Those of "having faith without knowledge" may lack knowledge but have faith and can attain Buddhahood.　有信無解とて解(げ)はなくとも信心あるものは成仏すべし。

I had been determined all along that, if after three attempts to warn the rulers of the nation my advice still went unheeded, I would leave the country.　本よりご(期)せし事なれば、三度国をいさ(諫)めんにもちゐずば国をさ(去)るべしと。

I have no words to thank you.　申すばかりなし

I, Nichiren, have dyed and written my soul in sumi ink. Please believe this.　日蓮がたましひ(魂)をすみ(墨)にそめながしてかきて候ぞ。信じさせ給へ。

The Buddha's holy will is the Lotus Sutra, but the soul of Nichiren is nothing other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.　仏の御意(みこころ)は法華経なり。日蓮がたましひは南無妙法蓮華経にすぎたるはなし。

Myoraku states that "The life of the Buddha originates from his immeasurable life span."　妙楽云はく「顕本遠寿を以て其の命と為す」と釈し給ふ。

I, Nichiren, would like to say this. The Lotus Sutra is linked to the seeds of Buddhahood inherent in the beings of each of the Ten Worlds.　日蓮云はく、此の経は是(これ)十界の仏種に通ず。

But if one slanders this sutra, then it means that one is cutting the seeds of Buddhahood in the beings of each of the Ten Worlds.　若し此の経を謗ぜば、義是(これ)十界の仏種を断ずるに当たる。

Such a person is certainly bound to fall into the hell of incessant suffering.　是の人無間(むけん)において決定(けつじょう)して堕在(だざい)す。

When might he manage to get out of hell again?　何ぞ出ずる期(ご)を得んや。

"I will leave this good medicine here. You should take it and not worry that it will not cure you."　「是好良薬 今留在此 汝可取服 勿憂不差」

"I will surely rejoice and so will the other Buddhas."　「我即歓喜 諸仏亦然」

icchantica　一闡提

If a believer's sin is slight, overlook it, and lead that person to obtain merits.　浅き罪ならば我よりゆるして功徳を得さすべし。

If it is serious, encourage to strengthen his faith, so that he can expiate the sin.　重きあやまちならば信心をはげまして消滅さすべし。

If a person cannot manage to cross a moat one feet wide, how can he cross a moat one that is ten or twenty feet? 　一丈のほり(堀)をこへぬもの十丈二十丈のほりを越ゆべきか

"If a person fails to have faith but instead slanders this sutra, immediately he will destroy all the seeds for becoming a Buddha in this world."　「若し人信ぜずして此の経を毀謗せば、則ち一切世間の仏種を断ぜん」

"If a person who has an illness is able to hear this sutra, then his illness will be wipe out and he will be neither old nor dead."　「若し人病有らんに是の経を聞くことを得ば 、病即ち消滅して不老不死ならん」

If I may state my thoughts, unless one climbs Mount Tai, one cannot know the height of the sky,　伏して惟(おもんみ)れば泰山(たいざん)に昇らずんば天の高きを知らず、

unless descends into the deep valleys, one cannot understand the thickness of the earth.　深谷に入らずんば地の厚きを知らず。

"If one does not have faith that small acts of goodness can lead the attainment of Buddhahood, then one will destroy the seeds for becoming a Buddha in this world."　「若し小善成仏を信ぜずんば則ち世間の仏種を断ずるなり」

"If one feigns and befriends but lacks the mercy to correct him, one is in fact his enemy."　「慈無くして詐(いつわ)り親しむは、即ち是(これ)彼が怨(あだ)なり 」

"If one can uphold this sutra, one will be upholding the Buddha's body."　「若し能く持つこと有らば即ち仏身を持つなり」

If one does not touch the sleeping lion, one will suffer no anger.　眠れる師子に手を付けざれば瞋(いか)らず。

If one does not stand the pole in the stream, one will raise no waves.　流れにさを(竿)ゝ立てざれば浪立たず。

And if one does not reproach those who slander the Law, one will undergo no hardship.　謗法を呵責(かしゃく)せざれば留難なし。

If Nichiren's compassion is truly great and encompassing, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo will spread for ten thousand years and more, for all eternity.　日蓮が慈悲曠大ならば南無妙法蓮華経は万年の外(ほか)未来までもながるべし

It has the merits to open the blind eyes of every living being in the country of Japan.　日本国の一切衆生の盲目をひらける功徳あり

And it blocks off the road that leads to the hell of incessant suffering.

