末法の本仏の立場で法華経一部二十八品を直弟子日興上人に口伝した書【御義口伝 上】要点解説(104)

【勧持品十三箇の大事】

第十 自作此経典の事

御義口伝に云く、(日蓮は)法華経を所作して(自分に都合にいいように)読むと謗す可し、と云う経文なり云云。


第十一 為斯所軽言 汝等皆是仏の事


御義口伝に云く、法華経の行者を蔑(あな)づり、生仏と云うべしと云う経文なり。是は軽心を以て謗るなり。
今、日蓮等の類い、南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る者を云う可きなり。


上記第十、第十一は、日蓮大聖人は、末法の法華経の行者を「僣聖増上慢」の僧がどのように謗るかを解き明かしておられます。


 現代でも妙法蓮華経二十八品を熟読し心肝に染めることなく、法華経は釈尊滅後に創作された「偽書」で、仏説ではないと主張する仏教学者が存在する。

しかし大乗仏教中観派の祖「龍樹(150 – 250 年頃)」、天親(300-400年頃)、天台(538年 - 597年)、伝教(767-822)等の、法華経を釈尊の極説と讃嘆した偉人達は、微塵も法華経が仏説であることを疑っていない。それは法華経一部二十八品を精読すれば、釈尊以外には解き明かすことができない内容が説かれている事が、容易にわかることである。

また上記と同様に、日蓮大聖人の法門の全てを血脈相承された第二祖日興上人が、後世の弟子信徒のために書き残された「二十六箇条の遺誡置文」には、

「一、御書何れも偽書に擬し当門流を毀謗せん者之有る可し、若し加様の悪侶出来せば親近す可からざる事」と門下の遺弟等を戒められておられます。

19. Nichiren Decides Warning to the Nation

The rumor of the Mongolia attack spread in such serious political situation even between the common people.

Nobody of Japan other than Nichiren predicted this. Nichiren foretold the attack of other countries in 'the treatise of establishing the correct teachings for the safety of the nation' nine years ago. The people slandered him in defiance of ominous warning of Nichiren, but suddenly waked out of sleep by the personal letter arrival of Mongolia.

Nichiren read all the Buddhist sutras and foretold the future from the text of a sutra.

Two difficulties not to yet bring about happen if one kept wicked doctrine intact. It is the disaster of the internal revolt and the disaster of foreign invasion.

Korai country was destroyed in those days because Korai which ruled the Korean Peninsula believed in Nembutsu in the whole country. The correct and wicked in the Buddha's Law, which make the master of a state of flux in the universe, decide the destinies of the nation, it does not depend on good and evil of the politics.

At first the prediction appeared as the form of the foreign invasion. If Law of Buddha is right, the attack of Mongolia becomes the reality. It was certain that the revolt in another disaster to be left if it was so was caused.

Nichiren knew this document three months after the personal letter reached Kamakura. Nichiren had become that year 47 years old. He offered Tokiyori Hojo 'the treatise for establishing of the correct teachings for the safety of the nation' at 39 years old on the Bunno era first year of 1260, then this time the personal letter from Mongolia which told the hit of prediction to Tokimune of Tokiyori's son arrived after nine calendar year.

Nichiren has ineffable emotions.

December 8 of the sixth year of Bunnei era [in 1269], he adds the postscript to the treatise that he copied as his thought of this time.


"I thought of this in the first year of the Bunno era (1260). That is, I began the work during the Shoka era (1257–1259) and completed it in the first year of Bunno. In the first year of the Shoka era, on the twenty-third day of August, when the hour of the dog gives way to the hour of the boar (around 9:00 p.m.), there was a severe earthquake. Observing this, I conceived this work. Subsequently, on the sixteenth day of July in the first year of Bunno, I submitted it to Lordship, the lay priest of Saimyō-ji who is now deceased Tokiyori, by entrusting the lay priest Yadoya. Then, when the huge comet appeared on the fifth day of July, the first year of Bun'ei [1264], I became even more convinced that there was a root cause for all these disasters. Then, on the eighteenth day of the intercalary January of the fifth year of Bun'ei namely nine years after the first year of Bun'no, the personal letter came from the great empire of the Mongol of west, threatening to attack our country. Then, still another official letter arrived in the sixth year of the same era [1269]. These cases unfolded as warned in my treatise exactly. In light of this fact, I believe the same will happen in the future as well. This writing has the power that get an indication. But this is not solely due to Nichiren's power. Rather it might come about as an inspiration from the true words of the Lotus Sutra”.


