末法の本仏の立場で法華経二十八品を後継者、日興上人に口伝した書【御義口伝 下】要点解説(78)


 第一 不如受持 此法華経 乃至一四句偈の事

御義口伝に云く、法華経とは一経廿八品(注)なり、一四句偈(注)とは題目の五字と心得可きなり云云。


一経廿八品
妙法蓮華経は序品第一から普賢菩薩勧発品第二十八迄の全二十八品(章)で構成されている。

一四句偈
薬王品第二十三の下記の文にある偈を指している。
[原文]
若復有人 以七宝満 三千大千世界 供養於仏
及大菩薩 辟支仏 阿羅漢 是人所得功徳
不如受持 此法華経 乃至一四句偈 其福最多
[和訳]
若し復人有つて、七宝を以つて三千大千世界(銀河宇宙)を満たし、仏を供養し、
及び大菩薩、辟支仏(注)、阿羅漢に供養せん。是の人の得る所の功徳も、
この法華経の、乃至一四句偈を受持する、その福の最も多きには如かじ

上記の文は法華経を一四句偈をも受持することの偉大な功徳を説かれていますが、
末法の御本仏日蓮大聖人は、この法華経の一四句偈とは末法においては『題目の五字つまり妙法蓮華経と心得可きなり』と断じられておられます。

辟支仏(びゃくしぶつ)
二乗つまり声聞、縁覚の縁覚を意味し、師なくしてひとりで悟るので独覚とも称す。
例えば、ニュートンがリンゴが木から落ちるのを見て「万有引力の法則」を思いついてような境涯。

32. Escape from the Crisis (2)

By the way, Nichiren escaped from a crisis, but was in the beach for a while after this.

Since he was taken by the Shogunate, he has to behave himself. He could avoid the execution, but an additional command might be issued. Five people including Nichirou are being imprisoned to the cave prison yet. The tense critical situation did not have the change.

The messenger came before long from the Shogunate, but its statement was like a dolt thing.


“I waited for long, and then I was told to proceed to the place called Echi of Sagami. Though someone would have to guide us to there, none of us knew that road. However, after we had waited for some time, one soldier said, “Here's the road you should go”. Setting off, we followed the road and around noon reached Echi. We then entered to the residence of Homma Rokuro Saemon”. ‘The Acts of the Votary of the Lotus Sutra’.


The messenger said that Nichiren must go to Echi of Sagami. It is present Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

But there is not a person to guide.

There was the person who told that it would be probably this road when they took a rest for a while.

Is leisurely very much. However, Nichiren supposed that he would become the banishment to Sado island when he heard this notice. Honma Rokuro-zaemon Shigetsura of the feudal lord of Echi is because he was a agent of military governor in Sado.

Nichiren arrived at the mansion of Honma Rokurozaemon Shigetsura before long, and surprisingly he asked Kingo to arrange liquor and rewarded to the soldier who came over from Kamakura.


“There I ordered a liquor and gave to the soldiers. When the time came for them to leave, some bowed their heads, joined their palms, and said politely: “We did not realize what kind of a man you are. We detested you because we had been told that you slandered Amida Buddha we worship. But now that we have seen with our own eyes what has happened to you, we understood how worthy a person you are, and we will discard the Nembutsu that we have done for so long”. Some of them took their prayer beads out of their tinder bags and abandoned these. Others pledged that they would never again chant the Nembutsu from now on. After they left, Rokuro Saemon's vassals took over the guard. Then Shijo Kingo either returned”.


The soldiers were rewarded by liquor and seemed relieved. This one day of them was a series of horrifying turbulence.

They were surprised that Nichiren who was more hateful than the enemy of the parent was a person totally different from the rumor. After all this time there was the sense to them that Nichiren was not a criminal and they themselves were offenders.

No wonder.

They thought that Nichiren cries and screams out when he is arrested, but he is stately. It was usual that the criminal sent to Tatsunokuchi, when it came to the push, begged for his own life until now. It was unexpected. Is he really an offender? Moreover, what a surprising priest to criticize great Hachiman! There might be some kind of horrible happening from now. That typical example was the bright shiner which appeared from darkness suddenly.

At first, they are with mass hysteria for hatred to Nichiren, and when Nichiren scolds the great bodhisattva Hachiman, they are seized with extreme uneasiness, finally they experience the depths of despair by the outbreak of a shiner. And now fatigue such as the mud was left. We can imagine the situation that they plod wearily.

Shijo Kingo was temporarily relieved, then he returned down to Kamakura. Hokibo and others began care of Nichiren.

Gosho 撰時抄 Selection of Times

()し大事を真言師・調伏するならばいよいよいそいで此の国ほろぶべしと申せしかば

If so grave a matter is entrusted to them, then the situation will only worsen rapidly and our country will face destruction.”

If they do, the nation will fall to ruin even more quickly".

“If the Shingon priests pray for a grave matter, this country will face ruin more quickly.”

(より)(つな)問うて云く、いつ()ごろ()()せ候べき、

[Hei no Saemon-no-jō] Yoritsuna then asked, “When do you think the Mongols will attack?”.

Then Yoritsuna asked,When will they attack?".

Yoritsuna then asked, “When do you think the Mongols will attack?”.

予言く、経文にはいつ(何時)とは()へ候はねども天の御気(みけ)(しき)いかりすくなからず・きう()に見へて候、

I replied,“The sacred scriptures do not indicate the time. But the signs show that heaven is extremely angry. It would appear that the attack is imminent.

I replied,I am unable to read the timing from the sutras, but judging by the signs from the heavens, which show the guardian deities becoming increasingly furious, it will not be long before the Mongols arrive and invade the land.

I replied, “The sutras do not indicate that timing. But the symptoms show that heavens are extremely angry. It would appear that the attack is imminent.

よも今年はすごし候はじと語りたりき、

It will probably occur before this year has ended.”

The invasion is likely to happen before the end of this year".

It will certainly occur before this year has ended.”

此の三つの大事は日蓮が申したるにはあらず、(ただ)(ひとえ)に釈迦如来の()(たましい)・我身に入りかわせ給いけるにや    

Yet it was not I, Nichiren, who made these three important pronouncements. Rather it was in all cases the spirit of the Thus Come One Shakyamuni that had taken possession of my body.

These three remonstrations were not made by Nichiren, but by Shakyamuni Buddha, whose soul entered my body.

It is not that I, Nichiren, stated these three important pronouncements. This was because the sacred soul of tathagata Buddha superseded my body.

我が身ながらも(よろこ)び身にあまる。 

And having personally experienced this, I am beside myself with joy.

Though these are the personal experience, I myself am full of joy.