無間地獄の道をふさぎぬ

If one is prepared to offer one's life, why should one spare any other treasure for the sake of Buddhism?　身命を捨つる人、他の宝を仏法に惜しむべしや。

On the other hand, if one is loath to part with one' s wealth, how can one possibly offer one's life, which is far more valuable?　又財宝を仏法におしまん物、まさる身命を捨つべきや。

If one uses the Lotus Sutra to pray for the welfare of the land, it will prove to be a great Law that will secure and protect the nation, ensuring joy and prosperity to everyone from the ruler down to the common people.　法華経を以て国土を祈らば、上一人より下万民に至るまで悉く悦び栄へ給ふべき鎮護国家の大百法なり。

If the tree's roots extend deep underground, then its branches will flourish; and the headwaters of the river are far away, its flow will be long-lasting.　根深ければ則ち条 (えだ) 茂く、源遠ければ流れ長きが如し　

"If the source id muddied, the stream will not run clear."　「源濁れば流れ清からず」

"If there is no waking within our minds, then how can enlightenment come about?"　「内薫に非ざるよりは何ぞ能く悟りを生ぜん」

"Hence one should understand that the power that brings about enlightenment is this true reality. "　「故に知んぬ、悟りを生ずる力は真如に在り、」

"This is why the waking carried out by the inner true reality manifests itself as a form of outside 'protection'."　「故に冥薫(みょうくん)を以て外護(げご)と為すなり」

"If these persons have not received the precepts of the Tathagata, they would not be able to be reborn even as foxes."　「若し如来の戒を受けざること有らば、終(つい)に野干(やかん)の身をも得ること能(あた)はず」

"If there should be an evil person who, his mind destitute of goodness, should for the space of a kalpa in the presence of the Buddha and constantly curse and revile the Buddha, that person's offence would still be rather light."　「若し悪人有って不善の心を以て、一劫の中に於て現に仏前に於て常に仏を毀罵(きめ)せん、其の罪・尚軽し」

"But if there were a person who spoke only one evil word to curse or defame the laypersons or monks or nuns who read and recite the Lotus Sutra, then his offence would be very grave"　「若し人一つの悪言を以て在家出家の法華経を読誦する者を毀呰（きし)せん、其の罪・甚だ重し 」

If they use Nichiren, but respect him wickedly, the country will die.　かゝる日蓮を用ひぬるともあしくうやま(敬)はゞ国亡ぶべし。

If we stop to consider, we realize that one observes the precepts in order that one may repay the debt of gratitude that one owes to one's father and mother, one's religious teachers, the ruler of the nation, one's own particular lord, living beings as a whole, and to the three treasures.　夫れ以(おもんみ)れば持戒は父母・師僧・国王・主君・一切衆生・三宝の恩を報ぜんが為なり。

If you do not question and resolve your doubts, you cannot dispel the dark clouds of illusion, 　聞かずんば争(いか)でか迷闇の雲を払はん。

any more than you could travel a thousand miles without legs.　足なくして争でか千里の道を行かんや。

"If you see a person who accepts and uphold this sutra, you should rise and greet him from afar, showing him the same respect you would a Buddha."　「当に起って遠く迎ふべきこと当に仏を敬ふが如くすべし」

If you speak this doctrine, devils will arise without fail.　此の法門を申すには必ず魔出来すべし。

If the devil did not appear, there would be no way of knowing that this is the correct teaching. 　魔競はずば正法と知るべからず。

"If you want to understand the causes that existed in the past, look at the results as they are manifested in the present."

「過去の因を知らんと欲せば、其の現在の果を見よ」

"And if you want to understand what results will be manifested in the future, look art the causes that exist in the present."

「未来の果を知らんと欲せば、其の現在の因を見よ」

"I have been constantly in this saha world."　「我常在此娑婆世界」

In Buddhism, that teaching is judged supreme that enables all people, whether good or evil, to become Buddhas.　凡(およ)そ仏法と云ふは、善悪の人をゑらばず、皆仏になすを以て最第一に定むべし。

Surely anyone can grasp such a reasonable standard.是程の理をば何(いか)なる人なりとも知るべきなり。

In Buddhism, that which departs from the sutras and papers is known as an 'outside way'.　仏教には経論にはなれたるをば外道と云ふ

In responding to any type of questioning, first bring up the matter of the questioner's slandering of the law.　大段万事の問ひには誹謗の言を先とすべし。

"In the last five-hundred-year period, the exquisite way will spread and benefit humankind far into the future."　「後五百歳遠く妙道に沾(うるお)わん」

In the Latter Day of the Law there will be filled with the formidable enemies of the sole teachings.　末法には一乗の強敵(ごうてき)充満すべし。