Nichiren's thought appears in "the same will happen in the future as well". If a future Japanese king believed a wicked doctrine, he predicts that the national crisis is not avoided.

Japan which placed Yasukuni shrine up than the Buddhism much less the Lotus Sutra and worshiped it was taken up by the foreign country for the first time in history in the Pacific War. In the current administration which still worships Yasukuni shrine, Japanese territorial waters continue being threatened by China or North Korea.

After having remained silent for a while, Tokimune glared, and exploded in anger.

“Did you flinch? This personal letter is extremely rude. If our Japan became the dependency of Mongolia, what happens to us? Where is our peace and security while yielding to threats? Ignore it absolutely. Otherwise we only fight!”.

The contents of the personal letter are the same as what flung the written challenge against Tokimune that is a king. It is natural that he flies into a rage.

Yasumori shrank at spirit of Tokimune.

Yoritsuna smiles fearlessly as if is time when he finally plays his role.

Mitsunori could not but think in this way. ‘It is certain that the prediction of priest Nichiren will prove right in this’.

Since the regent made up his mind, Yasumori Adachi thought that it was unavoidable, and he directed subordinates unwillingly.

“At first send a commander to Kyushu. Let the Shinto shrine and Buddhist temple say grace for Mongolia extermination”.

Yoritsuna transmitted to subordinates immediately shrewdly, too.

“Must unify intention of Japan. The person who is against a policy of the Shogunate deals with a severe punishment. Hojo commands the whole country as a ruler of Japan now”.

Lay priest Yadoya gave instructions to other vassal people and followers, too.

“Treat the messenger politely. Let the observer force sneak into Korai. Report the status of Mongolia minutely”.

By the way, although the Shogunate asked the Imperial Court of Kyoto about this matter on February 7 of the next month, the Emperor does not have the capacity to do something. All was entrusted to the Kamakura Shogunate which was led by Tokimune.

That was ironical.

Hojo clan planned elimination of other clans and destroyed Miura and Wada of the influential family, and the enemy disappeared in the country. For building the autocracy, the young man Tokimune appeared long-awaited, but Mongolia had stood in the way there. If it is a samurai, anyone knows the terrible force of the Mongolia. It will be clear in future that a discussion happens over the correspondence with Mongolia.

The Imperial Court has kept very quiet since the fight of Zhokyu, but they will criticize the Shogunate beneath the surface of the water. The person who does not remain silent in the Shogunate either appears. The most dangerous is Tokisuke Hojo who is half older brother of Tokimune, and vassals who supports him. In particular, the Nagoe clan of the branch family in Hojo, had power among them.


Military Headquarters were crowded with military horses of toward Kyushu.

The vassals and followers make a line orderly and leave the gate.

The military commanders put hands together in the Hachiman Shrine and prayed. The soldiers either put hands together all.

Their clan prayed tearfully, too.

April, the Shogunate gave the Shrines and temples of the whole country an order for a prayer of the Mongolia defeat. The Imperial Court either prays for foreign country surrender on July 17. Japan held the actual feeling that there is a crisis in this way all together.

Though it is different at the times, this uneasiness that occurred unexpectedly declared war against the large United States 700 years later and might be the same as the people's mind that entered to the Pacific War.

The government official of the Japanese side was astonished. It is being written, ‘Nobody would wish to use arms’. This is clear intimidation.

Mongolia thought that they ruled the world by power of heaven's god. They say to Japan that they should serve Mongolia according to the prescript of heaven.

The situation of the Eurasian Continent was known in those days in Japan. It was well-known in Japan that the descendant who began with Genghis Kahn had entirely dominated over a continent and built the large empire and neighboring Korai fought most energetically but lost and became the dependency. They either knew that emperor Kublai invaded China and defeated Soong empire and was cornering the Han race to the south.

In Kamakura, a ship of south Soong comes and goes. The transmission of the information is early.

Knew the strength of the Mongolia soldier too. The Japanese expected that the disaster of Mongolia extended to Japan by all means at first. Although Japan sandwich the sea, it is just a stone's throw from the continent. They could not help feeling the danger of the life. There were jitters in the base.

However, the emergence of Mongolia was someone else's problem after all.

