Discussion of Life Span Chapter

 Therefore, the saint was slandered and was bad-mouthed from the people of the provisional teachings and sects, or he received the persecution with a stick and a tree and a tile and the stone. In addition to this, he received a banishment twice, and he suffered a wound, and he encountered a big persecution that he sat at the place of Tatsunokuchi and he was about to be cut his neck. However, the first reason was because this was entrusted to him by Buddha, and the second reason was because he felt pity for us of now with great mercy and compassion. For these reasons, he endured the great persecutions, and he spread this marvelous Law of the radical teachings in the life span chapter. Thus, the cause that we now chant it aloud easily and attain Buddhahood ourselves is depends entirely on holy good will of the sect father namely Nichiren Daishonin.

16. Death in indestructibility.

16. Death in indestructibility.

After this, Nichiren went down the mountain of Minobu on September 8, and stayed in the house of Munenaka Ikegami in Musashi country. And in spite of the disease, he lectured about Rissho-Ankokuron for disciples.

Then October 8, after he appointed six priests among disciples, he entered the nirvana in the Ikegami house at the time of dragon [7 a.m. to 9 a.m.] October 13.

He leaves his wills.

“I, Nichiren, entrust the entirety of the Law that I have propagated throughout my life to Byakuren Ajari Nikko and designate him the great leader of propagation of the essential teachings. When the sovereign embraces this Law, erect the Sanctuary of Honmonji Temple at Mount Fuji. You must await the time. This is the practical religious precept of the Law. Above all, my disciples and others must obey this missive.
September in the fifth year of Ko'an (1282). N
ichiren”.

“I transmit Shakyamuni Buddha's teachings of fifty years to Byakuren Ajari Nikko. He should be the administrator of Kuonji Temple on Mt. Minobu. Crowd of laity or priests who oppose him are fellows of going against the Law.

The thirteenth day of October in the fifth year of Ko'an(1282). At place of Ikegami in Bushu Province. Nichiren".

Nichiren entrusted Nikko with the propagation of throughout world (kosen-rufu).

And, Nichiren warned to all monks who would follow him, "All of you would suffer Law punishment of nature if you do not place the name of sun first when you attach a name to yourself".

Nichiren teaches about the death of a person having faiths.

“Our entities or bodies that would die are phantom city. If we take this death as a death or extinction, our wholes are phantom city. But if have the wisdom that we see this death is in indestructibility, a place of treasure is there. The “Life span” chapter preaches these teachings; 'Still in truth I am not reaching into death'. To death of the concept of death itself is the true death. Now, when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they are revealing that the phantom city is none other than the land of the treasure. All of mountains and valleys and plains where we live are the land of eternally tranquil light”.Seven important points in the chapter of the parable of the phantom city in the orally conveyed teachings’.

Nichikan who is the 26th chief priest of Taisekiji Temple was born 400 years after Nichiren's passing away and he wrote the words of limitless thanks to Nichiren Daishonin of the founder of the sect who had endured the great persecution and expressed the gohonzon.

Therefore, the saint was slandered and was bad-mouthed from the people of the provisional teachings and sects, or he received the persecution with a stick and a tree and a tile and the stone. Orally Transmitted teachings on the Lotus Sutra

 These entities or bodies of ours are wiped out, and in this sense it is a phantom city.

 Our entities or bodies that would die are phantom city.

 That is, if we take this wiping out as a true wiping out or extinction, then our bodies are a phantom city.

 If we take this death as a death or extinction, our wholes are phantom city.

 But if we have the wisdom to see that this wiping out is not a true wiping out or extinction but only an aspect of eternal life, then it is a place of treasure,a treasure land.

 But if have the wisdom that we see this death is in indestructibility, a place of treasure is there.

 This is what the “Life Span” chapter means when it says, “But in truth I do not pass into extinction”.

 The “Life span” chapter preaches this teachings; 'Still in truth I am not reaching into death'.

 To wipe out the concept of wiping out itself is the true wiping out.

 To death of the concept of death itself is the true death.

 Now, when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they are revealing that the phantom city is none other than the treasure land.

 Now, when Nichiren and his followers chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, they are revealing that the phantom city is none other than the land of the treasure.

 These mountain valleys and broad plains where we live are all, every one of them, treasure lands of Eternally Tranquil Light.

 All of mountains and valleys and plains where we live are the land of eternally tranquil light.

15, Nikko who succeeds to Nichiren.

15, Nikko who succeeds to Nichiren.

Nichiren repeatedly preached it that Japan would fall by the Mongolia forces.

Mongolia attacked Japan at 140,000 soldiers and 4,400 warships again in 1281.

Though Mongolia approached Japan on great boats by the force that conquered China, they encountered a typhoon and were defeated.

Nichiren who advocated the destruction of the country to this result had kept silence, but the Buddhist priest of various sects boasted that it was the result of own prayer.

Nichikan of the 26 generation in Fuji Taisekiji temple said, "Because various gods received the commandments from the sect founder Nichiren, gods helped the country". Nichikan is declaring that the victory of Japan is an achievement of Nichiren. (Commentary of ' The Duty of Repaying Good Will', Part One).

Nichiren who became 61 years old realized that the death was approaching to him and, in September 1282, he selected six chief priests.

Nissho Ben Ajari (62 years old).

Nichiro Daikoku Ajari (38 years old).

Nikko Byakuren Ajari (37 years old).

Niko Sado Ajari (39 years old).

Nicho Iyo Ajari (31 years old).

Nichiji Renge Ajari (33 years old).

Nichiren named his six disciples in order of entering the sect from past. The eldest was Nissho, 62, and the other five priests were all in their 30s.

Moreover, Nichiren appointed Byakuren Ajari Nikko from six people as the successor.

Nichiren preaches the reason.

“Especially, an announcement has already been made that six people were selected as the major disciples. However, the essence of the Lotus Sutra is directly conveyed only to a single person. I, Nichiren, have appointed Byakuren Ajari Nikko as the leader of the priests, and have entrusted him with my doctrines from cover to cover. From the leading senior priests to each individual disciple, all must obey this. As same as me, to the far-off future all of you must revere the successive leaders who would inherit the Law from Nikko. In addition, you should place the mandala of the direct line, to the main hall, whom Nikko inherited as the formal Gohonzon, even if the Buddhist priests who are the five people and followers widen this in all countries including Japan and Jambudvipa, the whole world. What is the reason? When Buddha was alive and after Buddha passed away, though these are different, the ceremony of the commission is same. For example, though there were the direct followers like the great four people and the sixty thousand bodhisattvas, Buddha decided Jogyo Bodhisattva as the great leader entrusted with the Law of essence. It is the same again now. Though there are six person and followers, and the several disciples, I determine it as the general who entrusts Nikko with the Law of essence.

Besides, he played a role as the vanguard, on a day of the banishment to an island of the Kocho year, and at the time of banishment of the Bun'ei year, and during either the period when I received other great calamity in various place, he acted as like a shadow following the form of Nichiren. Who will doubt this? Besides, the origin of the faiths of land steward of Mount Minobu is because Nikko civilized him with effort. My retirement is because Nikko have been familiar with Mimaki of the country of Kai”. ‘One Hundred and Six Clauses’.
