Attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime

The Lotus Sutra is the king of sutras, the direct path to enlightenment, for it explains that the entity of our life, which manifests either good or evil at each moment, is in fact the entity of the Mystic Law.

The Lotus Sutra is the king of all sutras and is the straight path to Buddhahood, since it teaches that both good and evil arise in a single life-moment of one’s mind, which itself is the true entity of Myoho-Renge-Kyo.

If you chant Myoho-renge-kyo with deep faith in this principle, you are certain to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime.

With profound belief in this, if one chants Myoho-Renge-Kyo, there is no doubt whatsoever about one’s attainment of Buddhahood in this lifetime.

That is why the sutra states, “After I have passed into extinction, [one] should accept and uphold this sutra. Such a person assuredly and without doubt will attain the Buddha way.”

Therefore, the sutra states;After my [Shakyamuni’s] passing, one must solely embrace this sutra. The path to attain Buddhahood for such a person is already determined, and there should be no doubt concerning this.”

Never doubt in the slightest.

Gosho 六難九易抄((妙法尼御前御返事) On the Six Difficult and Nine Easy Acts

The One essential Phrase

On the Six Difficultand Nine Easy Acts

           July 3, 1278(Age: 57)

The sutra teaches that women, evil men, and those in the realms of animals and hell—in fact, all the beings of the Ten Worlds—can attain Buddhahood intheir present form. [This is an incomparably greater wonder than] fire being produced by a stone taken from the bottom of a river, or a lantern lighting upa place that has been dark for a hundred, a thousand, or ten thousand years.

[The Lotus Sutra states that] evil people, women, those of the worlds of animality and hell----those of all the ten worlds----will be able to attain enlightenment. This is analogous to a rock taken from the bottom of a river possessing the ability to ignite a fire, or a lamp having the ability to illuminate a palace that has been dark for one hundred and ten million years.

If even the most ordinary things of this world are such wonders, then how much more wondrous is the power of the Buddhist Law!

Such mysterious phenomena are found even in trivial matters of society, not to mention the mystic power of the Law of Buddhism.

We ordinary beings are fettered by evil karma, earthly desires, and the sufferings of birth and death. But due to the three inherent potentials of the Buddha nature—innate Buddhahood, the wisdom to perceive it, and the actions to manifest it—we can without doubt reveal the Buddha’s three bodies—the Dharma body, the reward body, and the manifested body.

Our lives are fettered with evil karma, earthly desires, and the sufferings of life and death. We instantly, however, can manifest the three enlightened properties of the Law, wisdom, and compassionate action, due to the three inherent potentials----the innate Buddha nature, the wisdom to perceive the innate Buddha nature, and good causes and relations to develop the innate Buddha nature.

The Great Teacher Dengyō states, “Through the power of the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law they can do so in their present form.”

The Great Teacher Dengyō gave the following interpretation,One can attain enlightenment in one’s present form through the power of Myoho-Renge-Kyo.”

He is referring to the example of the dragon king’s daughter, who achieved Buddhahood in her reptilian form through the power of the Lotus Sutra.

 This means that the power of the Lotus Sutra enabled even the Dragon King’s Daughter to attain enlightenment without changing her present form.