Although the human beings keep tension at the beginning not to forget it when uneasiness increases, they come to evade it from the cause of the uneasiness over time. Feeling of strain is paralyzed unconsciously. At first, they said 'Mongolia might come' but the people's opinion had turned into' Mongolia would not come'.

For example, at the time of World War II, the United States decoded the code of the Japanese military authorities and guessed that Japan decided war with the United States. However, they did not even expect that Japan attacked far Hawaii on the sea.

In addition, in the present too, the United States expected sufficiently that Taliban caused terrorism inside the country. Therefore, the United States worked out necessary measures, but, they did not have even imagination that Taliban hijacked a commercial airplane to crash into the twin towers or the Pentagon of New York.

Nichiren alone foretold the foreign invasion in ‘the Treatise of Establishing the Correct Teachings for the Safety of the Nation'. But nobody believed. Far from not believing, the Kamakura Shogunate sentenced him to banishment to Izu.

The personal letter came there.

This news was a thunderclap to them. The uneasiness that a coming thing came to the country spread at a stretch.


Night Kamakura was fast asleep, but a torch did not disappear only at the place of Shogunate military headquarters even in the middle of the night. The sentry continues standing without moving an inch.

The wick of some put lamp shades was bright and burnt in the room of the regent of the hall. Central figures of the Shogunate gather. They are the regent Tokimune, Yasumori Adachi of the member of the supreme council system of policy decision within the Shogunate, Yoritsuna Tairano of the butler, Yadoya of the lay priest and others.

The letter of Kublai is put before Tokimune. The letter of Mongolia arrived at Kamakura on January 18, 1268.

“An indescribable letter came. I want to listen to all friend's opinion. Speak frankly”.

After having spoken it in this way in the beginning of the meeting, Tokimune closes eyes and crosses an arm and meditates.

Yasumori Adachi begins to talk.

“It is really a bolt from the blue. Trade with our Japan, and they say that otherwise they attack us. It is a serious situation. I think we should trade according to the request of Mongolia. We are not ready for the self-defense now”.

Yoritsuna Tairano was always arrogant, but he said carefully because this is called the situation of the national crisis.

“The enemy is Mongolia. I hear that they are the horse army corps which is beginning from Genghis Kahn. They are approximately equal with us in the inland even if we can suppress them in the seashore. It is a foregone conclusion that a country of Japan encounters harm of the war. Neighboring Korai lost by the fight of twenty years and left. As for them, the Crown Prince was held hostage as a symbol of the surrender, and it is said that the country has been filled with cranial bone”.

Yadoya Mitsunori of the aide followed. He is the person who passed on the treatise of Nichiren to father Tokiyori of Tokimune nine years ago. When Tokiyori was sick in bed, he was one of important people in Shogunate waiting near.

“This personal letter seems to be mere greetings. The messenger coming to Dazaifu seems to be friendly. We should hold Mongolia and diplomatic relations, and it is necessary to bring the profit of the trade to the Shogunate”.

Three people watched Tokimune.

第九 或有阿練若の事

御義口伝に云く、第三の比丘(注)なり、良観(注)等なり。

六通羅漢(注)の人と思うなり。

第三の比丘
三類の強敵の中の第三、僣聖増上慢の悪僧を指していて、日蓮大聖人は、極楽寺良観がそれにあたるとしている。

これらの僧を当時の民衆は、六神通を得た阿羅漢のように崇めていたと伝えられている。

良観

極楽寺良観は雨が降らず鎌倉が飢饉に陥った時、幕府より「降雨」の祈りをするよう依頼される。

 その時日蓮大聖人は良観に「七日以内に一粒でも雨が降れば、日蓮は法華経捨てて念仏を唱える。若し降らなければその時は良観上人は日蓮に帰依せよ」と対決を迫り、良観はその提案を受けいれる。

ところが21日経過しても全く雨は降らず、良観は日蓮に帰依するどころか逃亡し身を隠してしまう。

 その後日蓮大聖人は降雨の祈祷行い、たちどころに雨を降らせる。

このことに恨みを抱いた良観は、北条時宗の母(北条時頼の正室)である葛西殿、鎌倉幕府侍所の重鎮・平頼綱に働きかけ、日蓮大聖人を龍の口の処刑場で断首する龍の口の法難を引き起こすことになる。

