Gosho 秀句十勝抄 Ten Superior Doctrines Described in the Outstanding Principles of the Lotus Sutra

(さん)ずる者は福を安明(あんみょう)に積み、(ぼう)ずる者は罪を無間(むけん)に開かん。

Those who praise the Lotus Sutra accumulate good fortune as high as Mount Sumeru, while the offense that one commits by slandering the Lotus Sutra opens the path to the hell of incessant suffering.

(しか)りと(いえど)も信ずる者に(おい)ては(てん)()()り、謗ずる者に於ては(どっ)()と為る。

Even so, for those who take faith in the Lotus Sutra, the sutra becomes a heavenly drum, and for those who slander it, the sutra become a poison drum.

信謗(しんぼう)彼此(ひし)決定(けつじょう)して成仏せん。

Both the believers and slanderers of the Lotus Sutra will attain Buddhahood without fail.

Those who take faith [in the Lotus Sutra] will attain enlightenment;

(ぼう)ずる者は無間大城に()

Those who slander it fall into the great citadel of the hell of incessant suffering.

Those who slander it fall into the hell of incessant suffering.

The Properties of Rice

        弘安元年六月 五十七歳御作

     June 1278 (Age: 57)


其の国の仏法は()(へん)まか()せたてまつり候ぞ。

I entrust you with the propagation of Buddhism in your province.

I entrust you with the responsibility of propagating true Buddhism in your province.

仏種は(えん)()つて起る、是の故に一乗を説くなるべし。

It is stated that “the seeds of Buddhahood sprout as a result of conditions, and for this reason they preach the single vehicle.”

The seeds of Buddhahood can sprout in response to a particular karmic relation. Thus, you must expound the teaching of one vehicle of Buddhahood.

(しか)れば日蓮(いやしき)身なれども教主釈尊の勅宣(ちょくせん)頂戴(ちょうだい)して此の国に(きた)れり、

And I, Nichiren, humble person though I am, have received Shakyamuni Buddha’s royal command and come to this country of Japan.

Thus, although I, am humble, I have received Shakyamuni Buddha’s command and have come to this country of Japan.

此れを一言もそし()らん人人は罪を無間(むけん)に開き、一字一句も供養(くよう)せん人は無数の仏を供養するにも・すぎたりと見えたり。

Thus it is apparent from the sutra that anyone who speaks a word of slander against me will be committing a crime that will condemn him to the hell of incessant suffering, and anyone who offers so much as a word or a phrase on my behalf will acquire greater blessings than if he had made offerings to countless Buddhas.

Thus, it is clear that one who utters even a single slanderous word [against the envoy of the Tathagata] is committing the cause to fall into the hell of incessant suffering, while one who reveres even a character or phrase [expounded by him] is creating a cause greater than making offerings to innumerable Buddhas.

           文永九年 五十一歳御作

            1272 (Age:51)


法華経に云く「()し善男子善女人我が滅度(めつど)の後に()(ひそ)かに一人の(ため)にも法華経の乃至(ないし)一句を説かん、(まさ)に知るべし是の人は(すなわ)ち如来の使(つかい)

The Lotus Sutra states: “If one of these good men or good women in the time after I have passed into extinction is able to secretly expound the Lotus Sutra to one person, even one phrase of it, then you should know that he or she is the envoy of the Thus Come One.”

The Lotus Sutra states:

If, after my passing, there are good men and good women, and one among them secretly preaches the entire Lotus Sutra or a phrase of it even one other person, then you should know that this individual, indeed, is an envoy of the Tathagata.

如来の所遣(しょけん)として如来の()を行ずるなり」等云云、

He has been dispatched by the Thus Come One and carries out the Thus Come One’s work.”

As the Tathagata’s envoy, he carries out compassionate action in his stead.

法華経を一字一句も唱え又人にも語り申さんものは教主釈尊の御使なり、

One who recites even one word or phrase of the Lotus Sutra and who speaks about it to another person is the emissary of Shakyamuni Buddha, lord of the teachings.

A person who recites a character or a phrase of the Lotus Sutra and also preaches it to others is an envoy of Lord Shakyamuni.

Gosho 十字御書 New Year's Gosho

今日本国の法華経をか()きとしてわざ()わいを千里の外よりまね()きよせぬ。此れをもつてをもうに、今又法華経を信ずる人はさい()わいを万里の外よりあつむべし。

Now Japan, in becoming an enemy of the Lotus Sutra, has invited misfortune from a thousand miles away. In light of this, it is clear that those who now believe in the Lotus Sutra will gather fortune from ten thousand miles away.

The country of Japan is now an enemy of the Lotus Sutra and inviting disasters from a thousand miles away, whereas people who take faith in the Lotus Sutra are attracting happiness from ten thousand miles away.

影は体より生ずるもの、法華経をかたきとする人の国は、体にかげ()()うがごとくわざわい来るべし。

The shadow is cast by the form, and just as the shadow follows the form, misfortune will befall the country whose people are hostile to the Lotus Sutra.

A body casts a shadow. Just as this shadow accompanies its body, disasters come to a country where people are enemies of the Lotus Sutra.

法華経を信ずる人はせん()だん()かを()ばしさのそなえたるがごとし。

The believers in the Lotus Sutra, on the other hand, are like the sandalwood with its fragrance.

On the contrary, people who take faith in the Lotus Sutra are like sandalwood emitting its fragrance.

又又申し候べし。

I will write you again.

On Great Evil and Great Good

      文永十二年 五十四歳御作

      1275 (Age: 54)

大事には小瑞(しょうずい)なし、

Great events never have minor omens.

