Gosho 異体同心事 Many in Body, One in Mind


 異体同心なれば万事を(じょう)し、同体異心なれば諸事叶う事なしと申す事は外典三千余巻に(さだま)りて候、

 If the spirit of many in body but one in mind prevails among the people, they will achieve all their goals, where as if one in body but different in mind, they can achieve nothing remarkable. The more than three thousand volumes of Confucian andTaoist literature are filled with examples.
 When Hōki-bō, Sado-bō and others, as well as the Atsuwara believers are united with the spirit of many in body, one in mind, they will achieve everything, whereas, in the case of one in body, many in mind, they will not accomplish anything. This has been proven in more than 3,000 volumes of Chinese non-Buddhist literature.

(いん)(ちゅう)王は七十万騎なれども同体異心なればい()さに()けぬ、周の()(おう)は八百人なれども異体同心なれば()ちぬ、

 King Chou of Yin led seven hundred thousand soldiers into battle against King Wu of Chou and his eight hundred men.Yet King Chou’s army lost because of disunity while King Wu’s men defeated him because of perfect unity.
 For example, there was a battle between King Zhou of Yin with his 700,000 soldiers and King Wu of Zhou with his 800. King Zhou was defeated due to disunity, whereas King Wu won because of unity.

一人の心なれども二つの心あれば其の心たが()いて(じょう)ずる事なし、

 Even an individual at cross purposes with himself is certain to end in failure.
 An individual at odds with himself will not achieve anything, because his heart is not dedicated to a single purpose.

百人・千人なれども一つ心なれば必ず事を(じょう)ず、

 Yet a hundred or even a thousand people can definitely attain their goal, if they are of one mind.
 Even if there are 100 or 1,000 people, if they are united with one heart, they can definitely accomplish anything.

日本国の人人は多人なれども体同異心なれば諸事(じょう)ぜん事かたし、

 Though numerous, the Japanese will find it difficult to accomplish anything, because they are divided in spirit.
 Although there are many people in Japan, they will find it difficult to accomplish anything because of disunity.

日蓮が一類は異体同心なれば人人すくなく候へども大事を(じょう)じて・一定法華経ひろまりなんと覚へ候、

 In contrast,although Nichiren and his followers are few, because they are different in body, but united in mind, they will definitely accomplish their great mission of widely propagating the Lotus Sutra.
 In contrast, I believe that despite their small numbers, if Nichiren and his followers have the spirit of many in body, one in mind, they certainly will accomplish their great purpose and the Lotus Sutra will spread.

悪は多けれども一善にかつ事なし、

 Though evils may be numerous, they cannot prevail over a single truth,
 No matter how numerous evils may be, they will never defeat the single truth.

(たと)へば多くの火あつまれども一水には()ゑぬ、

 just as many raging fires are quenched by a single shower of rain.
 This can be compared to a stream of water extinguishing many raging fires.

此の一門も又かくのごとし。 

 This principle also holds true with Nichiren and his followers.
 This is true of Nichiren and his followers.

Gosho 種種御振舞御書 The Actions of the Votary of the Lotus Sutra


 一丈のほり()を・こへぬもの十丈・二十丈のほりを・こうべきか。

 If a person cannot manage to cross a moat ten feet wide, how can he cross one that is a hundred or two hundred feet?

 日蓮に()りて日本国の有無(うむ)はあるべし、

 The destiny of Japan depends solely upon Nichiren.

(たと)へば(いえ)に柱なければ・たもたず人に(たましい)なければ死人なり、


 A house without pillars collapses, and a person without a soul is dead.


 日蓮は日本の人の魂なり。


 Nichiren is the soul of the people of this country


 かかる日蓮を用いぬるとも()しく()やまはば国亡ぶべし。

 Even if my counsel is heeded, if I am not given due respect as the votary of the Lotus Sutra, then the country will perish.

 日蓮は南無妙法蓮華経と唱うる故に、二十余年所を追はれ二度まで御勘気(ごかんき)(こうむ)り最後には此の山にこもる  

 Because I chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, I have for over twenty years been driven from place to place. Twice I have incurred the wrath of the authorities, and in the end I have retired to this mountain.

Gosho 生死一大事血脈抄

火は(やき)(てらす)を以て行と為し

The function of fire is to burn and give light.

水は垢穢(くえ)(きよむ)るを以て行と為し

The function of water is to wash away filth.

風は塵埃(じんあい)を払ふを以て行と為し・又人畜草木の為に(たましい)となるを以て行と為し

The winds blow away dust and breathe life into plants, animals, and human beings.

大地は草木を生ずるを以て行と為し・天は(うるお)すを以て行と為す

The earth produces the grasses and trees, and heaven provides nourishing moisture.

妙法蓮華経の五字も又是くの如し、

The five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo are also like that.

