Gosho 観心本尊抄 The True Object of Worship 13

()くの如き本尊は在世五十余年に之れ無し八年の間にも(ただ)八品に限る、

During the entire fifty years of Shakyamuni’s teaching, only in the last eight years did he preach the twenty-eight chapters of the Lotus Sutra. Again, of all these chapters, only in the eight chapters did he reveal and transfer the object of devotion to the Bodhisattvas of the Earth.

There never was a Gohonzon like this during the fifty-odd years of Shakyamuni’s lifetime of teachings. Shakyamuni taught the Lotus Sutra over a period of eight years, but [this Gohonzon was transmitted] only through the eight core chapters.

The Gohonzon was not preached during the fifty-odd years of Shakyamuni's lifetime. Shakyamuni preached the Lotus Sutra over a period of eight years, moreover this Gohonzon was taught only through the eight chapters.

正像二千年の間は小乗の釈尊は()(しょう)・阿難を(きょう)()()し、(ごん)大乗並に()(はん)・法華経の迹門等の釈尊は文殊(もんじゅ)()(げん)等を以て脇士と為す

During the two millennia of the Former and Middle Days of the Law, statues were made showing Mahākāshyapa and Ānanda flanking the Shakyamuni Buddha of Hinayana, and Manjushrī and Universal Worthy flanking the Shakyamuni Buddha of the provisional Mahayana, the Nirvana Sutra, and the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra.

During the two thousand years of the Former and Middle Days of the Law, there were objects of worship that depicted Shakyamuni Buddha of Hinayana Buddhism accompanied by Mahakashyapa and Ananda. Others portrayed Shakyamuni Buddha of provisional Mahayana, the Nirvana Sutra, the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra, and so on, attended by Manjushri, Universally Worthy, and others.

During the two thousand years of the former or middle days of the Law, Mahakashyapa and Ananda were flanking the Shakyamuni Buddha of Hinayana, and Manjushri and Fugen, Universal Worthy, were flanking the Shakyamuni Buddha who had taught the provisional Mahayana, the Nirvana Sutra, the theory of the Lotus Sutra.

此等の仏をば正像(しょうぞう)に造り(えが)けども(いま)だ寿量の仏(ましま)さず、

Even though statues and paintings were made of these Shakyamuni Buddhas during the two millennia, no image or statue was made of the Buddha of the “Life Span” chapter.

Though these images and statues of the Buddhas were created during the periods of the Former and Middle Day of the Law, the Buddha expounded in the Life Span chapter of the Lotus Sutra has never existed before.

Though these images and statues of the Buddha was created and depicted during the periods of the former or middle day of Law, the Buddha of the Life Span chapter was not made yet.

末法に来入(らいにゅう)して始めて此の仏像出現せしむ可きか。

Only in the Latter Day of the Law will the representation of that Buddha appear.

25. The Showdown by the Rain in Gokurakuji Ryoukan and Nichiren 4

             Japanese edition


Suobo exchanged looks with Ilusawa and was reseated.

Nichiren continues it.

“If the priest Ryoukan was able to bring even one rain during seven days, Nichiren becomes disciple of him and keeps 250 religious precepts minutely, in addition I will recognize my mistake, and will show it to you throwing away the doctrine that I had said Nembutsu is the incessant sufferings of hell and said the religious precepts sect is a bandit”.

The audience was dumbfounded for Nichiren. It cannot by any possibility be true confronting an expert of praying for rain.

Suobo don't quite believe the evolution that occurred unexpectedly.

“Priest Nichiren. Is your word inviolate?”.

Nichiren asserted that it was true.

“If I showed him allegiance, Japan including my disciple will bow to the priest Ryoukan. To the contrary, these are clear that religious precepts of the priest Ryoukan are fault if it does not rain. Please surrender to the Lotus Sutra disinterestedly”.

Two people grasped each other's hands in unexpected tale.

“That's very hard to believe. Do you confront the priest Ryoukan really? Do you not have judiciousness?”.

Nichiren was self-composed as always.

“There are many examples which had determined a win and a defeat about praying for rain from yore. It is namely the Great Teacher Dengyou and Gomyo, also Shubin and Kobo. Let's have a showdown by praying for rain!”.

Two people especially called his attention to the fact that the matter is important.

