The True Object of Worship 11

In his commentary Chi-tsang writes, “Sad is translated as perfect endowment.”

In Jizangs Annotations on the Meaning of the Lotus Sutra it states,” Sha is translated as complete”

The Great Teacher T`ien-t’ai remarks, “Sad is a Sanskrit word, which is translated as myo, or wonderful.”

The great Teacher Tiantai stated,Sha is a Sanskrit word, and is translated as the Chinese character `Myo`.

If I add my own interpretation,
it will be as if I had profaned these passages,

 Compared to their interpretations, mine may be insufficient.

but inessence they mean that Shakyamuni’s practices and the virtues he consequently attained are all contained within the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo.

However, the true meaning of these passages is as follows: The practices that Shakyamuni carried out and the virtues he consequently acquired are all contained in the five characters of Myoho-Renge-Kyo.

If we believe in these five characters, we will naturally be granted the same benefits as he was.

If we embrace these characters, the same virtues that Shakyamuni gained will naturally be bestowed upon us.

The True Object of Worship 3

 When we look from time to time at a person’s face, we find him or her sometimes joyful, sometimes enraged, and sometimes calm. At times greed appears in the person’s face, at times foolishness, and at times perversity.
 When we look at a person’s face, at times he appears joyful, enraged, or calm. At other times, we may see the appearance of greed, foolishness, or flattery.

 Rage is the world of hell, greed is that of hungry spirits, foolishness is that of animals, perversity is that of asuras, joy is that of heaven, and calmness is that of human beings.
 Rage is a manifestation of the world of hell, greed is a manifestation of the world of hunger, stupidity is a manifestation of the world of animality, fawning is a manifestation of the world of anger, calmness is a manifestation of the world of humanity, and joy is a manifestation of the world of rapture.

 These worlds, the six paths, are all present in the physical appearance of the person’s face.

 The remaining four noble worlds are hidden and dormant and do not appear in the face, but if we search carefully, we can tell that they are there.

On securing the Peace of the Land through the Propagation of True Buddhism end

 From now on, with your kind instruction to guide me, I wish to continue dispelling the ignorance from my mind.
 From now on, I will faithfully uphold your compassionate admonition so that I may clear my foolish and deluded mind.

 I hope we may set about as quickly as possible taking measures to deal with these slanders against the Law and to bring peace to the world without delay, thus insuring that we may live in safety in this life and enjoy good fortune in the life to come.
 I will immediately eliminate [ all slanderous teachings ] and make every effort toward realizing the peace throughout the land. These efforts will also secure my own peace of mind in this lifetime and will enable me to attain supreme happiness in future existences.

 But it is not enough that I alone should accept and have faith in your words—we must see to it that others as well are warned of their errors!
 Not only will I take faith in the correct Law, but I will also refute erroneous views of others !

On securing the Peace of the Land through the Propagation of True Buddhism 12

Therefore, you must quickly reform the tenets that you hold in your heart and embrace the one true vehicle, the single good doctrine .
You must immediately renounce your erroneous belief and take faith in the supreme teaching of the one vehicle of the Lotus Sutra.

If you do so, then the three fold world will become the Buddha land, and how could a Buddha land ever decline?
Then, this entire threefold world will become the Buddha land. How could the Buddha land ever decline?

The regions in the ten directions will all become treasure realms, and how could a treasure realm ever suffer harm?
All the lands in the ten directions will transform into treasure realms. How could a treasure realm ever fall to ruin?

If you live in a country that knows no decline or diminution, in a land that suffers no harm or disruption, then your body will find peace and security, and your mind will be calm and untroubled.
If the nation never declines and the land is indestructible, you will find safety and peace of mind.

You must believe my words; heed what I say !
These are the very words that you must believe and revere.

On securing the Peace of the Land through the Propagation of True Buddhism 11

 Emperors and kings have their foundation in the state and bring peace and order to the age;
 The emperor rules the nation by keeping his kingdom in order,

 ministers and commoners hold possession of their fields and gardens and supply the needs of the world.
 while his subjects make their living by tending their farms and fields.

 But if marauders come from other regions to invade the nation, or if revolt breaks out within the domain and people’s lands are seized and plundered, how can there be anything but terror and confusion?
 If marauders invade from other countries or revolt occurs from within, and the people's lands are pillaged, will they not be shocked? Will they not panic?

 If the nation is destroyed and people’s homes are wiped out, then where can one flee for safety?
 If the nation is conquered and homes are lost, where will you flee?

 If you care anything about your personal security, you should first of all pray for order and tranquillity throughout the four quarters of the land, should you not ?
 If you truly desire your own peace and security, should you not first pray for peace of the entire nation.?

On securing the Peace of the Land through the Propagation of True Buddhism 10

 How gratifying ! You have associated with a friend in the orchid room and have become as straight as mugwort growing among hemp.
 I am delighted to see that you have corrected your views by conversing with a friend of virtue in the orchid room, just as [ the winding ] mugwort grows straight in a hemp field.

 A
lthough at this moment you may say you believe in my words, I fear that later you will forget them completely.
 You believe in my words at this moment; however, later you will surely forget them.

 Now if we wish first of all to bring security to the nation and to pray for our present and future lives, then we must hasten to examine and consider the situation and take measures as soon as possible to remedy it.
 If you desire a secure land, and wish to prey for peace in your present and future existence, you should waste no time, ponder on the correct path, and immediately eliminate slanders.

 Why do I say this?
 Why is this so?

 Because,of the seven types of disasters described in the Medicine Master Sutra, five have already occurred. Only two have yet to appear, the calamity of invasion from foreign lands and the calamity of revolt within one’s own domain.
 It is because five of the seven disasters described in the Sutra of Medicine Master have already befallen, and the other two have yet to occur---the disaster of foreign invasion and the disaster of revolt from within.

On securing the Peace of the Land through the Propagation of True Buddhism 9

 There can be no doubt that all people, from the ruler on down to the general populace, rejoice in and desire the stability of the nation and the peace of the world.
 Ultimately, it is the peace and stability of the land that everyone from the emperor to the commoner seeks and longs for.

 If we can quickly put an end to the alms that are given to these icchantikas and insure that continuing support is instead given to the host of true priests and nuns, if we can still these “white waves” that trouble the ocean of the Buddha and cut down these “green groves” that overgrow the mountain of the Law, then the world may become as peaceful as it was in the golden ages of Fu Hsi and Shen Nung, and the nation may flourish as it did under the sage rulers Yao and Shun.
 If we instantly cease giving alms to the icchantika and instead consistently make offerings to the many priests and nuns of the correct Law, and if we defeat the pirates on the vast ocean of Buddhist teachings and rout out the bandits in the high mountains of the Law, then the land will be peaceful, just as it was during the eras of Fu Xi and Shennong, and the nation will be an ideal one, just as it was during the periods of Yao and Shun.
