforehand, said "Does not stop the chanting until it rains".

Time to fight to a finish came. All disciples of Nichiren, and Kingo and Jonin and Jomyo of the strong believers follow Nichiren with a desperate chanting.

A crowd watched them for a while, but the scorching sky does not have the change.

The person who wave a neck and return appeared.

“Cannot be that it rains. I have stopped being able to believe in anybody”.

At that time, one drop of liquid fell to a big leaf of the side.

Gosho 問注得意抄 二 The Points to be Careful of in the Court 2

()成敗(せいばい)甲乙(こうおつ)(しばら)く之を置く。(さき)立ちて(うつ)(ねん)を開発せんか。

Setting aside for the moment the question of outcome, should you not, above all, take this as an opportunity to dispel your worry and gloom?

First of all, you should appeal for everyday discontents as the other problem the right or wrong of the trial.
