The handwriting genuine: Kamogawa city, possession of Kyoninji Temple. (Tangible Cultural Property Designated by Chiba Prefecture).

Starvation is the severe situation. Nobody sells even the rice of 180 milliliters to me. We will perhaps die of hunger. I will send back all of these disciples and stay here alone. Please hear this situation to the disciples.

We arrived Sakawa on twelfth day. I was in Takenoshita on thirteenth day, Kurumagaeshi was fourteenth day, Omiya was on fifteenth day, Nanbu was on sixteenth day, and I am here on seventeenth day today. Though I am not still decided, because this location in the mountains is the satisfactory to me, it is likely that I will remain here for a while.

In the end I will become alone and roam the country of Japan. But if I stay at anywhere, visit me to there.

Very truly yours,

Nichiren.

On seventeenth day.

To Lord Toki.