本化地涌(ほんげじゆ)()(やく)是なり

They are the cluster of blessings brought by the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, disciples of the Buddha in his true identity.

相構(あいかま)え相構えて強盛の大信力を致して南無妙法蓮華経・臨終正念と祈念し給へ

Be resolved to summon forth the great power of faith, and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with the prayer that your faith will be steadfast and correct at the moment of death.

生死一大事の血脈此れより(ほか)に全く求むることなかれ

Never seek any other way to inherit the ultimate Law of life and death, and manifest it in your life.

煩悩即菩提・生死即涅槃とは是なり

Only then will you realize that earthly desires are enlightenment, and that the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana.

信心の血脈(けちみゃく)なくんば法華経を(たも)つとも無益(むやく)なり

Evenembracing the Gohonzon [Lotus Sutra] would be useless without the heritage offaith.

Gosho 生死一大事血脈抄


 伝教大師云く「生死の二法は一心の妙用、有無の二道は本覚の真徳」

 The Great Teacher Dengyō states, “The two phases of life and death are the wonderful workings of one mind. The two ways of existence and nonexistence are the true functions of an inherently enlightened mind.”

 総じて日蓮が弟子檀那(だんな)等・自他(じた)彼此(ひし)の心なく水魚(すいぎょ)(おもい)を成して異体同心にして南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る処を生死(しょうじ)一大事の血脈(けちみゃく)とは云うなり

 All disciples and lay supporters of Nichiren should chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with the spirit of many in body but one in mind, transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim. This spiritual bond is the basis for the universal transmission of the ultimate Law of life and death.
 All disciples and believers of Nichirten should chant Nam-myoho-Renge-Kyo with the spirit of many in body, one in mind, overcoming all differences among themselves, just like fish being inseparable from the water in which they swim. This is called the heritage of the ultimate Law of life and death.

(しか)(いま)日蓮が弘通(ぐつう)する処の所詮(しょせん)是なり

 Herein lies the true goal of Nichiren’s propagation.
 This is also what Nichiren is trying to propagate now in the Latter Day of the Law.

()(しか)らば広宣流布の大願も叶うべき者か

 When you are so united, even the great desire for Kōsen Ruhu [widespread propagation can be fulfilled].
 When you are so united, even the great aspiration for kōsen rufu can be fulfilled without fail.

(あまつさ)え日蓮が弟子の中に異体異心の者(これ)有れば例せば城者として城を破るが如し

 But if any of Nichiren’s disciples disrupt the unity of many in body but one in mind, theywould be like warriors who destroy their own castle from within.
 But if there are those who practice in the state of many in body, different in mind, and disrupt unity among Nichiren’s disciples, they will destroy their own castle from within.

Gosho 諸法実相抄一 The True Aspect of All Phenomena


 日蓮・末法に生れて上行菩薩の弘め給うべき所の妙法を先立(さきだち)(ほぼ)ひろめ、

 Although not worthy of the honor, I, Nichiren, was nevertheless the first to spread the Mystic Law entrusted to Bodhisattva Superior Practices for propagation in the Latter Day of the Law.

 つくりあらはし給うべき本門寿量品の古仏たる釈迦仏・迹門宝塔品の時・涌出し給う多宝仏・涌出品の時・出現し給ふ地涌の菩薩等を(まず)作り顕はし奉る事、()(ぶん)(ざい)にはいみじき事なり、

 I was also the first, though only Bodhisattva Superior Practices is so empowered, to inscribe [the object of devotion as] the embodiment of Shakyamuni Buddha from the remote past as revealed in the “Life Span” chapter of the essential teaching, of Many Treasures Buddha who appeared when the “Treasure Tower” chapter of the theoretical teaching was preached, and of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth who arrived with the “Emerging from the Earth” chapter.

 日蓮をこそ・にくむとも内証には・いかが及ばん

 Though people may hate me, they cannot possibly alter the fact of my enlightenment.

祈祷抄 二 On prayer 2

行者は必ず不実なりとも・智慧はをろかなりとも・身は不浄なりとも・戒徳は備へずとも・南無妙法蓮華経と申さば必ず守護し給うべし、

It makes no difference if the practitioner himself is lacking in worth, defective in wisdom, impure in his person, and lacking in virtue derived from observing the precepts. So long as he chants Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they will invariably protect him.

袋きたなしとて(こがね)(すつ)る事なかれ・

One does not throw away gold because the bag that holds it is dirty;

()(らん)にく()まば栴檀(せんだん)あるべからず、

one does not ignore the sandalwood trees because of the foul odor of the eranda trees around them;

谷の池を不浄なりと嫌はば(はちす)を取らざるべし、

and one does not refuse to gather lotuses because the pond in the valley where they grow is not clean.

行者を(きら)い給はば(ちかい)を破り給いなん。

If they ignore the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra, they will be going against their vow.

