Gosho 御義口伝下 Orally Transmitted teachings on the Lotus Sutra Part 2

 信の(ところ)()あり、解の処に信あり、然りと雖も信を以て成仏を決定(けつじょう)するなり、

Where there is belief or faith, there is understanding, and where there is understanding, there will be faith. However,it is faith that makes it absolutely certain that one will attain Buddhahood.
Faith leads one to understanding; understanding leads one to faith. However, faith is the determining factor for attaining Buddhahood.

(いま)日蓮等の(たぐ)い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る者是なり云云。

Now Nichiren and his followers, who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, are certain of such attainment.

 御義口伝に云く、(ずい)とは事理に随順するを云うなり、

The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings says: “Respond” means to respond to and comply with actuality and principle.

()とは自他共に喜ぶ事なり、

“Joy”means that oneself and others together experience joy.

 事とは五百塵点(じんてん)()顕本(けんぽん)に随順するなり、

By actuality is meant responding to and complying with the actual fact of Shakyamuni manifesting [in this life] his original state [of enlightenment] number less major world system dust particle kalpas ago.

 理とは理顕本に随うなり、

By principle is meant responding to the principle of ordinary people being able to manifest their original states.

 所詮寿量品の内証に随順するを随とは云うなり、

In the end, then, responding means responding to and complying with the inner truth of the “Life Span” chapter.

 然るに自他共に智慧と慈悲と有るを喜とは云うなり、

When that is done, then both oneself and others together will take joy in their possession of wisdom and compassion.

 所詮今日蓮等の類い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る時、必ず無作(むさ)三身の仏に成るを喜とは云うなり。

Now, when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they are expressing joy in the fact that they will inevitably become Buddhas eternally endowed with the three bodies.

Gosho 御義口伝下 Orally Transmitted teachings on the Lotus Sutra Part 2

第十 (もん)()所説(しょせつ) (かい)信伏(しんぷく)随従(ずいじゅう)の事

 Point Ten, on the words.

 The tenth.

()の大神通力、楽説(ぎょうせつ)弁力(べんりき)大善(だいぜん)寂力(じゃくりき)を得たるを見て、其の所説を聞いて、皆信伏(しんぷく)随従(ずいじゅう)す」

“when they saw that he had gained great transcendental powers, the power to preach pleasingly and eloquently, the power of great goodness and tranquility, and when they heard his preaching, they all took faith in him and willingly became his followers”.

“They saw that he had gained great transcendental powers, the power to preach pleasingly, and the power of great peaceful nirvana, and when they heard his preaching, all believed, prostrated themselves, obeyed and followed him”.

 御義口伝に云く、聞とは名字即なり、

The Record of the Orally TransmittedTeachings says: The word “heard” refers to the stage of hearing the name and words of the truth, the second of the six stages of practice.

The Orally Conveyed Doctrine says: The word 'heard' refers to the initial stage of hearing that name.

 所詮は而強毒之(にごうどくし)の題目なり、

In effect, this passage concerns the daimoku that is “preached in a forceful manner, though it angers them”.

After all, it is the daimoku for chanting it forcibly and angering a person.

 皆とは上慢の四衆等なり、

The word “all” refers to the four kinds of believers who were overbearingly arrogant.

'All' means the arrogant believers of four kinds.

 信とは無疑曰(むぎわっ)(しん)なり、

The word “faith,” shin, refers to the faith or belief that is without doubt.

To ‘believe’ refers to the faiths that is without doubt.

 伏とは法華に帰伏するなり、

The word “willingly” which literally means “to submit,” indicates that one submits and gives full allegiance to the Lotus Sutra.

To ‘prostrate oneself' means the allegiance of the Lotus Sutra.

 随とは心を法華経に移すなり、

The word zui in the compound of zuijū,which literally means “to obey and follow” and is expressed as “became his followers” in the text, means that one’s mind is dedicated to the Lotus Sutra.

