Devadatta was a man of incorrigible disbelief, the worst in the entire land of Jambudvīpa.

Devadatta was an icchantika, the worst in the entire world.

In all the earlier sutras preached during the lifetime of the Buddha, he was cast aside as hopeless. But he encountered the Lotus Sutra, and was granted a prediction that he would become a Buddha called the Thus Come One Heavenly King.

According to all of the earlier sutras preached during Shakyamuni’s lifetime, he was considered hopeless. But when the Buddha expounded the Lotus Sutra, he predicted that Devadatta ultimately would attain Buddhahood as the Heavenly King Tathagata.

彼を以て(これ)を推するに末代の悪人等の成仏・不成仏は罪の軽重(けいちょう)()らず(ただ)(この)経の信不信に(まか)す可きのみ。

Judging from these examples, we may conclude that for evil people living in the latter age the attainment of Buddhahood depends not upon whether their offenses are slight or grave, but solely upon whether or not they have faith in this sutra.

From these examples, it can be concluded that the attainment of enlightenment for evil people in the Latter Day of the Law does not depend on whether their offenses are light or heavy, but solely on whether or not they have faith in this sutra.

Nevertheless, when he came to the assembly where the Buddha was preaching the Nirvana Sutra and heard the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, not only did he recover from the sores that had broken out in his present existence [as a result of his evil deeds], but his life was prolonged by forty years; and even though he did not originally possess roots of faith, in the end he reached the first stage of security and was given the Buddha’s prediction that he would attain Buddhahood.

However, when he heard the teaching of the Lotus Sutra at the assembly where the Buddha expounded the Nirvana Sutra, his incurable boils were healed. Moreover, his life was prolonged by forty years. Furthermore, despite the fact that he originally lacked the roots of faith, he ultimately reached the first stage of stability, and Shakyamuni affirmed his attainment of Buddhahood.