“You cannot retract the present words. Do not forget!”.

Disciples of Nichiren were dumfounded.

Daishinbo, one of them, came running at the top of his speed.

“The priest, Ryoukan is a master of praying for rain! No one can match him at praying!”.

Nichiren turned his body squarely.

“I will bring it to an end by a result of reality. I defeat great self-conceit of Ryoukan and rescue his pain of the incessant sufferings of hell!”.


While Suobo and Ilusawa Nyudo guffaw, they run in the main street with quick light steps.

Two people thought.

The enemy of our bonze Ryoukan disappeared in this. They had been attacked severely by Nichiren so far, but that Nichiren attempted us by a reckless challenge. Cannot stop laughing.


The drought has become in earnest.

There was only the sun which burnt to all clear in the sky of the farms. The drought became more terrible only by wind sounding even if there was a cloudy day.

A farmer watched the rice that was about to die anxiously. And looked up at the sky bearing a grudge.

Present Japan does not have the serious drought. But, in those days when irrigation facilities were poor, serious famine was brought by a slight drought. The famine caused by the drought is still frequent all over the world. The human intelligence hardly prevent abnormal weather and it is helpless.

The era when science was undeveloped, the prayer by the religion were world common ultimate solutions measure for wonder of such nature. For the people who took every means, there was no possibility except praying.


Disciples and believers prayed led by Nichiren in the hall.

Nichiren did not change as always, but the disciples and supporters were different. Everyone has a serious look on face. There is not their own futures if it rains. Must not let our teacher be a disciple of Ryoukan. Their praying was tragic but even brave.

Gosho 観心本尊抄 The True Object of Worship 12

其の本尊の為体(ていたらく)、本師の娑婆の上に宝塔(くう)()塔中(たっちゅう)の妙法蓮華経の左右に釈迦()()(ぶつ)・多宝仏・釈尊の(きょう)()上行等の四菩薩・

The treasure tower sits in the air above the sahā world that the Buddha of the essential teaching [identified as the pure and eternal land]; Myoho-renge-kyo appears in the center of the tower with the Buddhas Shakyamuni and Many Treasures seated to the right and left, and, flanking them, the four bodhisattvas, followers of Shakyamuni, led by Superior Practices.

The appearance of the true object of worship is described as the treasure tower soaring in the air over the saha world, where the master of the essential teaching resides. Shakyamuni Buddha and Tahō Buddha take their place on either side of Myoho-Renge-Kyo within the treasure tower, accompanied by the four leaders of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, led by Bodhisattva Jōgyō.

The appearance of the true object of worship is described as the treasure tower soaring in the air over the saha world, where the master of the radical teachings resides. Shakyamuni Buddha and Tahō Buddha take their place on either side of Myoho-renge-kyo within the treasure tower, the four leaders of the bodhisattvas such as Jogyo attended with Shakyamuni Buddha.

All the other major and minor bodhisattvas, whether they are disciples of the Buddha in his transient status or of the Buddhas of the other worlds, are like commoners kneeling on the ground in the presence of nobles and high-ranking court officials.

The bodhisattvas of varying statures, such as those taught by the Buddha of the theoretical teaching and the bodhisattvas of other lands, gaze up at this treasure tower, just like common people prostrating themselves before persons of high station.

There are big and small Bodhisattvas of the provisional or other land on the ground where all the people are, and it looks like looking up to a noble and a court noble.

十方の諸仏は大地の上に処し給う、迹仏(しゃくぶつ)迹土(しゃくど)を表する故なり、

The Buddhas who gathered from the other worlds in the ten directions all remain on the ground, showing that they are only temporary manifestations of the eternal Buddha and that their lands are transient, not eternal and unchanging.

All the Buddhas of the ten directions remain on the ground. This is to indicate that they are provisional Buddhas, coming from provisional lands.

All the Buddhas who gathered from the worlds in the ten directions remain on the ground because they are temporary manifestations of the eternal Buddha and their acreages are transient, not eternal.