大悪()これば大善きたる。

When great evil occurs, great good follows.

When great evil occurs, great good will follow.

すでに大謗法(ほうぼう)・国にあり大正法必ずひろまるべし。

Since great slander already exists in our land, the great correct Law will spread without fail.

各各(おのおの)なにをかなげ()かせ給うべき、

What could any of you have to lament?

()(しょう)尊者(そんじゃ)にあらずとも・まい()をも・まいぬべし、

Even if you are not the Venerable Mahākāshyapa, you should all perform a dance.

舎利(しゃり)(ほつ)にあらねども・立つてをど()りぬべし。

Even if you are not Shāriputra, you should leap up and dance.

上行(じょうぎょう)菩薩(ぼさつ)の大地よりいで給いしには・()どりてこそ()で給いしか。

When Bodhisattva Superior Practices emerged from the earth, did he not emerge dancing?

普賢(ふげん)菩薩の(きた)るには大地を六種にうご()かせり。

Universal Worthy arrived, the ground shook in six different ways.

事多しといへども・しげ()きゆへにとどむ、又又申すべし。

There is much to say, but as I am pressed for time, I will close. I will write again on another occasion.

The Four stages of Faith and the Five stages of Practice


    建治三年四月初旬 五十六歳御作

   Early April 1277Age; 56


問う、末法に入つて初心の行者必ず円の三学を()するや(いな)や、

Question: In the Latter Day of the Law, is it necessary for beginners in the practice of the Lotus Sutra to devote themselves to all three types of learning associated with the perfect teaching?

Question: In the latter Day of the Law, do practitioners at the initial stage [of first hearing the name of the Law] carry out the three types of learning of the perfect teaching, without fail?

答えて曰く、此の義大事たる故に経文を(かんが)(いだ)して貴辺に送付す、

Answer: This is a very important question, and so I will be consulting the text of the sutra in answering you.

Answer: Your question has important implications. Thus, I searched the relevant sutras and am sending this letter to you.

所謂(いわゆる)(ほん)(はじめ)二三品には仏(まさ)しく(かい)(じょう)の二法を制止して一向に()の一分に限る

In describing the first, second, and third of the five stages of practice, the Buddha restricts those at these stages from practicing precepts and meditation, and places all emphasis upon the single factor of wisdom.

In the so-called first, second, and third of the five stages, the Buddha, indeed, focused only on wisdom [out of the three types of leaning] by prohibiting the other two, namely, precepts and meditation.

慧又(たえ)ざれば信を以て慧に代え・信の一字を(せん)と為す、

And because our wisdom is inadequate, he teaches us to substitute faith for wisdom, making this single word “faith” the foundation.

And since one’s wisdom is lacking, he must substitute faith for wisdom. Thus, the single character faith is the heart of all Buddhist practices.

不信は一闡提(いっせんだい)謗法(ほうぼう)の因・信は慧の因・(みょう)()(そく)の位なり

Disbelief is the cause for becoming an icchantika and for slander of the Law, while faith is the cause for wisdom and corresponds to the stage of hearing the name and words of the truth.

Not believing is a cause for slander and becoming an icchantika, while faith is the cause of wisdom. [One who carries out practices in other to substitute faith for wisdom] is at the stage of first hearing the name of the Law.

Gosho 四条金吾殿御返事(此経難持御書) The Difficulty of Sustaining Faith

三世の諸仏の大事たる南無妙法蓮華経を念ずるを(たもつ)とは云うなり。

To “continue” means to cherish Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the most important principle for all the Buddhas of the three existences.

To uphold this [Lotus] Sutra means indelibly etch into one’s heart Nam-Myoho-Rnge-Kyo, which is the most precious to all the Buddhas of the three existences.

経に(いわ)く「護持(ごじ)(ぶつ)所属(しょぞく)」といへり。

The sutra reads, “We will protect and uphold what the Buddha has entrusted to us.”

The sutra states, “We will uphold the Law that the Buddha possesses.”

天台大師の云く「信力の故に受け念力の故に(たも)つ」云云。

The Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai stated, “One accepts because of one’s power of faith and continues because of one’s power of constant thought.”

The Great Teacher Tiantai stated, “One accepts the sutra based on the power of faith and upholds it with the power of prayer.”

又云く「此の経は持ち(がた)し、()(しばら)くも持つ者は我(すなわ)ち歓喜す、諸仏も(また)(しか)なり」云云。

Another part of the sutra reads, “This sutra is hard to uphold; if one can uphold it even for a short while I will surely rejoice and so will the other Buddhas.”

The sutra states, “This sutra is hard to uphold. Thus, if there is someone who upholds it even a short time, I will surely rejoice and so will all the other Buddhas.”

Establishing the Four Leaders of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth as the Object of Worship


      弘安二年五月十七日 五十八歳御作

     May 17, 1279Age: 58


総じて日蓮が弟子と()つて法華経を修行せん人人は日蓮が(ごと)くにし候へ

Those who call themselves my disciples and practice the Lotus Sutra should all practice as I do.

Those who claim to be the disciples of Nichiren and practice the Lotus Sutra must do as I do.

さだにも候はば釈迦・多宝・十方(じっぽう)の分身・十羅刹(らせつ)も御守り候べし

If they do, Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, Shakyamuni’s emanations throughout the ten directions, and the ten demon daughters will protect them.

Then Shakyamuni Buddha, Tahō Buddha, all the Buddhas in the ten directions who are innumerable emanations of Shakyamuni Buddha, and The Ten Demon Goddess Daughters definitely will protect them.