これは典型的な「僣聖増上慢」の悪僧の姿そのものであった。

【勧持品十三箇の大事】


第八 悪世中比丘の事 (注)

御義口伝に云く、悪世中比丘の悪世とは末法なり。

 比丘とは、謗法たる弘法(注)等、是なり。

法華の正智を捨て権教の邪智を本とせり。


今、日蓮等の類い、南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る者は、正智の中の大正智なり。

悪世中比丘

末法の法華経の行者を迫害する三類の強敵「俗衆増上慢・道門増上慢・僭聖増上慢」の中の道門増上慢を意味する。

勧持品では「悪世の中の比丘は、邪智にして心諂曲に、末だ得ざるを為れ得たると謂い、我慢の心充満せん」と解き明かしている。


弘法

弘法大師(空海)。中国より真言密教をもたらした、日本の真言宗の開祖。


日蓮大聖人は立宗当初は、法然の念仏を人々を自殺に誘導する教えとして「念仏無間」と厳しく批判したが、佐渡流罪以降の後半生では、真言は亡国の教えであるとして、弘法大師が立宗した真言宗を徹底的に破折した。


日蓮大聖人は佐渡流罪中に「真言七重難」とする真言破折の書【真言見聞】を著されておられる。


[真言七重難]

 真言は法華経より外に大日如来の所説なり云云、若し爾れば大日の出世成道・説法利生は釈尊より前か後か如何、対機説法の仏は八相作仏す、父母は誰れぞ、名字は如何に、娑婆世界の仏と云はば世に二仏無く国に二主無きは聖教の通判なり、涅槃経の三十五の巻を見る可きなり、若し他土の仏なりと云はば何ぞ我が主師親の釈尊を蔑(ないがしろ)にして他方・疎縁の仏を崇むるや、不忠なり不孝なり逆路伽耶陀(ぎゃくろがやだ)なり、若し一体と云はば何ぞ別仏と云うや、若し別仏ならば何ぞ我が重恩の仏を捨つるや、唐尭(とうぎょう)は老い衰へたる母を敬ひ、虞舜(ぐしゅん)は頑(かたくな)なる父を崇む 是一


 六波羅蜜経に云く「所謂過去無量恒伽沙の諸仏世尊の所説の正法・我今亦当に是の如き説を作すべし所謂八万四千の諸の妙法蘊(おん)なり○而も阿難陀等の諸大弟子をして一たび耳に聞いて皆悉く憶持せしむ」云云、此の中の陀羅尼蔵を弘法我が真言と云える若し爾れば此の陀羅尼蔵は釈迦の説に非ざるか此の説に違す 是二


 凡そ法華経は無量千万億の已説・今説・当説に最も第一なり、諸仏の所説・菩薩の所説・声聞の所説に此の経第一なり諸仏の中に大日漏る可きや。法華経は正直無上道の説・大日等の諸仏長舌を梵天に付けて真実と示し給う。 是三


 威儀形色経に「身相黄金色にして常に満月輪に遊び定慧智拳の印法華経を証誠す」と、又五仏章の仏も法華経第一と見えたり 是四


「要を以て之を云わば如来の一切所有の法乃至皆此の経に於て宣示顕説す」云云、此等の経文は釈迦所説の諸経の中に第一なるのみに非ず三世の諸仏の所説の中に第一なり、此の外・一仏二仏の所説の経の中に法華経に勝れたる経有りと云はば用ゆ可からず、法華経は三世不壊の経なる故なり 是五


又大日経等の諸経の中に法華経に勝るる経文之無し 是六


 釈尊御入滅より已後天竺の論師二十四人の付法蔵・其の外大権の垂迹・震旦の人師・南三北七の十師・三論法相の先師の中に天台宗より外に十界互具・百界千如・一念三千と談ずる人之無し、若し一念三千を立てざれば性悪の義之無し、性悪の義無くば仏菩薩の普現色身・真言両界の漫荼羅・五百七百の諸尊は本無今有の外道の法に同ぜんか、若し十界互具・百界千如を立てば本経何れの経にか十界皆成の旨之を説けるや、天台円宗見聞の後・邪智荘厳の為に盗み取れる法門なり、才芸を誦し浮言を吐くには依る可からず正しき経文・金言を尋ぬ可きなり 是七

'The Personal Letter of Mongolia', the manuscript copy by Shosyu. Included in "the Book to Pray for Eliminating the Enemies Interfering with the Country". It is placed in the Sonsyoin of the Todaiji Temple.


