Gosho 上野殿御返事(三災御書) About the Three Calamities.

We are troubled by revolt in our own country, thieves and bandits fill the land, enemies come from abroad to attack us, and all our thoughts are of armed conflict.

Thieves and bandits fill in our country by revolt. The enemies preoccupied with the fight come from abroad to attack us.

The people’s hearts are lacking in filial piety and they look on their own parents as strangers. Priests and nuns, embracing erroneous views, quarrel with one another like dogs and monkeys.

The people's minds are unfilial and they look on their own parents as strangers. Priests and nuns embrace wicked views and are as though both dogs and monkeys meet.

Because of the lack of pity and compassion, the heavenly deities cease to guard this country of ours. Because of the prevalence of erroneous views, the three treasures of Buddhism cast it aside.

If there is not mercy, the heavens either cease to guard this country. If have wicked views, one is abandoned by either the three treasures of Buddhism.

The pestilence seemed to have subsided for a time, but now the evil spirits appear to have come upon us again. In provinces to the north, provinces to the east, provinces to the west, and provinces to the south, everywhere alike we hear the cries of those suffering from sickness.

The pestilence seemed to have subsided for a time, but now the demons appear to have come upon us again. In the north country, the east country, the west country, and the south country, everywhere alike I hear the voice of grief of those suffering from sickness.