Now is the time to take benefit in the same manner as Bodhisattva Fukyo. 　不軽菩薩の利益(りやく)此なり。

You who are my disciples, each of you should work diligently as this, work diligently at this!　各々我が弟子等はげませ給へ、はげませ給へ。

"In the nation when there are voices slandering the Law, the people will be reduced in number."　「国に謗法の声有るによて万民数を減じ、」

"But when in the family honor is paid diligently to the teachings, the seven disasters will most certainly be baniyshed."　「家に讃教の勤めあれば七難必ず退散せん」

In this age as well, it is not one's allies but one's powerful enemies who assist one's progress.　今の世間を見るに、人をよくな(成)すものはかたうど(方人)よりも強敵(ごうてき)が人をばよくなしけるなり。

In this way, the mountain temple and the royal house were like the pine and the cypress, and resembled the orchids and the grasses.　されば山門と王家とは松と柏(かしわ)との如し、蘭と芝ににたり。

When the pine withers, the cypress, too, is bound to wither, and when the orchids wilt, the grasses will as well. 　松か(枯)るれば必ず柏かれ、らん(蘭)しぼ(萎)めば又しば(芝)しぼむ。

It is difficult to understand this sutra properly without reference to the traditions that have been handed down concerning it.　此の経は相伝に有らざれば知り難し

"It is like someone coming from a land of famine should suddenly encounter a great king's feast."　「飢ゑたる国より来たって、忽(たちま)ち大王の膳に遇ふが如し」

It is possible to determine which persons are superior and which inferior according to which teachings they embrace.　教に依って人の勝劣を定む。

But unless one first knows which sutra is superior and which inferior, how is it possible to determine whether the persons who follow those sutras are to be assigned a high rank or low?　先づ経の勝劣を知らずして何ぞ人の高下を論ぜんや。　

It is said that even the moonlight will not deign to shine on the sleeve of an unfeeling person.　色なき人の袖にはそゞろに月のやどる事かは

It should be noted, however, that there were a total 187 translators who carried out the task of transmitting the sutras from India to the land of China.　然るに月氏より漢土に経を渡せる訳人は一百八十七人なり。

With the exception of one man, the Master Kumarajiva, all the other 186, when they produced their translations, added water to the milk of the teachings and mixed poison with the medicine.　其の中に羅什(らじゅう)三蔵一人を除きて、前後の一百八十六人は純乳に水を加へ薬に毒を入れたる人々なり。

"Joy " means that oneself and others together experience joy.　喜とは自他共に喜ぶ事なり。

Just as poison turns into medicine, so do ordinary individuals change into Buddhas.　毒薬変じて薬となり、衆生変じて仏となる。

Accordingly, we call this the mystic law.　故に妙法と申す。

Just as there are no ordinary stones in the K'un-lun Mountains and no poisons on the mountain island of P'eng-lai, so Japan is purely and wholly a country of the Lotus Sutra.　譬へば崑崙(こんろん)山に石なく蓬莱(ほうらい)山に毒なきが如く、日本国は純(もっぱ)らに法華経の国なり。

Lightly Receiving a Heavy Sin of Previous Life　転重軽受法門

"The lion does not fear the big elephant, nor does he underestimate the little hare."　「師子は小兎(しょう)とを蔑(あなど)らず大象を畏(おそ)れず」

Listen to me calmly.　汝心を静めて聞け。

Little waves and a slight wind can hardly do harm to a large ship, but high waves and strong winds can easily overturn a small ship.　小波小風は大船を損ずる事かた(難)し。大波大風には小舟やぶ(破)れやすし。

Similarly, distortions in the secular rule of the sovereign are like little waves and a slight wind and can do little harm to a great nation or a great man.　王法の曲がるは小波小風のごとし。大国と大人をば失ひがたし。

But the distortion of Buddhism, like high waves and strong winds that overturn a small ship, can without doubt bring about the destruction of the nation.　仏法の失(とが)あるは大風大波の小舟をやぶるが如し。国のやぶるゝ事疑ひなし。

The Lotus Sutra includes both principle and practice.　法華経は事理共に有るなり。

The fact that the Buddha attained enlightenment in the far distant past is an example of a matter pertaining to practice.　所謂久遠実成(くおんじつじょう)は事なり。

And the fact that persons of the two vehicles are capable of attaining Buddhahood is a matter of principle.　二乗作仏は理なり。

"The Lotus Sutra is like a great physician who change poison into medicine."　「例えば大薬師の能く毒を変じて薬と為すが如し」

"The Lotus Sutra is the teaching of shakubuku and smashing through the provisional doctrines."　「法華は折伏、権門の理を破す」