正像既に過ぎぬれば持戒は(いち)の中の虎の如し・智者は(りん)(かく)よりも(まれ)ならん、

Now that the Former and Middle Days of the Law are over, persons who observe the precepts are as rare as tigers in a market place, and persons of wisdom are harder to find than the horns of a ch’i-lin.

月を待つまでは灯を(たのむ)べし、宝珠のなき処には金銀も宝なり、

While waiting for the moon to rise, one must rely upon a lantern, and when there are no true gems at hand, gold and silver must serve as jewels.

(はく)()の恩をば黒烏(こくう)に報ずべし・聖僧の恩をば凡僧に報ずべし、

The debt of gratitude one owes to a white crow may be repaid to a black crow, and the debt one owes to a sage priest may be repaid to an ordinary priest.

とくとく利生(りしょう)をさづけ給へと強盛に申すならば・いかでか祈りのかな()はざるべき。

So, if you earnestly pray that blessings be given to you without delay, how can your prayers fail to be answered?

祈祷抄 一 On Prayer 1

いかに申す事は・をそきやらん、

One may ask why the results of these vows should be so long in appearing.

大地はささばはづ()るるとも、

And yet, though one might point at the earth and miss it,
Even if one missed while pointing at he earth,

虚空(おおぞら)をつなぐ者はありとも・

though one might bind up the sky,
even if one tied up the sky,

潮の()()ぬ事はありとも、日は西より出づるとも・

though the tides might cease to ebb and flow and the sun rise in the west,
even if the ebb and flow of the tide ceased, and even if the sun rose in the west,

法華経の行者の祈りのかな()はぬ事はあるべからず、

it could never come about that the prayers of the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra would go unanswered.
the prayers of the votary of the Lotus Sutra would never be unanswered.

法華経の行者を諸の菩薩・人天・八部等・二聖・二天・十羅刹等・千に一も来つて()ほり給はぬ事(はべ)らば、(かみ)は釈迦諸仏をあなづり奉り、(しも)は九界をたぼらかす(とが)あり、

If the bodhisattvas, the human and heavenly beings, the eight kinds of nonhuman beings, the two sages, the two heavenly deities, and the ten demon daughters would by some unlikely chance fail to appear and protect the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra, then above them they would be showing disdain for Shakyamuni and the other Buddhas, and below they would be guilty of deceiving the beings of the nine realms.

Gosho 兄弟抄一 Letter to Brothers 1

さればこの法華経は一切の諸仏の眼目(がんもく)、教主釈尊の本師なり、

The Lotus Sutra [Gohonzon] is the eye of all the Buddhas. It is the original teacher of Shakyamuni Buddha himself, the lord of teachings.

一字一点も()つる人あれば千万の父母を殺せる罪にも()ぎ、十方の仏の身より血を出す罪にも()へて候けるゆへに三五の塵点をば()(そうらい)けるなり。

If one discards one word or even one brush stroke of the sutra, the offense is graver than that of one who kills one’s parents ten million times over, or even of one who sheds the blood of all the Buddhas in the ten directions. This is why those who forsook the Lotus Sutra had to suffer for a period of major world system dust particle kalpas or numberless major world system dust particle kalpas.

法華経には「如来の現在にすら猶怨(なおおん)(しつ)多し(いわん)や滅度の後をや」、

The Lotus Sutra reads, “Since hatred and jealousy toward this sutra abound even when the Thus Come One is in the world, how much more will this be so after his passing?”

又云く「一切世間(あだ)多くして信じ(がた)し」

It also reads, “It will face much hostility in the world and be difficult to believe.”

涅槃経に云く「(よこしま)死殃(しおう)(かか)訶嘖(かしゃく)罵辱(めにく)(べん)(じょう)閉繋(へいけい)・飢餓・困苦・是くの如き等の現世の軽報(けいほう)を受けて地獄に()ちず」等云云、

The Nirvana Sutra states, “By suffering an untimely death, rebuke, curses or humiliation, beatings with a whip or rod,imprisonment, starvation, adversity, or other minor hardships in this lifetime,one can avoid falling into hell.”

般泥(はつないおん)経に云く「衣服不足にして飲食(おんじき)()()なり、

The Parinirvāna Sutra says: “They may be poorly clad and poorly fed,

財を求めるに利あらず、

seek wealth in vain,

貧賤の家及び邪見の家に生れ、

be born to an impoverished and lowly family or one with erroneous views,

或いは王難及び余の種種の人間の苦報に()う、

or be persecuted by their sovereign. They may besubjected to various other sufferings and retributions.

現世に軽く受くるは()護法(ごほう)功徳力(くどくりき)()る故なり」等云云

It is due to the blessings obtained by protecting the Law that they can diminish in thislifetime their suffering and retribution.”