To ‘obey' means that one's mind obeys for the Lotus Sutra.

 従とは身を此の経に移すなり、

The word means that one’s body is dedicated to the Lotus Sutra.

To 'follow' means that one's body follows of the Lotus Sutra.

 所詮(いま)日蓮等の(たぐ)い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る行者は末法の不軽(ふきょう)菩薩なり。

In effect this is saying that now Nichiren and his followers, practitioners of the Lotus Sutra who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, are the bodhisattva Never Disparaging of the Latter Day of the Law.

After all, now Nichiren and his followers, votaries of the Lotus Sutra who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo aloud, are the Bodhisattva Never Disparaging in the latter day of the Law.

(Thirty important point of the chapter in the Bodhisattva Never Disparaging Always).

Gosho 御義口伝下 Orally Transmitted teachings on the Lotus Sutra Part 2

第五 閻浮提内(えんぶだいない) 広令(こうりょう)流布(るふ)の事

Point Five, on the passage

「世尊、(われ)(いま)神通力を以ての故に、是の経を守護して如来の滅後に()いて、閻浮提(えんぶだい)(うち)に広く流布(るふ)せしめて、断絶せざらしめん」

World-Honored One, I nowtherefore employ my transcendental powers to guard and protect this sutra. Andafter the Thus Come One has entered extinction, I will cause it to be widelypropagated throughout Jambudvīpa and will see that it never comes to an end.”

御義口伝に云く、此の内の字は東西北の三方を嫌える文なり、

The Record of the Orally TransmittedTeachings says: This word “throughout,” or more literally “within,” impliesthat the three other directions, east, west, and north, are less favored.

広令(こうりょう)流布(るふ)とは法華経は南閻浮提(なんえんぶだい)(ばか)りに流布す可しと云う経文なり、

The sutra passage is saying that the LotusSutra is to be propagated only within the southern continent of Jambudvīpa.

此の内の字(これ)を案ず可し、

One should give careful thought to the word“within.”

(いま)日蓮等の(たぐ)い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る者は深く之を思う可きなり云云。

Now when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they must ponder this matter deeply.

Gosho 御義口伝下 Orally Conveyed Teachings. Part 2

第二 ()木孔(もっく)の事

PointTwo, on the passage “Encountering the Buddha is as difficult . . . as it is for a one-eyed turtle to encounter a floating log with a hole in it”.

The second. About ’the floating wood on vast ocean’.

御義口伝に云はく、()とは(しょう)()大孔(だいく)の二つ(これ)有り。

The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings says: There are two kinds of hole in a log, a small hole and a large hole.

The orally conveyed teachings say, hollow has two kinds of a small hollow and a big hollow.

(しょう)()とは四十余年の経教なり、大孔(だいく)とは法華経の題目なり。

The small hole corresponds to the sutra teachings set forth by Shakyamuni Buddha during the first more than forty years of his preaching life. The large hole corresponds to the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra.

The small hollow is the teachings of 40 several years and the big hollow is the title, daimoku, of the Lotus Sutra.

(いま)日蓮等の(たぐい)南無妙法蓮華経と唱へ(たてまつ)るは大孔(だいく)なり。

Now when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they are [like a one-eyed turtle encountering] a large hole in a log.

Now when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo aloud, they enter a large hollow of a floating holy tree.

一切衆生は一眼(いちげん)の亀なり。栴檀(せんだん)浮木(うきぎ)とは法華経なり。

The one-eyed turtle stands for all living beings, and the floating log of sandalwood is the Lotus Sutra.

The one-eyed turtle stands for all living beings, and the floating tree of sandalwood is the Lotus Sutra.

生死の大海に大孔ある浮木は法華経に(これ)在り云云。

This floating log with the large hole of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo that exists in the vast sea of the sufferings of birth and death is none other than the Lotus Sutra.

The Lotus Sutra has a floating holy tree having the large hollow, on the vast sea of the sufferings of birth and death.