末法の本仏の立場で法華経一部二十八品を直弟子日興上人に口伝した書【御義口伝 下】要点解説(9)

【寿量品二十七箇の大事】


第九 毒気深入 失本心故の事(注)

 

 御義口伝に云く、毒気深入とは、権教(注)、謗法(注)の執情深く入りたる者なり。
之に依つて法華の大良薬を信受せざるなり。

服せしむると雖も吐き出だすは、而謂不美とて、むま(美味)からずと云う者なり。


今、日蓮等の類い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉るは、而謂不美の者に非ざるなり。



権教

権つまり仮の教え。法華経を説く以前の爾前経(にぜんきょう)を示す。

爾前経と法華経の根本的な違いは二つ在る。


一つは爾前経では有情・非情にわたり全ての存在に仏性(仏界)があると説かれてはいなかった。

釈尊は【妙法蓮華経 方便品第二】の世雄偈で、仏がこの世に出現した一大事因縁を、

仏の悟つまり仏性を開き、示し、それを衆生にも悟らせ、仏に為る道つまり仏道に入らせる事を目的(開示吾入)として出現したと解き明かした。

もう一つは、爾前経及び【妙法蓮華経 従地涌出品第十伍】迄、釈尊は、釈迦族の王子として生まれ出家し、バラモンの難行苦行をへて菩提樹に端座し瞑想して成道したとする「始成正覚」を説いていたが、【妙法蓮華経 如来寿量品第十六】で次のようにそれを打ち破り、遥か久遠に成道「久遠実成」し、無数の仏国土で衆生を化導してきたと解き明かされた。

『皆は、今の釈迦牟尼仏は釈氏の宮を出でて、伽耶城(注)を去ること遠からず、道場に座して阿耨多羅三藐三菩提(仏の悟り)を得たりと思えり。然るに善男子よ、我は実に成仏してより已来、無量無辺百千万億那由他劫なり』と。 

謗法
誹謗正法(ひぼうしょうぼう)の略で正しい法を誹謗すること。
末法においては、日蓮大聖人が御図現なされた十界曼陀羅御本尊に「南無妙法蓮華経」と唱える、仏と為るための究極の修行法、及び日興上人以降それを今日まで正しく伝えてきた法華経の行者を誹謗する事が最も重い謗法となる。

25. The Showdown by the Rain in Gokurakuji Ryoukan and Nichiren 3

Nichiren who became 50 years old began sermon in that evening. His short hair was touched with gray.

A great number of the audience waves a folding fan because it is hot, and wipes sweat.

Su'obo and Ilusawa Nyudo of Ryoukan's disciple were in here. Two people came to reconnoitre the enemy's movements. If Nichiren moved, they reported it to Ryoukan immediately.

The sermon of Nichiren adds to strictness.

“There is a Buddhist priest called Ryoukan in this Kamakura. He is in shabby clothes, and he keeps 250 religious precepts firmly, and has correct behavior. Not to mention a bonze and layman of the ignorance, he is respected from a king to all the people as saying that he is the living Buddha. But when I see the Lotus Sutra, it is preached that the three powerful enemies will appear before the person who spreads the Lotus Sutra in the latter days of the Law. I consider the most intense third enemy among them is this priest Ryoukan”.

Su'obo butted in being impatient.

“Wait. Why do you say such a silly talk without a reason?”.

Nichiren picked the fifth scroll of the Lotus Sutra slowly and opened the thirteenth chapter of the recommending and the having.

‘Preferably, please never worry.

We will right preach it widely in the world of fear and unreason soon, after Buddha passes away.

Various ignorant people will give us calumny and blame, in addition, they will use a sword and a stick and persecute us.

We very, everybody will endure it’.

'After Buddha passed away, there will be one priest.

He will pretend that he keeps religious precepts, and while he slightly read the sutra, he is absorbed with eating and drinking and will make a living.

Even though he wears a priest's robe, while facing a believer, it seems a hunter aims at a deer or seems a cat tries for a mouse.

Furthermore, this Buddhist priest will always advocate these words; "I got Buddhahood".

Though expresses intelligent and virtuous outside, inside holds greed.

Like Brahman opening mouth, he will express the form of the Buddhist priest though it is not a priest in truth, and he will spread a wicked view and will slander teachings of Buddha’.

Ilusawa Nyudo sneers.

“No matter what you say, our priest Ryoukan is the first-rate priest in Kamakura that lord Tokimune recognizes. He was ordered rainy prayer either the other day from the Shogunate. Perhaps I shouldn't say so, but even if the priest Nichiren hopes, it does not come true”.