On the other hand, the great incident had happened in far west Kyushu Hakata gulf of Kamakura for New Year holidays of the same year.

A big boat of Mongolia visited the Japanese shore from Mainland China.

A military commander of dignified Mongolia being accompanied with the government official of Korai [Goryeo, dynasty of Korea] was riding in a boat.

The Gulf of Hakata was near to the Korean Peninsula, and there was the trade with south Soong, too, and a large number of merchant ships came and went. Korai and Chinese ships mixed, and an especially big Mongolia ship arrived at the lively gulf. The people farmer gathered, watched the members who got off the ship and each whispered.

The messenger of Mongolia landed and went to Dazaifu.

Mongolians go to the building of extensive Dazaifu.

They sat down on the chair which was provided on the floor, met the Japanese government official.

A person from Mongolia gave a speech slowly.

“We came as a messenger of the Emperor Kublai of the great Mongolia country. Notify to the king of Japanese”.

He read the personal letter aloud.

Cherished by the god of heaven, the Great Mongol emperor sends this letter to the Japanese king. The sovereigns of small countries, sharing borders with each other, have for a long time been concerned to communicate with each other and become friendly. Especially since my ancestor had governed by heaven's order, innumerable countries from afar have been afraid of our dignity and respected our virtue. When I just succeeded to the throne, because people of Korai were tired from war, I stopped war and made peace and let an old man and child return to the hometown. Korai came to thank me, did ceremonies of paying tribute to us. Although this relation is the lord and vassal, we are on familiar terms like father and son to be pleased together. We think that the chief vassal of your country and its vassals already know this, too. Korai is the tributary country of east. Japan often sent the envoy to China since the founding of a country close against Korai. However, since my ascending the throne, you had never dispatched it and has not had a close relationship each other. We are afraid that the kingdom is yet to know this. Hence, I send the envoy with my letter particularly expressing my wishes. Enter into friendly relations with each other and we ought to be on good terms from now on. And the saint assumes the world a house. We think all countries belong to one family. What do not come into intimate relations cannot be one family. Nobody would wish to use arms. To Japanese king, understand it well”.

August, 1266.

第七 有諸無智人の事 (注)

御義口伝に云く、一文不通の大俗なり、悪口罵詈等分明なり。

日本国の俗を諸と云うなり。

有諸無智人

この偈は妙法蓮華経 勧持品の下記の偈に説かれている。

[原文]

唯願不為慮 於仏滅度後 恐怖悪世中 我等当広説

有諸無智人 悪口罵詈等 及加刀杖者 我等皆当忍

悪世中比丘 邪智心諂曲 未得謂為得 我慢心充満

或有阿練若 納衣在空閑 自謂行真道 軽賎人間者

[和訳]

唯、願くば慮(うらおもい)を為さざれ。仏滅度の後に於いて、恐怖の悪世の中で、我等当に広く説くべし。

諸の無智の人、法華経を説く人に悪口、罵詈等、及び刀杖を加える事有とも、我等は皆、当に忍ぶべし。
悪世の中の比丘は、邪智にして心、諂曲にして、未だ得ざるともこれを得たりと謂い、我慢の心充満せり。

或は阿練若(注)に有りて、納衣にて空閑に在りて、自から真の道を行ぜりと謂い、人間を軽賎せし者あるらん。

人里離れた静かな場所


上記の文文は、末法に法華経を弘教する法華経の行者を迫害する「俗衆増上慢・道門増上慢・僭聖増上慢」の三類の強敵を示している。

諸の無智の人は俗衆増上慢。

悪世の中の比丘は道門増上慢。
自から真の道を行ぜりと謂い人間を軽賎せし者は、僭聖増上慢をそれぞれ意味している。


日蓮大聖人は、松葉ヶ谷の法難、伊豆流罪、小松原の法難、龍の口の法難、佐渡流罪の5つの法難で、勧持品に予言されている三類の強敵からの迫害を全て受け、末法の本仏としての振る舞いを示した。

この事について日蓮大聖人は佐渡で書かれた【開目抄】

『而るに法華経の第五の巻(※)、勧持品の二十行の偈は日蓮だにも此の国に生れずば、ほとをど世尊は大妄語の人、八十万億那由佗の菩薩は提婆が虚誑罪にも堕ちぬべし』と断じておられます。

Very Tokisuke stood up then.

