A  

a bamboo container of sake 酒一筒

a horse load of salt 塩一駄

A man will die for a shame, a woman will die for a man. 男ははじ(恥)に命をすて、女人は男の為に命をす(捨)つ。

"A person who can accept and uphold this sutra is likewise foremost among all living beings." 「能く是の経典を受持する者有れば亦復(またまた)是くの如し。一切衆生の中に於て亦為(こ)れ第一なり」

"A plant, a tree, a pebble, a speck of dust - each has the Buddha nature, and each is endowed with cause and effect and with the function to manifest and the wisdom to realize its Buddha nature." (Myoraku) 「一草・一木・一礫(りゃく)・一塵(じん)、各(おのおの)一仏性・各一因果あり縁了を具足す」(妙楽)

About this doctrine, you must examine the principles that I am here expounding, and from now on, clarify its meaning. 此の法門は理を案じて義をつまびらかにせよ。

"This person will determine to attain Buddhahood and be never has doubt about it.” (chapter of Supernatural Power of Tathagata) 「是の人仏道に於て 決定して疑(うたがい)有る事無けん」(神力品)


"After I have passed, in the last five-hundred-year period you must spread it abroad widely throughout the whole world and never allow it to be cut off." 「我が滅度の後、後五百歳の中に広宣流布し閻浮提(えんぶだい)に於て断絶せしむること無けん」


age of attaining liberation 解脱堅固

age of meditation 禅定堅固

age of reading, reciting, and listening 読誦多聞堅固

age of building temples and stupas 多造塔寺堅固

age of when quarrels and disputes prevail 闘諍堅固

All Buddhas of the three existences, too, had attained Buddhahood by virtue of the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo. されば三世の諸仏も妙法蓮華経の五字を以て仏になり給ひしなり。

"All assertions that lack scriptural proof are to be branded as false; they are the same as the views of non-Buddhists. " 「文証無きは悉(ことごと)く是邪義にして彼の外道に同じ」

"All bodhisattvas have learned them in the past, all bodhisattvas will learn them in the future, and all bodhisattvas are learning them at present." 「一切の菩薩は已に学し、一切の菩薩は当に学し、一切の菩薩は今学す」


Although all the other trees may shed their leaves, the pine and cypress retrain their green, 諸木は枯るゝと雖も松柏(しょうはく)は萎(しぼ)まず

and although the other plants may wither, the bamboo remains unchanged. 衆草は散ると雖も掬竹(きくちく)は変ぜず

And the Lotus Sutra is like these. 法華経も亦復是くの如し


Although one does not at first have an understanding mind, the fact that one can listen to this Lotus Sutra and not slander it is a result of the great good acts done in the past. たとひ先に解信(げしん)無くとも此の法華経を聞いて謗ぜざるは大善の所生なり


"All is impermanence." 「諸行無常」

"This is the law of birth and death." 「是生滅法」

"Must annihilate the perception of birth and death." 「寂滅滅己」

"Enjoy a quite nirvana." 「寂滅為楽」


All of them will see me 則皆見我身

all phenomena are the mind  一切法是心


"All you good men,each of you must consider carefully." 「諸の善男子、各諦 (あきら) かに思惟せよ」

"This is a difficult matter." 「此は為 (こ) れ難事なり」

"Should make a great vow." 「宜しく大願を発 (お) こすべし」


"Among the sutras I have preached past, now preach present, and will preach future, this Lotus Sutra is the most difficult to believe and the most difficult to understand" 「我が所説の経典、無量千万憶にして、已に説き、今説き、当に説かん。而も其の中に於て、此の法華経、最も為(こ)れ難信難解(なんしんなんげ)なり」

An attaining Buddhahood of plants pertains to creatures without heart.  草木成仏とは非情の成仏なり。

"As the light of the sun and moon can banish various glom, this person will practice asceticism in this world and perish the darkness of all people." 「日月の光明の能く諸の幽冥(ゆうみょう)を除くが如く、斯(こ)の人世間に行じて能く衆生の闇を滅す」

Asvaghosa 馬鳴

"Assembly on Spirit Eagle Mountain which continues in solemn state and has not yet disbanded." 「霊山一会 儼然未散」 

"At all times I think it myself." 「毎自作是念」

"At that time, I and the assembly of monks appear together on Spirit Eagle Mountain." 「時我及衆僧 倶出霊鷲山」

Because the spirits become rampant, all the people of the nation become disordered 鬼神乱るるが故に万民乱る

"Because it [the Lotus Sutra] can cure what is thought to be incurable, it is called myo, or wonderful." 「治し難きを能く治す、所以(ゆえ)に妙と称す」


Because the Buddha adjusted himself to the minds of all living beings, the other sutras are preaching in accordance with the minds o others. 諸経は随他意なり、仏・一切衆生の心に従ひ給ふ故に。

However, the Lotus Sutra is a teaching in accordance with the Buddha's mind, because it made all people follow the Buddha's mind. 法華経は随自意なり、一切衆生を仏の心に随へたり。


"Because the poison has penetrated deeply and their minds no longer function as before." 「毒気深入 失本心故」

belief means to be without doubt 無疑曰信 むぎわっしん

"Belief means to be without doubt; understanding means to have a clear perception of the matter." 「疑い無きを信と曰い、明了なるを解と曰ふ」

"The Buddha said to the demon daughters, 'Excellent, excellent! If you can shield and guard those who accept and uphold the name of the Lotus Sutra, your good fortune will be immeasurable!'" 「仏諸の羅刹女(らせつにょ)に告げたまはく、善きかな善きかな、汝等但能く法華の名を受持する者を擁護(おうご)せん福量(はか)るべからず」