Suobo either lightly laughed and asserted it.

“The priest Nichiren is like oil and water with us. Even if you said something, the people do not recognize you at all. We are just going to leave. We must do preparations of praying for rain from now”.

Nichiren stopped it that two people rose to their feet, at that time.

“Wait. I hear that rainy prayer will be performed from June 18. I will become disciple of priest Ryoukan if he brought rain during that seven days!”.

The audience was not able to hide a surprising voice to a remark of Nichiren of doing a confrontation of the rain.

Gosho 三大秘法稟承事 終 Receiving the Three Great Secret Law end

()年来(としごろ)己心に秘すと雖も、此の法門を書き付て留め置ずんば門家(もんけ)(ゆい)(てい)等定めて無慈悲の讒言(ざんげん)を加う可し、

 Up until now I have kept this doctrine secret within my heart. But if I do not leave behind me a written record of it, the future followers of my teachings will perhaps slander me by saying that I was without pity or compassion.

 其の後は何と()ゆとも(かな)うまじきと存ずる間、貴辺に対し書き送り候、

 And at that time, I would have no way to refute their rebuke and should regret it. Therefore, I send this to you.

 一見の後・秘して他見有る可からず、口外も(せん)無し、

 When you have finished reading it, you must keep it secret and not show it to others or discuss it with them.

 After you have read this first, you keep secret and must not show others this, telling is useless too.

 法華経を諸仏出世の一大事と説かせ給いて候は、此の三大秘法を含めたる経にて渡らせ給えばなり、秘す可し秘す可し。

 The Lotus Sutra describes itself as representing the one great reason for which the Buddhas make their appearance in the world because it is a scripture that contains these Three Great Secret Laws. Therefore you must keep this matter secret, keep it secret!

 The reason that the Lotus Sutra is preached as the sole great act of various Buddha's advent. It is because this sutra includes the Law of three great secret. Keep secret. Keep this secretly!

Gosho 三大秘法稟承事九 Receiving the Three Great Secret Law 9

 此の法門は義理を案じて義をつまびらかにせよ、

 I hope you will examine the ideas and principles underlying this doctrine that I am here expounding and will fully understand its meaning.

 此の三大秘法は二千余年の当初(そのかみ)・地涌千界の上首として日蓮(たし)かに教主大覚世尊より口決(くけつ)相承(そうじょう)せしなり、

 These Three Great Secret Laws were unquestionably received by me, Nichiren, some two thousand and more years ago, when I was the leader of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth; they were passed on to me by oral transmission from the lord of teachings, the World-Honored One of Great Enlightenment.
 These Three Great Secret Laws are the teachings that were orally transmitted to me, Nichiren, as the leader of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, more than two thousand years ago by Shakyamuni Buddha, the World-Honored One of Unsurpassed Enlightenment.

 These Three Great Secret Laws are the teachings that were orally inherited to Nichiren unquestionably as the leader of the bodhisattvas welling up from the ground more than two thousand years odd ago originally by the great master attaining Buddhahood.

(いま)日蓮が所行は(りょう)鷲山(じゅせん)禀承(ぼんしょう)()()(ばか)りの相違なき色も替らぬ寿量品の事の三大事なり。

 And these actions that I now take embody what I received in transmission on Eagle Peak, without the slightest deviation or alteration inform, the three great matters of the Law of the “Life Span” chapter.

Gosho 極楽寺良観への御状 Letter to Ryoukan of Gokuraku-ji

この(おもむき)を鎌倉殿を始め奉り、建長寺等其の(ほか)披露(ひろう)せしめ候。

I have written letters to the regent, the lord of Kamakura, and to the head priest of Kenchō-ji and of other temples informing them of my views on this matter.

所詮(しょせん)本意(ほんい)を遂げんと欲せば対決に()かず。

In effect, if my original intentions are to be realized, I think there is no better solution than for all of us to meet in public debate.

(すなわ)ち三蔵(せん)(ごん)の法を以て、諸経中王の法華に向かふは、江河と大海と華山(かざん)(みょう)(こう)との勝劣(しょうれつ)の如くならん。

In terms of relative worth and superiority, the shallow doctrines set forth in the Tripitaka teachings are, when compared to the Lotus Sutra, which is the king of all the sutras, like streams and rivers in comparison to the great ocean, or like Mount Hua in comparison to Mount Sumeru.

