Gosho 開目抄 上 Opening the Eyes. Part One.

世尊・提婆(だいば)(だっ)()(なんじ)愚人(ぐにん)・人の(つばき)(くら)うと罵詈(めり)せさせ給しかば毒箭(どくせん)の胸に入るがごとく・をもひて・うらみて云く「()(どん)仏陀(ぶっだ)にはあらず我は(こく)(ぼん)(のう)嫡子(ちゃくし)阿難(あなん)尊者(そんじゃ)が兄・瞿曇が一類なり、

The World-Honored One cursed Devadatta, saying, “You are a fool who licks the spit of others!” Devadatta felt as though a poison arrow had been shot into his breast, and he cried out in anger, declaring: “Gautama is no Buddha! I am the eldest son of King Dronodana, the elder brother of the Venerable Ānanda, and kin to Gautama.

Because Buddha criticized Devadatta, saying “The thou are foolish person to eat the saliva of the person”, a poisonous arrow entered Deva's chest, and he bore a grudge, and said; “Shakyamuni is not Buddha. I am a real child of King Kokubon and is the older brother of the honorable priest Anandha, and I am kindred of Shakyamuni”.

いかにあしき事ありとも内内・教訓すべし、

“No matter what kind of evil conduct I might be guilty of, he ought to admonish me in private for it”.

“Even if I am very bad, he must instruct me secretly”.

(これ)()(ほど)の人天・大会(たいえ)(これ)(ほど)大禍(だいか)を現に向つて申すもの大人(だいにん)・仏陀の中にあるべしや、

But to publicly and outrageously accuse me of faults in front of this great assembly of human and heavenly beings—is this the behavior appropriate to a great man or a Buddha?

“Will the honorable Buddha say such a big mistake among such people of multitude in fact?”.

されば先先(さきざき)は妻のかたき今は一座のかたき今日よりは生生・世世に大怨敵(だいおんてき)となるべし」と誓いしぞかし、

“He showed himself to be my enemy in the past when he stole the woman I intended to marry, and he has shown himself my enemy at this gathering today. From this day forward, I will look upon him as my archenemy for lifetime after lifetime and age after age to come!”.

“He is the foe of the wife in old days, and now he is an enemy of a public place. I become a great deadly foe whenever being reincarnated for him from today”.

Gosho 唱法華題目抄 四 On Chanting the Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra

問うて云く法華経を信ぜん人は本尊(ならび)に行儀並に(つね)所行(しょぎょう)(いか)にてか候べき、

Question: For persons who place their faith in the Lotus Sutra, what is the proper object of devotion, and what rules are to be followed in acts of worship and daily religious practice?

Question: For persons who place their faiths in the Lotus Sutra, what is the proper object of devotion, and what rules should be followed in acts of worship and daily religious practice?

答えて云く、第一に本尊は法華経八巻一巻一(ぽん)(あるい)は題目を書いて本尊と定む可しと法師品(ほっしぼん)並に神力品(じんりきぼん)に見えたり、

Answer: First, with regard to the object of devotion, one should inscribe the eight volumes of the Lotus Sutra, or one volume, or one chapter, or simply the daimoku, or title, of the sutra, and make that the object of devotion, as is indicated in the “Teacher of the Law” and “Supernatural Powers” chapters of the sutra.

Answer: "The chapter of Law master" and "the chapter of God and the power" say, first, the believer writes eight scroll's Lotus Sutras or one scroll or one chapter or a title and must establish it as the object of worship.

又たへたらん人は釈迦如来・多宝仏を書いても造つても法華経の左右に之を立て奉るべし、

And those persons who are able to do so further should write out the names of the Thus Come One Shakyamuni and the Buddha Many Treasures, or fashion images of them, and place these on the left and right of the Lotus Sutra.

And those persons who were able to do so further should write the names of the Tathagata Shakyamuni and the Buddha Many Treasures or make the images of them, and they should place these on the left and right of the Lotus Sutra.

又たへたらんは十方の諸仏・普賢菩薩等をもつくりかきたてまつるべし、

And if they are further able to do so, they should fashion images or write out the names of the Buddhas of the ten directions and the bodhisattva Universal Worthy and the others.

And if they are further able to do so, they fashion images of the ten directions' Buddha and the bodhisattva Universal Worthy, and others, or should write their names.
