Gosho 開目抄 上 Opening of the Eyes

迹門(しゃくもん)方便品は一念三千・()(じょう)()(ぶつ)を説いて()(ぜん)二種の(とが)・一つを(のが)れたり、

The “Expedient Means” chapter, which belongs to the theoretical teaching, expounds the doctrine of three thousand realms in a single moment of life, making clear that persons of the two vehicles can achieve Buddhahood. It thus eliminates one of the two errors found in the earlier sutras.

The Expedient Means chapter of the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra avoids one of the two faults of the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings by revealing the doctrine of ichinensanzen and the attainment of Buddhahood by those of the two vehicles.

しかりと・いえども・いまだ発迹(ほっしゃく)(けん)(ぽん)せざれば・ま()との一念三千もあらはれず二乗作仏も定まらず、

But it nevertheless retains the provisional aspect, and fails to reveal the eternal aspect, of the Buddha’s enlightenment. Thus the true doctrine of three thousand realms in a single moment of life remains unclear, and the attainment of Buddhahood by persons of the two vehicles is not properly affirmed.

However, if discarding the provisional identity and revealing the true identity is not yet accomplished, true ichinen sanzen cannot be expounded, and the attainment of enlightenment of those of the two vehicles cannot be guaranteed.

水中の月を見るがごとし・根なし草の波の上に浮べるに()たり、

Such teachings are like the moon seen in the water, or rootless plants that drift on the waves.

It is like the reflection of the moon appearing on the water, or duckweed floating on the surface of the sea.

本門にいたりて()(じょう)正覚(しょうかく)をやぶれば四教の果をやぶる、

When we come to the essential teaching of the Lotus Sutra, then the belief that Shakyamuni first obtained Buddhahood during his present lifetime is demolished, and the effects of the four teachings are likewise demolished.

When the essential teaching of the Lotus Sutra refutes the belief that Shakyamuni Buddha first attained enlightenment in India, the effects from the practice of the four teachings of doctrine also are refuted.

四教の果をやぶれば四教の因やぶれぬ、

When the effects of the four teachings are demolished, the causes of the four teachings are likewise demolished.

Then, the causes based on the four teachings also are refuted.

爾前(にぜん)迹門の十界の因果を打ちやぶつて本門の十界の因果をとき顕す

Thus the cause and effect of the Ten Worlds as expounded in the earlier sutras and the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra are wiped out, and the cause and effect of the Ten Worlds in the essential teaching are revealed.

By refuting the cause and effect of the ten worlds taught in the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings and the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra, the cause and effect of the ten worlds of the essential teaching is revealed.
