Gosho 中興入道御消息 Letter to the Lay Priest Nakaoki 

過去の父母も()そとば(卒塔婆)の功徳によりて天の日月の(ごと)(じょう)()てら()し、

I believe that, because of the benefit derived from your erecting this wooden tablet, your deceased parents must be illuminating the path to the pure land as brilliantly as would the sun and moon in the heavens.

Just like sun and moon in the heavens, these benefits are shining on one’s deceased parents and ancestors in the pure land.

孝養の人(なら)びに妻子は現世には寿(いのち)を百二十年(たも)ちて()(しょう)には父母とともに霊山(りょうぜん)(じょう)()にまいり給はん事、

Furthermore, you yourselves, their filial son and his wife, as well as your children, will live to be 120 in this existence, and after death you will be with your parents in the pure land of Eagle Peak.

A filial individual [who erects a stupa], his wife, and their children will extend their lifespan to 120 years in this lifetime, and after death, they all will be together with their deceased parents in the pure land where the Buddha resides.

()めば月うつ()り、つ()みを()てばひび()きのあるがごとしとをぼしめし候へ等云云。

You should consider this to be as certain as the fact that the moon is reflected in clear water, or that a drum produces a sound when struck.

When the water is clear, the moon will be reflected on its surface. When a drum is beaten, the sound will resonate. You should consider the benefit of a stupa in this way.

此れより後後(のちのち)の御そとば(卒塔婆)にも法華経の題目を(あらわ)し給へ。

Should you erect any wooden tablets in the future, be sure to have the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra inscribed on them as well.

When you erect stupas in the future, they should bear the Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra.

Gosho 中興入道御消息 Letter to the Lay Priest Nakaoki


()ぬる(おさな)()のむ()御前(ごぜん)の十三年に丈六(じょうろく)そとば(卒塔婆)をたてて其の(おもて)に南無妙法蓮華経の七字を(あらわ)して・をはしませば、

Moreover, on the thirteenth anniversary of the death of your infant daughter, you erected a sixteen-foot wooden grave tablet with the seven characters Nam-myoho-renge-kyo inscribed on it.

On the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the death of your young daughter, you erected a stupa (toba) with an inscription of the seven characters of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo on its face.

北風吹けば南海の()()()の風にあたりて大海の苦をはな()

When the north wind blows, it is said, fish in the southern sea who are touched by it will be released from their sufferings;

When the wind blows from the north, the wind [that touches the Daimoku on the stupa] reaches the great ocean in the south and enables the fish there to escape the sufferings of the world of animality.

東風(こち)きたれば西山の(ちょう)鹿(ろく)・其の風を身に()れて畜生(ちくしょう)(どう)をまぬかれて都率(とそつ)の内院に生れん、

and when the wind comes from the east, birds and deer in the western mountains who come in contact with it will escape from the realm of animals and be born in the inner court of the Tushita heaven.

When the wind blows from the east, the wind [that touches the Daimoku on the stupa] reaches the mountains in the west where birds and deer live. They too, will be liberated from the life of animality, and will be reborn in the inner court of Tushita Heaven, where bodhisattvas dwell.

(いわん)や・かのそとば(卒塔婆)随喜(ずいき)をなし手を()れ眼に見まいらせ候人類(じんるい)をや。

How much greater still will be the blessings of those human beings who rejoice at this tablet, touch it with their hands, or gaze upon it with their eyes!

Needless to say, one who rejoices over the stupa, see it, or touches it [will receive immeasurable benefits].

Gosho 法華取要抄 Choosing the Heart of the Lotus Sutra

果位を以て(これ)を論ずれば諸仏如来(あるい)は十(こう)・百劫・千劫已来(いらい)の過去の仏なり、

Again, if we consider the question of how long it has been since these various Buddhas attained the fruit of Buddhahood, then we will find that there are some who became Buddhas ten kalpas ago, others a hundred kalpas or a thousand kalpas ago.

Judging from the results that various Buddhas and Tathagatas achieved through their practices, they are Buddhas who attained enlightenment ten, one hundred, or one thousand kalpas age.

教主釈尊は(すで)に五百(じん)(てん)(ごう)より已来妙覚(みょうかく)果満の仏なり

But in the case of Shakyamuni Buddha, the lord of teachings, it has already been a period of numberless major world system dust particle kalpas since he became a Buddha of perfect enlightenment and complete reward.

The Great Master Shakyamuni Buddha reached the final stage of enlightenment in the time of Five Hundred [myriad] Dust-particle Kalpas and was endowed with the virtue obtained through all his practices.

大日如来・阿弥陀(あみだ)如来・薬師(やくし)如来等の(じん)十方(じっぽう)の諸仏は我等が本師教主釈尊の所従等なり、

The Thus Come One Mahāvairochana, the Thus Come One Amida, the Thus Come One Medicine Master, and all the other Buddhas of the ten directions are followers of Shakyamuni, the lord of teachings and our original teacher.

天月の(ばん)(すい)に浮ぶ是なり、

He is like the moon in the sky that is reflected in ten thousand different bodies of water.

Gosho 観心本尊抄 The True Object of Worship 

迹門(しゃくもん)並びに(ぜん)四味(しみ)・無量義経・()(はん)経等の三説は悉く(ずい)他意(たい)()(しん)()()

The theoretical teaching, the first four flavors of teachings, the Immeasurable Meanings Sutra, and the Nirvana Sutra were all preached according to the capacities of the people. All these teachings that fall into the three categories of preaching are therefore easy to believe and easy to understand.

The theoretical teaching, as well as the three categories of sutras----the four inferior flavors, the Sutra of Infinite Meanings, and the Nirvana Sutra----all were expounded by the Buddha according to the capacity of the people, and are easy to believe and easy to understand.

本門は三説の(ほか)難信(なんしん)(なん)()(ずい)自意(じい)なり。

In contrast, the essential teaching, which transcends the three categories, is difficult to believe and difficult to understand, for it directly reveals the Buddha’s own enlightenment. Nevertheless, even the difference between the doctrine of three thousand realms in a single moment of life of the theoretical teaching and that of the essential teaching pales into insignificance [before the ultimate teaching contained in the depths of the “Life Span” chapter].

The essential teaching, on the other hand, is completely different from the three categories of sutras, and was expounded by the Buddha according to his own mind. Therefore, it is the most difficult to believe and the most difficult to understand.