The Buddha taught that persons who read and uphold the Lotus Sutra in accordance with its teachings will invariably be hated by these three types of enemies. 法華経を説の如くよみ持たん人は必ず三類の敵人に怨まるべきなりと仏説き給へり。

Buddhahood inherent in one’s own mind 己心の仏界


"Buddhism came first from the west, like the moon appearing." 「始め西より伝ふ猶(なお)月の生ずるが如し」
"Now it has returned from the east, like the sun rising." 「今復東より返る猶(なお)日の昇るがごとし」

The character myo, like flowers that become fruit and the half moon that waxes full, is one that changes into a Buddha. 妙の文字は花のこのみとなるがごとく、半月の満月となるがごとく、変じて仏とならせ給ふ文字なり。


"The character myo, or wonderful, means that which is beyond ordinary comprehension, beyond the power of words to describe, beyond the scope of the mind to imagine."  「妙とは不可思議・言語道断・心行所滅なり」

"Ho, or Law, means the doctrine of the Ten Worlds and the ten factors, of the oneness of cause and effect." 「法とは十界十如・因果不二の法なり」

Even if one does not reject the Lotus Sutra, if one praises the sutras that preceded it, one is in effect slandering the Lotus Sutra. たとひ法華経を破せざれども、爾前の経々をほむるは法華経をそしるに当たれり。

Myoraku says, "If we praise the past, is that not a slander of the present?" 妙楽云はく「若し昔を称歎(しょうたん)せば豈(あに)今を毀(そし)るに非ずや」文。


"Even if one reviles the correct teaching and falls into the evil paths, one can create causes for the eventual attainment of benefit." 「謗に因って悪に墮つは、必ず因って益を得」

Even embracing the Lotus Sutra would be no use without the bloodline of faith. 信心の血脈なくんば法華経を持(たも)つとも無益なり。


Even in the heaven where there is neither thought nor no thought, where life lasts eighty thousand years, no one escapes the law of mutability, 非想の八万歳未だ無常を免れず

and in the heaven of thirty-three gods, too, where life lasts a thousand years, it is swept away at last by the winds of decline. 忉利(とうり)の一千年も猶退没(たいもつ)の風に破らる


Even someone like Zenmui who declared that the Lotus Sutra and the Dainichi Sutra are the same principle could not escape the censure of Yama. 理同と申す人いまだ閻魔のせめ(責)を脱れず。

How then can someone who says that the Kegon Sutra is inferior to the Dainichi Sutra and that the Lotus Sutra is in turn inferior to the Kegon Sutra, escape the charge of slandering the correct teaching? 大日経に劣る、華厳経に猶劣ると申す人・謗法を脱るべしや。

Foolish people forget what they have promised when the crucial moment has come. つたなき者のならひは、約束せし事をまことの時はわするるなるべし


For among all illnesses, the gravest illness is that of slandering the Lotus Sutra. 諸病の中には法華経を謗ずるが第一の重病なり。

And among all medicines, the finest medicine is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. 諸薬の中に南無妙法蓮華経は第一の良薬なり。


For Bodhisattvas as the Object of Devotion 四菩薩造立抄

For me it took twenty-seven years 余は二十七年なり


For persons who do not have faith in the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha has passed away. 法華経を信ぜざる人の前には釈迦牟尼仏入滅を取り、

But for those who put faith in the sutra, although Shakyamuni Buddha may seem to have passed away, he is still present in the world. 此の経を信ずる者の前には滅後たりと雖も仏の在世なり


For the spread of Buddhism, one must choose either the method of shoju or shakubuku, depending on the times. 仏法は摂受・折伏時によるべし。
These are analogous to the two worldly ways of a pen and a sword. 譬へば世間の文武二道の如し。

Four Debts of Gratitude 四恩抄


Four debts of gratitude of Buddhism 仏法の四恩

1) debt of gratitude to be paid to one’s father and mother 父母の恩を報ぜよ

2) debt of gratitude to be paid to the ruler of the nation 国主の恩を報ぜよ

3) debt of gratitude to be paid to all living beings 一切衆生の恩を報ぜよ

4) debt of gratitude to be paid to the three treasures [the Buddha, the Law, and the monk] 三宝の恩を報ぜよ

Four points regarding the entrustment of the Supernatural Power  神力品の四要

3) "the storehouse of all the secret essentials of the Tathagata," 「如来の一切の秘要の蔵 、」

4) "all the most profound matters of the Tathagata," 「如来の一切の甚深の事、」

 "all these are proclaimed, revealed, and clearly expounded in this sutra." 「皆此の経に於て宣示顕説す。」


Four virtues 四徳

1) filial piety toward one’s father and mother 父母に孝あるべし

2) loyalty to one’s lord 主に忠あるべし

3) courtesy toward one’s friends 友に合 (あ) うて礼あるべし

4) pity and kindness toward those less fortunate than oneself 劣れるに逢うて慈悲あれ


Four ways of preaching 四悉檀


Fourteen slander 十四誹謗

1) arrogance 驕慢

3) egotistical judgement, or arbitrary 計我

4) shallow understand, self-satisfied 浅識

5) attachment to desire 著欲

6) lack of understanding, or without a seeking spirit 不解

From the fury of the rain, we can judge the greatness of the dragon that caused it to fall; from the size of the lotus flower, we can tell the depth of the pond that produced it. 雨の猛 (たけ) きを見て竜の大なる事を知り、華の大なるを見て池のふかきことはしんぬべし
