仏になる道は、必ず身命をすつるほどの事ありてこそ仏にはなり候らめ、と説いた【佐渡御勘気抄】

【佐渡御勘気抄】
■出筆時期:文永八年(西暦1271年)十月初旬 五十歳 御作。
■出筆場所:相模依智、本間重連の屋敷て。
■出筆の経緯:本書述作の前月、九月十二日に日蓮大聖人は竜の口で処刑されるという生涯最大の難に遭われている。光り物(巨大な隕石と思われる)の出現で処刑できなかった結果、大聖人は一ヶ月ほど相模依智の本間重連(佐渡守護代)の屋敷に預かりの身となる。
本書は佐渡に出立した十月十日の直前に、幼少時代に修行した清澄寺の兄弟子、浄顕房・義浄房に、佐渡流罪となり、十月十日に佐渡に向け出立することを伝えたご消息文となります。大聖人は浄顕房・義浄房に「身命をすつるほどの事ありてこそ仏にはなり候らめ」と説き、さらに「法華経の御故に捨てまいらせん事、あに石に金をかふるにあらずや。各各なげかせ給うべからず」と諭しておられる。

 九月十二日に御勘気を蒙て、今年十月十日佐渡の国へまかり候なり。本より学文し候し事は、仏教をきはめて仏になり、恩ある人をもたすけんと思ふ。仏になる道は、必ず身命をすつるほどの事ありてこそ仏にはなり候らめと、をしはからる。既に経文のごとく悪口・罵詈・刀杖・瓦礫・数数見擯出と説かれてかかるめに値い候こそ、法華経をよむにて候らめと、いよいよ信心もおこり後生もたのもしく候。

 死して候はば、必ず各各をもたすけたてまつるべし。天竺に師子尊者と申せし人は檀弥羅王に頚をはねられ提婆菩薩は外道につきころさる。漢土に竺の道生と申せし人は、蘇山と申す所へながさる。法道三蔵は面にかなやきをやかれて江南と申す所へながされき。是れ皆法華経のとく仏法のゆへなり。

日蓮は日本国・東夷・東条・安房の国・海辺の旃陀羅が子なり。いたづらにく(朽)ちん身を、法華経の御故に捨てまいらせん事、あに石に金をかふるにあらずや各各なげかせ給うべからず。道善の御房にもかう申しきかせまいらせ給うべし。領家の尼御前へも御ふみと存じ候へども、先かかる身のふみなればなつかしやと・おぼさざるらんと申しぬると、便宜あらば各各御物語り申させ給い候へ。

Gosho 観心本尊抄六 The True Object of Worship 22

 伝教大師日本にして末法の始を記して云く「代を語れば像の終り、末の(はじめ)

 The Great Teacher Dengyō, who was living in Japan, foresaw the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law, saying: “Speaking of the age, in the age when the Middle Day of the Law ends and the Latter Day opens.

 The Great Teacher Dengyou, in Japan, foresaw the beginning of the latter day of the Law, saying: 'If saying times, the end of the middle days of the Law and the beginning of the latter day.

 地を(たずぬ)れば唐の東・(けつ)の西、

 Regarding the land, it will begin in a land to the east of T’ang and to the west of Katsu.

 Regarding the land, it will be the east of Tang and the west of Katsu.

 人を(たずぬ)れば則ち五濁の生・闘諍の時なり

 As for the people, it will spread among people stained by the five impurities who live in a time of conflict.

 As for the person, he will be born from the five turbidities in the times of struggle'.

 経に云く猶多(ゆた)怨嫉(おんしつ)況滅(きょうめつ)度後(どご)と此の言(まこ)とに(ゆえ)有るなり」

 The sutra says, ‘Since hatred and jealousy toward this sutra abound even when the Thus Come One is in the world, how much more will this be so after his passing?’. There is good reason for this statement”.

 The sutra says, ‘Hatred and jealousy toward this sutra abound even when the Tathagata is in the world, why may there be fewer than this after his death? This explanation is to the point really'.

 此の釈に闘諍の時と云云、今の自界(じかい)叛逆(ほんぎゃく)・西海侵逼(しんぴつ)の二難を指すなり

 “A time of conflict” in this commentary refers to the two disasters of internal strife and invasion from the western sea that are occurring at present.

 ‘The times of struggle' of this commentary. It refers to the two disasters that are occurring at present,the internal strife and the invasion from the western sea.

 此の時地涌(じゆ)千界出現して本門の釈尊を脇士(きょうじ)と為す一閻(いちえん)浮提(ぶだい)第一の本尊此の国に立つ可し

 At this time the countless Bodhisattvas of the Earth will appear and establish in this country the Gohonzon, foremost in Jambudvīpa, that depicts Shakyamuni Buddha of the essential teaching .  

At that time, the Bodhisattva of the Earth will emerge.Then, he will establish the supreme object of worship for the entire world in this country, with Shakyamuni of the essential teaching playing a subordinate role.


