35. To Sado of the depth of winter. (2)

‘Letter to five Followers in Prison of the Mud Wall’. Genuine writing; Myokakuji temple in Kyoto possesses this in complete condition.

In addition, there is a letter which addressed to Shijo Kingo at this time.

Nichiren praised Kingo who had shared life and death in Tatsunokuchi, and he recommended him more strong and active faiths.


“You accompanied Nichiren as the votary of the Lotus Sutra and vowed to follow me in death. Hun-Yen has cut open his stomach and inserted own liver to his dead lord Duke Yi [for saving him from shame and dishonor]. Your deed is much superior to Hun-Yen astonishingly. When I visit the Eagle Peak, I will first express how Shijo Kingo resolved to die for the Lotus Sutra!

Also, I hear unofficially that by the order of the ruler of Kamakura he send me to Sado country. Out of the three kinds of heavens' light, the heavens of the moon spared my life at Tatsunokuchi by appearing as a shining object, and the heavens of star descended four or five days ago to greet me. Now only the heavens of the sun remain, and he is certain to protect me. What reliable! How encouraging! The chapter of 'the master of the Law' says, 'I, Buddha, will send the person of the incarnation and I will let them have to guard him'. This sentence leaves no room for doubt. The chapter of 'comfortable act' says, “Swords and staves will not touch him”. The chapter of Kannon bodhisattva states, 'And sword will break to pieces'. There is nothing of a superficial decoration in these texts of sutra. The strong and active faiths are precious indeed! Very truly yours”.


Hun-Yen is a faithful vassal of the Duke Yi of the Wei Country in the Chinese Chunqiu Ages. When the Duke Yi was attacked in Beidi of the enemy in B. C. 660 and was murdered, the body of the Duke Yi was damaged, and his internal organs were scattered mercilessly, and Hun Yen cried when Hun Yen had finished a duty as a messenger and returned to the home country, and it is said that for hiding the shame of the Duke himself, he cut his stomach, and take his entrails, and had put it into the internal organs of the Duke Yi, and he died. Nichiren praised that a thought to sacrifice himself for a teacher of Shijo Kingo is much superior to Hung-Yen.

In Kamakura, there was a dungeon, it was dug and was covered with the frame by the tree.

Five disciples of Nichiren including Nichiro were imprisoned to here.

A robust soldier stands outside.

Powdery snow danced calmly in the sky.

While Nichiro held the wooden frame of the dungeon, he looked up at the sky and prayed for the safety of teacher Nichiren who had become falling into enemy hands in the same way. He is a 26-year-old young man monk.

"Good luck! Priest Nichiren".

Throwing off sorrowful thought, Nichiren sends a letter to the Nichiro and the others who became falling into enemy hands on the charge of innocence.


"On the seventh day of this month I am to leave for the country of Sado.

Because all of you are reading the Lotus Sutra itself with your lives, this will offer the repose of the soul to you as well as to your parents, your brothers and sisters, and living and dead.

When I feel cold this evening, there is no way I can tell you how hurt it is, not about myself, but about all of you. If you have been released from a turnkey, please come to here in the spring of next year. Let us reunite respectfully". Letter to five Followers in Prison of the Mud Wall’.


Nichiren have instructed strictly at all times "Do not think of a wife, a child, and relatives at all". But he grieved like own happening when disciple encountered a persecution, and he worried about the situation falling into its hardship. He had two faces of a merciful mother, at the same time a severe father.

末法の本仏の立場で法華経二十八品を後継者、日興上人に口伝した書【御義口伝 下】要点解説(108)

【普賢品六箇の大事】

第六 此人不久当詣道場の事 (その二)

尋ねて云く、今の法華経に於て、序品には首(はじ)めに如の字を置き(注)終りの普賢品には去の字を置く(注)羅什三蔵(注)の心地何なる表事の法門ぞや、
答て云く、今の経の法体は実相と久遠との二義を以て正体と為すなり、始の如の字は実相を表し、終りの去の字は久遠を表するなり。

 其の故は実相は理なり、久遠は事なり。理は空の義なり、空は如の義なり、之に依て如をば理空に相配するなり。釈に云く「如は不異に名く即ち空の義なり」と

久遠は事なり、其の故は本門寿量の心は事円の三千を以て正意と為すなり。

去は久遠に当るなり、去は開の義、如は合の義なり、開は分別の心なり、合は無分別の意なり。

此の開合を生仏に配当する時は、合は仏界、開は衆生なり。
序品の始に如の字を顕したるは生仏不二(注)の義なり、迹門は不二の分なり、不変真如なる故なり。

此の如是我聞の如をば不変真如の如と習うなり、空仮中の三諦には如は空、是は中、我聞は仮諦、迹門は空を面と為す故に不二の上の而二なり。
然る間、而二の義を顕す時、同聞衆を別に列ぬるなり。




序品には首めに如の字を置き
鳩摩羅什により漢訳された妙法蓮華経は以下の様に、序品第一から始まる。その最初の文は「是我聞」の偈となる。
妙法蓮華経  姚秦三蔵法師 鳩摩羅什奉 詔訳
妙法蓮華経 序品 第一
是 我聞 一時 仏住 王舎城 耆闍崛山中(注) 与大比丘衆万二千人倶

