16. Tokiyori Pardons Nichiren. (2)

           Japanese edition


The vassals of the visit went into the Shigetoki Hojo's house one after another on the next morning.

They speak under his breath in the waiting room.

“It is said that he fell down suddenly. It's hard to know in detail. Well, what is the name of his illness?”.

“It is a rumor called the cruel illness. The heat comes out suddenly and has a nightmare. Anyway, it is said that he had watched a monster in the restroom".

“Is a result with vast oblation to priest Ryoukan this?”.

“By the way, Lord Shigetoki just banished Nichiren of Buddhist priest to Izu last month. Is this not a terrible retribution?”.

The vassal put his finger on his lips.

"Sh! Your voice is loud".

By the way, although is secret, lord Tokiyori is illness, too. The lord of Kamakura may change.

A groan of Shigetoki occasionally sounded from the back room.

Shigetoki writhed in bed and suffered.

Lord Zhibu of the wife and Nagatoki of the child watch him with tears.

Shigetoki was called Gokurakuji in grandchildren of first regent, Tokimasa Hojo. Their whole families were named a Gokurakuji clan and were a second position from the head family among Hojo. That whole family was depressed.

It was certain that a condition of Shigetoki was serious.

Gokurakuji Ryoukan was not able to hide the uneasy face for misfortunes of strong supporter.

It was sudden tragedy. Atmosphere full of joy until just yesterday went away in an instant, and affliction has come over.

Gokurakuji Ryoukan put hands together in a side of Shigetoki who suffer. In a situation, he must peep at illness by prayer.

It was this time definitely. Shigetoki moved his hand from the blanket and grasped a hand of Ryoukan. That hands had been becoming the black color.

Women screamed.

Shigetoki groans.

“Priest Ryoukan, please help me! Even if you pray no matter how much, I do not improve. Why is it like this? There cannot be the person who valued Nembutsu greatly at elsewhere except me”.

“For Lord Shigetoki, this is a little more patience. There surely is protection of the Tathagata Amida in Lord Shigetoki of the wealthy supporter of Gokurakuji Temple.

Shigetoki grasps a hand of Ryoukan tightly.

Ryoukan frowned unintentionally and untied it by power.

Finally, Shigetoki looked suspiciously.

Shigetoki fixed its eyes on Ryoukan while groaning.

The voices of Nembutstu sounded without a break in this way in Shigetoki's mansion. A groan of Shigetoki was mixed together with that voice.

He was nearing his end.

Shigetoki raised the arm which became all black highly in bed, writhed with pain.

The family cries around.

Ryoukan chanted Nembutsu aloud together with dozens of disciples at the side.

The black hands which Shigetoki raised highly fell down to the bed slowly.

Nagatoki of the child cried.

“Dad!”.

The family clung to Shigetoki.

Ryoukan and disciples either gathered and stared an aspect of his death.

His face becomes black. Shigetoki twisted a neck, and died staring at Ryoukan.

It was a life of 63 years.

Disciples of Ryoukan were frightened. One of them mutters for grotesqueness of the aspect of death unintentionally.

“It is an aspect of the hell that becomes black after dead. It is said that the black color compares to a shadow of the hell”.

Ryoukan grasps the hand of a confused disciple and glares.

“Lord Shigetoki became Buddha. He had finished chanting Nembutsu and went to the Pure Land of paradise. Inform it was the quiet last. Be sure not to forget!".

For five months, Shigetoki who banished Nichiren to Izu exile which took Gokurakuji Ryokan's intentions into account had suffered from heat and chills since he fell down to the illness, and he left the world, November 3, 1261.

末法の本仏の立場で法華経一部二十八品を直弟子日興上人に口伝した書【御義口伝 上】要点解説(73)

【宝塔品二十箇の大事】


第七 於十方国土 有説法華経処 我之塔廟 為聴是経故 涌現其前 為作証明 讃言善哉の事

[上記和訳]
(若し我(多宝如来)成仏し滅度の後)十方の国土に於いて、法華経を説く処有らば、我が塔廟(注)は、是の経を聴かんが為の故に、其の前に湧現し、(法華経が真実であるとする)証明を為して、讃めて善い哉と言わん]


つまり上記の偈は、釈尊が法華経を説くに時、多宝如来は、法華経が真実の教えであることを証明する役割として娑婆世界に出現したことを示している。


 御義口伝に云く、十方とは十界なり。

法華経とは、我等衆生、流転の十二因縁(注)なり、仍て言語の音声を指すなり。善哉とは、善悪不二、邪正一如なり。

今、日蓮等の類い、南無妙法蓮華経と唱え奉る処を、多宝涌現と云うなり。

塔廟(とうびょう)

仏舎利・経典等を納めた塔。 日蓮大聖人が御図現なされた十界曼荼羅御本尊を安置した仏壇、厨子(ずし)は末法の塔廟と言えよう。

十二因縁

釈尊は初期の教え(後世漢訳された阿含経)で、人間が「苦」を感じ流転する十二の過程を次の様に説いた。「無明、行、識、名色、六処、触、受、愛、取、有、生、老死」


 しかしながら釈尊は晩年七十二歳にして、法華経の開教である「無量義経」で「四十余年未顕真実」と宣言し、その後八年間説いた法華経で「煩悩即菩提」と説き、煩悩(苦悩)を昇華することで菩提(悟り)が得られる事を明らかにした。


 これは例えば、火はものを焼く、暗闇を明るくする、周囲を暖めるという優れた効用を持っているが、原料はガス、灯油などそれ自体は毒のようなものである。しかしその毒は、点火することにより優れた作用を発揮することになる。

釈尊はこの「煩悩即菩提」を、泥中にありながら泥に染まらず、泥を養分として白い清浄な大輪の華を咲かせる「蓮華」を象徴として「妙法蓮華経」を解き明かした。


さらに末法に入り、日蓮大聖人は、自らが図現した十界曼荼羅の本尊に「南無妙法蓮華経」と唱えることで、煩悩即菩提を得ることができる「究極の修行方法」を確立し、末法の衆生のために立宗宣言を為し、鎌倉幕府からの度々の迫害に屈することなく、布教及び弟子信徒の教化を生涯貫き通すとともに、五百点以上もの書(御書)を、自ら滅後の衆生のために書き残された。