 At this time the countless bodhisattvas will appear from the ground, and the Gohonzon, the holiest in the world, will be erected in this country with the essential Shakyamuni Buddha playing a subordinate role”.

(がっ)()(しん)(たん)(いま)だ此の本尊(ましま)さず

 This Gohonzon has never appeared in India or China.
 This Gohonzon has never before been in existence, either in India or China.

天晴れぬれば地明かなり

 When the skies are clear, the ground is illuminated.

 法華を()る者は世法を得可きか


 Similarly, when one knows the Lotus Sutra, one understands the meaning of all worldly affairs.

Gosho 観心本尊抄 The True Object of Worship

 問うて曰く仏の記文は云何

 Question: Does the Buddha predict their coming in the Latter Day of the Law?

 Question: Is there the prediction of Buddha?

 答えて曰く「()の五百歳、閻浮提(えんぶだい)に於て広宣流布せん」と

 Answer: The Buddha states, “In the last five-hundred-year period the Lotus Sutra will Kosen Ruhu [spread abroad widely throughout Jambudvīpa.]”

 Answer: The Buddha states, ‘In the latter five-hundred-year period this will spread widely throughout the whole world, Jambudvipa'.

 天台大師記して云く「後の五百歳遠く妙道に(うる)おわん」

 The Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai predicts, “In the last five-hundred-year period, the mystic way will spread and benefit human kind far into the future.”

 The Great Teacher Tientai predicts, ‘In the latter five-hundred-year period, the world will flourish by the marvelous Law for long'.

 妙楽記して云く「末法の(はじめ)冥利無きにあらず」

 Miao-lo predicts, “The beginning of the Latter Day of the Law will not be without inconspicuous benefit.”

 Miaolo predicts, ‘The profit received from sowing the seed of Buddhahood is absolutely at the beginning of the latter days of the Law'.

 伝教大師云く「正像(やや)過ぎ已つて末法(はなは)だ近きに有り」等云云

 The Great Teacher Dengyō says, “The Former and Middle Days are almost over, and the Latter Day is near at hand.”

 The Great Teacher Dengyou says, 'The former days and middle days of the Law are almost over, and the latter days are near at hand'.

 末法太有近の釈は我が時は正時に非ずと云う意なり

 The latter part of this quotation means that his was not the right time for propagation.
 ‘The latter day of the Law is near at hand', this quotation means that his times were not becoming the times of propagation.

Gosho 観心本尊抄 The True Object of Worship 1


「夫れ一心に十法界を具す

“Life at each moment is endowed with the Ten Worlds.

一法界に又十法界を具すれば百法界なり

At the same time, each of the Ten Worlds is endowed with all Ten Worlds, so that an entity of life actually possesses one hundred worlds.

一界に三十種の世間を具すれば百法界に即三千種の世間を具す

Each of these worlds in turn possesses thirty realms, which means that in the one hundred worlds there are three thousand realms.

此の三千・一念の心に在り

The three thousand realms of existence are all possessed by life in a single moment.

若し心(なく)んば而已(やみなん)()()も心有れば即ち三千を具す

If there is no life, that is the end of the matter. But if there is the slightest bit of life, it contains all the three thousand realms.

乃至所以(ゆえ)に称して不可思議境と為す(こころ)此に在り」等云云

. . . . This is what we mean when we speak of the ‘region of the unfathomable.’”

Gosho 開目抄 Opening of the Eyes

我が父母を人の殺さんに父母につげざるべしや

 If someone is about to kill your father and mother, shouldn’t you try to warn them?

悪子の酔狂(すいきょう)して父母を殺すをせいせざるべしや

 If a bad son who is insane with drink is threatening to kill his father and mother, shouldn’t you try to stop him?

悪人・寺塔に火を放たんにせいせざるべしや

 If some evil person is about to set fire to the temples and pagodas, shouldn’t you try to stop him?

 一子の重病を(やいと)せざるべしや

 If your only child is gravely ill, shouldn’t you try to cure him or her with moxibustion treatment?

 日本の禅と念仏者とを・みて制せざる者は・かくのごとし「()()くして(いつわ)り親しむは即ち是れ彼が(あだ)なり」等云云。


 To fail to do so is to act like those people who see but do not try to put a stop to the Zen and Nembutsu followers in Japan. “If one befriends another person but lacks the mercy to correct him, one is in fact his enemy.”

 日蓮は日本国の諸人にしうし父母なり

 I, Nichiren, am sovereign, teacher, and father and mother to all the people of Japan.


 I, Nichiren, am sovereign ,teacher, father, and mother to all people in Japan.


 天台の云く「適時(ちゃくじ)而已(にい)」等云云

 T’ien-t’ai has said that “the method chosen should be that which accords with the time.”

 仏法は時によるべし

 The propagation of the Buddhist teachings should follow the time.