In other words, the comparison between the Lotus Sutra of the king in the various sutra and the Law of superficial and shallow Buddhism sutra reveals the superiority and the inferiority, for example, these are river and the ocean or are Mt. Hua Shan and Mt. Chomolungma.

蒙古国調伏(じょうぶく)の秘法は定めて()存知(ぞんち)有るべく候か。

Are you sure to know the secret Law that will overcome and subdue the Mongol nation?

Do you know the secret Law that will pray to overcome the Mongol nation emphatically?

日蓮は日本第一の法華経の行者、蒙古国対冶(たいじ)の大将たり。「()一切衆生中(やく)()第一」とは是なり、

I, Nichiren, am the foremost votary of the Lotus Sutra in all of Japan, a great general who can defeat the forces of the Mongol nation, for, as the Lotus Sutra says, “A person who can accept and uphold this sutra is likewise foremost among all living beings.”

     文永五年十月十一日 四十七歳御作

    October 11, 1268 (Age: 47)


西戎(さいじゅう)大蒙古国の到来に()いて鎌倉殿其の(ほか)へ書状を進ぜしめ候。

With regard to the official letter that has arrived from the western barbarians, the great Mongol Empire, I have respectfully submitted letters to the regent, the lord of Kamakura, and to other parties.

日蓮()ぬる文応元年の(ころ)(かんが)へ申せし立正安国論の如く(ごう)(まつ)(ばか)りも之に相違せず候。

此の事如何(いかん)

But it would seem that the Sage Ryōkan is one of the company described by the Lotus Sutra in the words “Or there will be forest-dwelling monks wearing clothing of patched rags and living in retirement”.

The place of Saint Ryoukan is described by the Lotus Sutra in the words “Or there will be monks wearing clothing of patched rags and living in forest namely aranya”.

阿練若は無事(むじ)(ほん)ず。

The word aranya, or “forest,” means a place of peace and quiet.

(いか)でか日蓮を讒奏(ざんそう)するの条、住処と相違せり。

Why then do you make your own dwelling a place from which to issue slanderous reports regarding Nichiren?

This location differs from your place making a false statement and a false charge for slandering Nichiren.

(しかしなが)ら三学に似たる矯賊(きょうぞく)の聖人なり、

You are nothing more than a sham, a traitorous “sage” who pretends to the three types of learning, the precepts, meditation, and wisdom.

You are nothing more than a saint of sham and bandit who holds the religious three practices.

僣聖増上慢(せんしょうぞうじょうまん)にして今生は国賊、来世は那落(ならく)()(ざい)せんこと必定(ひつじょう)せり。

A counterfeit sage, a person of overbearing arrogance, in your present existence you will surely be marked out as a traitor to the nation, and in your next existence will fall into the region of hell.

You are an arrogant counterfeit saint, in present existence you are a bandit of the nation, and in next existence you will fall into the hell unquestionably!

(いささ)かも先非(せんぴ)()いなば日蓮に帰すべし。

But if you feel any remorse whatsoever for your past evil deeds, you will come and put your faith in Nichiren.

If you feel even a little remorse for your past sin, come and put your faiths in Nichiren.

()れ昔像法(ぞうほう)の末には()(みょう)(しゅ)(えん)等・奏状(そうじょう)をささげて伝教大師を(ざん)(そう)す、

In the past, when the Middle Day of the Law was coming to an end, Gomyō, Shuen, and other priests presented petitions to the throne in which they slandered the Great Teacher Dengyō.

At the end of the middle days of the Law, Gomyo, Shuen and the other dedicated petitions in which slandered the Great Teacher Dengyou to emperor.

今末法の(はじめ)には良観・念阿(ねんあ)偽書(ぎしょ)を注して将軍家にささぐ・

Now, at the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law, Ryōkan, Nen’a, and others drew up false documents and presented them to the shogunate.

At the beginning of the latter days of the Law, Ryoukan, Nen'a and others make up false document and are dedicating it to the shogunate just now.

あに三類の怨敵(おんてき)にあらずや。

 Are they not to be counted among the third group of enemies of the Lotus Sutra?

Why are they not the enemies of three kinds who hold a grudge?