終りの普賢品には去の字を置く
妙法蓮華経の最後の品である普賢品の最後は下記の様に「」の次で終えている。

一切大会 皆大歓喜 受持仏語 作礼而


三蔵法師(さんぞうほうし)
訳僧を意味する。

耆闍崛山中
霊鷲山のこと。

羅什三蔵
妙法蓮華経の役僧(344年 - 413年)
鳩摩羅什は生前、「私が訳した経典に誤りがなければ荼毘に付しても舌は焼けない」と遺言していたが、火葬したところ、舌だけが焼け残ったと伝えられている。
法華経の完全な訳品は「正法華経、妙法蓮華経、添品妙法蓮華経」の三本存在するが、唯一、妙法蓮華経だけが普及し、特に日本においては僧だけでなく一般の信徒により日常的に読誦されている。世界的にも事実上法華経といえば妙法蓮華経を指し示す。
日蓮大聖人は「諫暁八幡抄」で鳩摩羅什を次の様に称えられておられます。
然るに月氏より漢土に経を渡せる訳人は一百八十七人なり其の中に羅什三蔵一人を除きて前後の一百八十六人は純乳に水を加へ薬に毒を入たる人人なり、此の理を弁へざる一切の人師末学等設い一切経を読誦し十二分経を胸に浮べたる様なりとも生死を離る事かたし又現在に一分のしるしある様なりとも天地の知る程の祈とは成る可からず」と。

生仏不二
生仏一如とも。
衆生と仏の法身とは平等不二で差別がない事を意味している。

末法の本仏の立場で法華経二十八品を後継者、日興上人に口伝した書【御義口伝 下】要点解説(107)

【普賢品六箇の大事】

第六 此人不久当詣道場の事 (その一)

御義口伝に云く、此人とは法華経の行者なり、法華経を持ち奉る処を当詣道場と云うなり、此を去つて彼に行くには非ざるなり。
道場とは十界の衆生の住処を云うなり、

今、日蓮等の類い南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る者の住処は山谷曠野皆寂光土なり、此れを道場と云うなり。

 此因無易故云直至の釈之を思う可し、此の品の時、最上第一の相伝あり。釈尊八箇年の法華経を八字に留めて末代の衆生に譲り給うなり。
八字とは当起遠迎当如敬仏(注)の文なり、此の文までにて経は終るなり。

 当の字は未来なり。当起遠迎とは、必ず仏の如くに法華経の行者を敬う可しと云う経文なり。
法師品には於此経巻敬視如仏と云えり、八年の御説法の口開きは南無妙法蓮華経方便品の諸仏智慧、終りは当起遠迎当如敬仏の八字なり(注)

但此の八字を以て法華一部の要路とせりされば文句の十に云く「当起遠迎当如敬仏よりは其の信者の功徳を結することを述す」と。
法華一部は信の一字を以て本とせり云云。


当起遠迎当如敬仏
下記普賢品終段の文にある偈
[原文]
是故普賢 若見受持 是経典者 当起遠迎 当如敬仏
[和訳]
是の故に普賢よ、 若し 是の経典を受持する者をれば、当に起きて遠くに迎ること
当に仏を敬う如くにすべし。

八年の御説法の口開きは南無妙法蓮華経方便品の諸仏智慧、終りは当起遠迎当如敬仏の八字なり
上記は、日蓮大聖人が、釈尊が霊鷲山で八年間に渡って説かれて妙法蓮華経は、方便品の「諸仏智慧(注)」で始まり、普賢品の「当起遠迎当如敬仏」で終わり決せられている事を示されておられます。

諸仏智慧
方便品冒頭の以下の文にある偈


爾時世尊 従三昧 安詳而起 告舎利弗

諸仏智慧 甚深無量 其智慧門 難解難入

一切声聞 辟支仏 所不能知

(殿)のゝ御子息等も()への代は()かうべしとをぼしめせ。

In addition, as for your children, please think that they will flourish to the far future.

此の事は一代聖教をも引きて百千まい()()くとも、()くべしとはをもわねども、やせ()()いと申し身もくる()しく候へば、事々申さず。

It does not seem that I can write even if I quote the holy teachings of Buddha of the lifetime and write this happening to one hundred pages or ten hundred pages, but I do not state much because having emaciation, I am in bad condition.

あわれあわれ、いつかげざん(見参)に入て申し候はん。

Super! Excellent! I would like to meet you directly sometime and state it.

又むかいまいらせ候ひぬれば、あまりのうれ()しさに、かた()られ候はず候へばあらあら申す。

However, I state an outline now because I think that I am not able to speak in the fulness of my mind if I will meet you directly.

よろずは心にすい()()からせ給へ。

Please guess all from your mind.

女房の御事同じくよろこぶと申させ給へ。恐々謹言。

Similarly, please inform your wife that I am rejoicing about the splendid faiths of her. Very truly yours,
