26. Nichiren Pray for Rain Hard 2

         Japanese edition


When defeat of Ryoukan became decisive, the third messenger, Hokibo Nikko came up and told it loudly in the background of the sunset.

“Disciple of the priest Nichiren, Hokibo Nikko expresses the message of the priest. Why is a backwind here without raining? The holy priest Ryoukan most superior in religious precepts achieved the doctrines of Lotus Sutra and Shingon and it is said that the mercy is the best. Why can you not bring rain during seven days while in command of several hundred believers? Think with this, can the person who does not jump over the fosse of a feet jump over the fosse of ten feet or 20 feet? You cannot bring even easy rain and the difficult rebirth and attaining of Buddhahood go without saying. Therefore, you must change a wicked intention to bear a grudge against priest Nichiren from now. If you feel your future life scary, come according to the promise in a hurry. I will teach you the Law to bring rain, and the way of becoming the Buddha”.

Ryoukan glared at Hokibo and groaned. According to there cord, it is said that he cries and bared his feelings.

It is not ordinary. He is a saint said to be living Buddha of Kamakura. Ryoukan have never received such the humiliation.

 However, Hokibo swears uncharitably.

“The drought is more terrible and the backwind blows more and more, grieving of people is deeper. Stop the prayer immediately!”.

Believers came to their senses, stop Nembutsu and looked up at Hokibo.

The voice of the grudge broke out. A sound of this resentment leaked to outside, and the crowd who looked at this scene ran away.

Nichiren writes down about the prayer for rain as follows in "Letter to Shimoyama" which he wrote at 56 years old in fifth year of Kenji era.


The Sutra of the world origin says; ‘various creatures become dissolute, and they pollute the practices of the cleanliness. Therefore, the Heaven does not give rain’. Also, it says, ‘there is the person who is not becoming for Law. Because he is greedy and is jealousy and has a wicked view and is mentally confused, the Heaven does not give rain. 'The Aspects of different between the Sutra and the Law’ says,Because there are five matters, there is not rain. I abbreviate one to three. The fourth point, it is because an exorcist of rain is lechery. As for the fifth, because the king does not rule the country with reason, an exorcist of rain gets angry. Therefore, it does not rain’. Please compare it with Ryoukan self in the clear mirror of these texts of a sutra. We see it clearly. The first point, it is said that he follows religious precepts at the surface, but is he not actually dissolute? The second point, is he not greedy? The third point, is not he jealous? The fourth, does not he have a wicked view? The fifth, is not he lechery? He does not surpass these five points. In addition, the object of this sutra is not limited to one Ryoukan. Consider old times and understand the present!”.


He said that prayer do not come true for a reason of dissoluteness, greed, jealousy, a wicked view and the lechery.

Ryoukan had lost beyond recognition. This moment, his fame has been gone.

Gosho 南条兵衛七郎御書 The Votary of the Lotus Sutra


 第四の巻に云く「(しか)(ko)の経は如来の現在すら(なお)(おん)(しつ)多し(いわん)(めつ)()の後をや」

The fourth volume of the sutra says, “Since hatred and jealousy toward this sutra abound even when the Thus Come One is in the world, how much more will this be so after his passing?”

The fourth volume of the Lotus Sutra teaches, “One who teaches the Lotus Sutra will be detested by others even during Shakyamuni’s lifetime. How much worse will be this after his passing! ”

The fourth volume of the Lotus Sutra teaches, 'Even the present of the Buddha still had much jealousy. To say nothing of after Buddha'.

第五の巻に云く「一切世間(あだ)多くして信じ(がた)し」等云云、

The fifth volume states, “It [the Lotus Sutra] will face much hostility in the world and be difficult to believe.”

The fifth volume of the Lotus Sutra states, “In this world, one will encounter much hostility; and it will be difficult to believe [in the Lotus Sutra].”

The fifth volume of the Lotus Sutra states, 'In this world, one will encounter much spitefulness; and it will be difficult to believe in the Lotus Sutra'.

日本国に法華経よみ学する人これ多し、

In Japan there are many who read and study the Lotus Sutra.

人の()ねら()ひ・ぬす()み等にて(うち)はらるる人は多けれども・法華経の故にあや()またるる人は一人もなし、

There are also many who are beaten in punishment for attempting to seduce other men’s wives or for theft or other offenses. Yet not one person has ever suffered injury on account of the Lotus Sutra.

There are many who are killed for chasing other men’s wives or breaking into houses and stealing. There is, however, not a single person who was almost killed for the sake of the Lotus Sutra.

されば日本国の持経者は・いまだ此の経文には()わせ給はず、

Therefore, upholders of the sutra in Japan are not yet worthy of these sutra passages.

(ただ)日蓮一人こそ()みはべれ、

I alone have read the sutra with my entire being.

Nichiren alone is reading the sutra with his very life.

我不愛身命(がふあいしんみょう)但惜(たんじゃく)無上(むじょう)(どう)是なり

This is the meaning of the passage that says, “We care nothing for our bodies or lives but are anxious only for the unsurpassed way”.

This is the meaning of a passage [in the Lotus Sutra] that states, “We do not hold our own lives dear but seek only the unsurpassed way.”

'I do not have an affection for my body or life but only cherish the crowning teachings'. It is this meaning.

されば日蓮は日本第一の法華経の行者なり。

I am therefore the foremost votary of the Lotus Sutra in Japan.