 日蓮が流罪(るざい)は今生の小苦なれば・なげかしからず

 For what I have done, I have been condemned to exile, but it is a small suffering to undergo in this present life and not one worth lamenting.

 後生には大楽を・うくべければ大に悦ばし

 In future lives I will enjoy immense happiness, a thought that gives me great joy.

Gosho 開目抄 Opening of the Eyes

不求(ふぐ)解脱(げだつ)・解脱自至(じし)等と云云。

 “Although they do not seek emancipation,emancipation will come of itself.”

 我並びに我が弟子・諸難ありとも疑う心なくば自然(じねん)に仏界にいたるべし、

 Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbor doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood.

 Although I, Nichiren, and my disciples may face various difficulties, we will naturally reach the world of Buddhahood, as long as we do not harbor doubts.

 Although I and my disciples may encounter various persecution, we will reach the world of Buddha in accordance with nature, as long as we will not doubt in mind.
 天の加護なき事を疑はざれ、

 Do not have doubts simply because heaven does not lend you protection.

 Do not doubt that the heavens will protect you.

 Do not doubt even if the heavens do not protect you.

 現世の安穏ならざる事をなげかざれ、

 Do not be discouraged because you do not enjoy an easy and secure existence in this life.

 Do not be discouraged because your life is not easy and secure in this lifetime.

 Do not be discouraged even if you are not peace now.

 我が弟子に朝夕教えしかども・疑いを・をこして皆すてけん、

 This is what I have taught my disciples morning and evening, and yet they begin to harbor doubts and abandon their faith.

 Though I have taught this to my disciples day and night, many of them, raising doubts, abandon their faith.


 Though I have taught this to my disciple day and night, all of them raise doubts, had abandoned their faiths.


 つたなき者のならひは約束せし事を・まことの時はわするるなるべし。

 Foolish men are likely to forget the promises they have made when the crucial moment comes.

 Those with weak faith always forget what they have promised when the crucial moment comes.
 Foolish people forget what they have promised when the crucial moment had come.

Gosho 開目抄 下 Opening of the Eyes. Part Two.

(せん)ずるところは天もすて給え諸難にもあえ

This I will state. Let the gods forsake me. Let all persecutions assail me.

 身命を()とせん

Still I will give my life for the sake of the Law.

身子が六十劫の菩薩の行を退せし、乞眼の()羅門(らもん)(せめ)を堪えざるゆへ

Shāriputra practiced the way of the bodhisattva for sixty kalpas, but he abandoned the way because he could not endure the ordeal of the Brahman who begged for his eye.

久遠(くおん)大通の者の三五の塵をふる、悪知識に値うゆへなり

Of those who received the seeds of Buddhahood in the remote past and those who did so from the sons of the Buddha Great Universal Wisdom Excellence, many abandoned the seeds and suffered in hell for the long periods of numberless major world system dust particle kalpas and major world system dust particle kalpas, respectively, because they followed evil companions.

 善に付け悪につけ法華経をすつるは地獄の(ごう)なるべし

 Whether tempted by good or threatened by evil, if one casts aside the Lotus Sutra, one destines oneself for hell.

Gosho 開目抄 Opening of the Eyes

「諸の善男子・(おのおの)(あきら)かに思惟(しゅい)せよ此れは()れ難事なり
All you good men, each of you must consider carefully! Thisis a difficult matter—

(よろ)しく大願を()こすべし

it is proper you should make a great vow.

諸余の経典の数・恒沙(ごうしゃ)の如し、此等を説くと(いえど)も未だ()(かた)しとするに足らず

The other sutras number as many as Ganges sands, but though you expound those sutras,that is not worth regarding as difficult.

若し(しゅ)()()つて他方無数の仏土に()げ置かんも(また)未だ為れ難しとせず

If you were to seize Mount Sumeru and fling it far off to the measureless Buddha lands, that too would not bedifficult. . . .

若し仏滅後・悪世の中に(おい)()く此の経を説かん、是則ち為れ難し

But if after the Buddha has entered extinction, in the time of evil, you can preach this sutra, that will be difficult indeed! . . .

仮使(たとい)(こう)(しょう)に乾れたる草を(にな)い負うて中に入つて焼けざらんも(また)未だ為れ難しとせず

If, when the fires come at the end of the kalpa,one can load dry grass on his back and enter the fire without being burned,that would not be difficult.

我が滅度の後に若し此の経を持ちて一人の為にも説かん、是則ち()(かた)

But after I have passed into extinction if one can embrace this sutra and expound it to even one person, that will be difficult indeed! . . .

諸の善男子・我が滅後に(おい)て誰か能く此の経を護持し読誦(どくじゅ)せん

All you goodmen, after I have entered extinction, who can accept and uphold, read and recite this sutra?

今仏前に於て自ら誓言を説け」等云云

Now in the presence of the Buddha let him come forward and speak his vow!”