“Why do I go to Kyoto and should flatter the court noble? I should be the boss of Kamakura. Why do I of the elder brother not become the regent?”.

Yasumori appeases him with an embarrassing face.

“Lord Tokisuke, this is a will of Lord Tokiyori of the fifth regent like as I had told you many times”.

The excitement of Tokisuke does not cool down.

“Hang it! I do not want to hear any more from you!”.

Tokisuke went away through the center of the samurai group who make a fuss. It was a attitude to refuse against in the regent assumption of office of Tokimune openly.

The hall rustled. It is the unexpected development. There was the vassal who had a smile about the unexpected rip of Hojo who seemed to be a monolith.

Yoritsuna Tairano cleared his throat next, appeared standing in front of the samurai group.

“I am Yoritsuna Tairano serving as the butler of lord Tokimune, and the person calls me Heino-Sa'emonnojo.

One of the vassal mutters.

“Pshaw! Watchdog of Hojo”.

“The butler is the person who manages housework of the lord Tokimune and guards him with the body as a shield in some cases. I do not think that there is the person who does not feel today's bright stage pleasant, but, I am all right even if there was. If there was such a person who would defy us, this Yoritsuna will leave no stone unturned for scratching and cutting his neck”.

Yoritsuna looks around.

“Are you ready?”.

Mitsutoki Nago'e shouted without being able to endure here.

“Saemonnojo, know a place! You are going too far. You should keep your place with the position of vulgar butler!”.

Mitsutoki Nago'e is the person of the principal branch family of Hojo. For a family, he would be ignored if he did not say something here.

All have begun to rustle. However, a din subsided all at once when Tokimune raised a folding fan overhead quickly. Can hardly think of his superior dignity still 18 years old. Tokimune showed as a gift from father that he had grown up looking at father Tokiyori, by behavior, at the fine stage of the regent assumption of office.

Tokimune circulates the manifesto. His tone does not exclaim in vain, but it deserves to be a boss and am powerful.

“We samurais were born from chaos of the world. A court noble had performed taking a liberty on politics and overlooked the pains of people. Therefore, we samurai ruled the world. Since lord Yoritomo Minamoto, this spirit is not changed. Hojo took charge of a governmental affair of this Japan by chance, and I will guarantee the social position of you, samurai, too. For these twenty years, the small conflict does not die out although here not being the war, and being peaceful. Many samurais, a little land. If there is little water, the fish makes noise,and a bird rustles if a tree is low. You will be not each satisfied. But the world of an government based on military power continues to exist. The samurai in succession to the spirit of Yoritomo. Be proud of yourself! If there is people resisting this Shogunate, on behalf of the great Bodhisattva Hachiman, we will beat them!”.

A samurai group sets up a courageous shout, and answers to the manifesto of Tokimune. The common soldiers pushed out the Japanese halberd they had, into the sky.

A battle cry echoed through Kamakura a lot of times.

末法の本仏の立場で法華経一部二十八品を直弟子日興上人に口伝した書【御義口伝 上】要点解説(100)

【勧持品十三箇の大事】

第六 如法修行の事


御義口伝に云く、如法修行の人とは天台、妙楽、伝教等(注)なり。

今、日蓮等の類い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉るは、如法修行なり云云。



法華経勧持品では「此の経を書写・受持・読誦し、其の義を解説し、法の如く修行し、正しく憶念せしめん」と説かれているが、日蓮大聖人は末法の修行は、法華経二十八品を一幅の曼荼羅に図現した十界曼荼羅のご本尊に向かいて「南無妙法蓮華経」を唱えることが仏になる唯一の行であると解き明かした。

天台、妙楽、伝教

天台大師は中国隋の時代の僧。天台宗の実質的開祖

妙法蓮華経の釈である『法華文句・法華玄義・摩訶止観』説き、一瞬の生命に地獄界から仏界まで十界が備わり、その十界は互いに具しているとする十界互具論を展開した。

妙楽大師は天台宗の第六祖、天台大師の「法華三部作」の解釈本「止観輔行伝弘決、法華玄義釈籤、法華文句記」を書き、十界互具論を発展させ「一念三千論」を体系化した。

伝教大師(最長)は日本の天台宗の開祖。没後7日目に嵯峨天皇より大乗戒壇設立が許可される。
