Recorded Lectures

     弘安三年五月二十八日 五十九歳御作

     May28, 1280 (Age: 59)


(およ)そ法華経と申すは一切衆生(かい)成仏(じょうぶつ)(どう)の要法なり、

In conclusion, the Lotus Sutra is the essential Law that leads all living beings to enlightenment.

されば大覚世尊は(せつ)()未至(みし)()と説かせ給いて説く()き時節を待たせ給いき、

Thus, Shakyamuni Buddha awaited the right time to elucidate the Lotus Sutra by stating, “The time has not come to expound the Lotus Sutra”.

例せば郭公(かっこう)の春をおくり(にわ)(とり)(あかつき)を待ちて鳴くが如くなり、

For example, the little cuckoo calls at the beginning of spring, and a rooster crows with the arrival of dawn.

此れ(すなわ)ち時を待つ故なり、

This is because they wait for the right time.

されば涅槃(ねはん)経に云く「時を知るを持っての故に大法師(だいほっし)と名づく」と説かれたり、

For this reason, the Nirvana Sutra states, “He is called the great teacher, since he knows the time”.

(いま)末法は南無妙法蓮華経の七字を(ひろ)めて()(しょう)(とく)(やく)あるべき時なり、

Now is the time of the Latter Day of the Law, when one can attain Buddhahood by propagating the seven characters of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, and enables others to receive benefits [from the Buddha].

されば此の題目には余事(よじ)を交えば僻事(ひがごと)なるべし、

Thus, if one mixes the practice of chanting the Daimoku with other practices, it will be a deviation from the correct path.

此の妙法の大曼(だいまん)()()を身に(たも)ち、心に念じ、口に唱え(たてまつ)るべき時なり、

This is the time for one embrace this great mandala of Myoho-Renge-Kyo, engrave it in one’s heart, and chant the Daimoku aloud.

Gosho 曾谷入道等許御書 On the five Guides of Propagation 

大集(だいしつ)経の文を以て之を案ずるに、(さき)箇度(かど)の五百年は、仏の記文の如く(すで)符合(ふごう)せしめ(おわ)んぬ。

If we consider this passage in the light of that cited earlier from the Great Collection Sutra, we see that the situation in the first four five-hundred-year periods was just as the Buddha predicted it would be in the sutra.

When we consider these Five-hundred-year Periods based on the Sutra of the Great Assembly, we can see that what was predicted in the Sutra of the Great Assembly regarding the first four Five-hundred-year Periods actually has occurred.

第五の五百歳の一事豈唐捐(あにとうえん)ならん。

Why, then, should we suppose that his predictions concerning the fifth five-hundred-year period will turn out to be false or inapplicable?

How can the prediction of the fifth Five-hundred-year Period be wrong?

(したが)つて当世の(てい)(たらく)、大日本国と大(もう)()国と闘諍(とうじょう)合戦(かっせん)す。第五の五百に相当れるか。

And if they are not, then is the present struggle between the great kingdom of Japan and the great kingdom of the Mongols perhaps one of the things that is destined to take place in the fifth five-hundred-year period?

When we look at the present situation in the world, we see that the great country of Japan and the powerful Mongol Empire are at war. This shows that the present time corresponds to the fifth Five-hundred-year Period.

()の大集経の文を(もっ)()の法華経の文を(おも)うに、後五百歳中広宣流布・()(えん)()(だい)(ほう)(しょう)(あに)扶桑(ふそう)国に非ずや。

Again, if we consider this passage from the Lotus Sutra in the light of that from the Great Collection Sutra, the Buddha’s pronouncement “After I have passed into extinction, in the last five-hundred-year period you must spread it abroad widely throughout Jambudvīpa” refers to something that will take place here in our country of Japan, does it not?

When we interpret the words of the Lotus Sutra on the basis of the Sutra of the Great Assembly, we can see that the Buddha’s decree, “In the fifth Five-hundred-year Period after my passing, the Law should be propagated throughout the world” actually means that [the propagation of the Lotus Sutra will emanate from] Japan.