Gosho 兄弟抄 Letter to Brothers

 此の法門のゆへには(たと)(おとこ)に害せらるるとも悔ゆる事なかれ、

 You two wives should have no regrets even if your husbands do you harm because of your faith in this teaching.

 一同して夫の心をいさ()めば竜女(りゅうにょ)が跡をつぎ末代悪世の女人の成仏の手本と成り給うべし、

 If both of you unite in encouraging your husbands’ faith, you will follow the path of the dragon king’s daughter and become a model for women attaining Buddhahood in the evil latter age.

 此くの如くおはさば設ひいかなる事ありとも、日蓮が二聖・二天・十羅刹(らせつ)・釈迦・多宝に申して順次生(じゅんじしょう)に仏に()し・たてまつるべし

 Insofar as you can act this way, no matter what may happen, Nichiren will tell the two sages, the two heavenly kings, the ten demon daughters, Shakyamuni, and Many Treasures to make you Buddhas in every future existence.

心の師とは・なるとも心を師とせざれとは六波羅蜜経の文なり。

 A passage inthe Six Pāramitās Sutra says to become the master of your mind rather than let your mind master you.

(たと)ひ・いかなる・わ()らはしき事ありとも夢になして只法華経の事のみ()はぐら()せ給うべし、

 Whatever trouble occurs, regard it as no more than a dream, and think only of the Lotus Sutra.
 No matter what troubles may disturb you, regard them as fleeting as a dream and always think only of the Lotus Sutra.

 中にも日蓮が法門は(いにし)へこそ信じかたかりしが今は前前()ひをきし事既に()ひぬればよし()なく謗ぜし人人も悔る心あるべし、

 Nichiren’s teaching was especially difficult to believe at first, but now that my prophecies have been fulfilled, those who slandered without reason have come to repent.

(たと)ひこれより後に信ずる男女ありとも各各(おのおの)には()思ふべからず、
Even if in the future other men and women become my believers,they will not replace you in my heart.

始は信じてありしかども世間のをそ()ろしさに()つる人人()ずを()らず、

Among those who believed at first, many later discarded their faith, fearing that society would reject them.

其の中に返つて(もと)より謗ずる人人よりも強盛にそし()る人人又あまた(数多)あり

Among these are some who oppose me more furiously than those who slandered from the beginning.

在世にも(ぜん)(しょう)比丘(びく)等は始は信じてありしかども後に()つるのみならず返つて仏をはう()じ奉りし()へに仏も叶い給はず無間地獄に()ちにき

In Shakyamuni Buddha’s lifetime, the monk Sunakshatra believed the Buddha at first, then later not only backslid, but also slandered so viciously that even the Buddha could not save him from falling into the hell of incessant suffering.

Gosho 兄弟抄三 Letter to Brothers 3


 かかる浅き事だにも成ぜんとすれば四魔(きそい)て成じかたし、

 Therefore, how could it measure up to the Lotus Sutra? The four devils fiercely oppose the mastery of even such a shallow art as the occult.

(いか)に況や法華経の極理・南無妙法蓮華経の七字を始めて(たも)たん日本国の弘通(ぐつう)(はじめ)ならん人の弟子檀那とならん人人の大難の来らん事をば(ことば)をもつて尽し難し心をもつて・()()かるべしや。

 How much greater, then, are the tribulations that will confront the disciples and lay supporters of the person who is the first to embrace and the first to propagate in Japan the seven characters of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the ultimate principle of the Lotus Sutra. It is impossible to imagine, let alone describe in words.

()の上摩訶止(まかし)(かん)の第五の巻の一念三千は今一重立ち入たる法門ぞかし、

 The doctrine of three thousand realms in a single moment of life revealed in the fifth volume of Great Concentration and Insight is especially profound.

 此の法門を申すには必ず魔出来(しゅったい)すべし、

 If you propagate it, devils will arise without fail.

 魔競はずは正法と知るべからず、

 If they did not, there would be no way of knowing that this is the correct teaching.

 第五の巻に云く「(ぎょう)()既に勤めぬれば三障四魔紛然として競い起る

 One passage from the same volume reads: “As practice progresses and understanding grows,the three obstacles and four devils emerge in confusing form, vying with one another to interfere . . .

乃至(ないし)随う可らず(おそ)る可らず、

 One should be neither influenced nor frightened by them.

 之に随えば(まさ)に人をして悪道に向わしむ、

If one fall sunder their influence, one will be led into the paths of evil.

 之を(おそ)れば正法を修することを(さまた)ぐ」等云云、

 If one is frightened by them, one will be prevented from practicing the correct teaching.”

 此の釈は日蓮が身に当るのみならず門家の明鏡なり、

 This statement not only applies to me, but also is a guide for my followers.

(つつし)んで習い伝えて未来の()(りょう)とせよ。

 Reverently make this teaching your own, and transmit it as an axiom of faith for future generations.
