S

San-wu-wei, or Zenmui 善無畏

A school may be defined as something that encompasses all of the three types of learning, namely, precepts, meditation and wisdom. 宗と申すは戒定慧の三学を備へたる物なり。

"A single moment of mind comprising the three thousand realms is itself the completely free Buddha and this completely free Buddha has got out of its noble form." 「一念三千即自受用身(じじゅゆうしん)、自受用身とは出尊形の仏なり」

The safety and and danger to the nation depend upon the honesty and dishonesty of politics, 国土の安危は政道の直否に在り、

"Shakyamuni, addressing persons of his time who in previous existences cultivated good roots, preached the doctrines of the lesser vehicle and assisted and protected them." 「本(もと)已に善有り、釈迦は小を以て之を将護し」

But Bodhisattva Fukyo, addressing persons who in past existences did not cultivate good roots, expounded the doctrines of the great vehicle, forcing them to hear it, though it angered them." 「本未だ善有らず、不軽は大を以て之を強毒す」


Shakyamuni Buddha’s original enlightenment in the distant past 久遠実成 くおんじつじょう


Shakyamuni's, however, is the Buddhism of the harvest, and this is the sowing seeds. 但し彼は脱、此は種なり

The core of his teaching is one chapter and two halves, and the core of mine is the five characters of the title [Myoho--renge-kyo] alone.  

彼は一品二半、此は但題目の五字なり


Shakyamuni's practices and the virtues he consequently attained are all contained within the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo.

釈尊の因行果徳の二法は妙法蓮華経の五字に具足す

If we believe in these five characters, we will naturally be granted the same merits as he was.

我等此の五字を受持すれば自然に彼の因果の功徳を譲り与へたまふ


"Shakyamuni taught the shallow is easy to embrace, but the profound is difficult." 「浅きは易く深きは難しとは釈迦の所判なり」

"To discard the shallow and seek the profound is the way of a person of courage." 「浅きを去って深きに就くは丈夫の心なり」


Significance of Attaining Enlightenment one’s Present Form through Receiving the True Entity of the Precept 戒体即身成仏義

"Since hatred and jealousy toward this sutra around even when the Tathagata is in the world." 「而も此の経は如来の現在すら猶怨嫉(なお・おんしつ)多し」

1) subtle 淡(あわき)

2) salty 鹹(しおからき)

Since that time, the springs and autumns have succeeded each other, and the year have piled upon years 爾しより来 (このか) た春秋相移り星霜相積れり

"This Lotus Sutra is the most difficult to believe and the most difficult to understand." 「而も其の中に於いて此の法華経は最も為(こ)れ難信難解なり」


The sutras preached in the forty and more years before the Lotus Sutra contain no mention of the mutual possession of the Ten Worlds. 法華経より外の四十余年の諸経には十界互具なし

And if the principle of the mutual possession of the Ten World is not enunciated, then we have no way of understanding the Buddhahood that is within our mind. 十界互具を説かざれば内心の仏界を知らず

And if we do not understand the Buddhahood within our own minds, then the other Buddhas who are outside ourselves will not manifest themselves. 内心の仏界を知らざれば外の諸仏も顕はれず

Superior Doctrines Described in the Outstanding Principles of the Lotus Sutra 秀句十勝抄

Volume six of the Lotus Sutra says; 法華経第六に云はく

1) voices of hell dwellers 地獄声

2) voices of beasts 餓鬼声

3) voices of hungry spirits 畜生声

5) monks' voices, nuns' voices world of human beings 比丘比丘尼声 人道

6) voices of heavenly beings world of heavenly beings 天声 天道

Above are the name of the Ten Worlds 以上十法界の名目なり


Tenth is the world of Buddha. Those who are in the stage of bodhisattva and who undertake to carry out the four universal vows as their precepts. 第十に仏界とは、菩薩の位に於て四弘誓願(しぐせいがん)を発すを以て戒と為す


That ordinary people born in the latter age can believe in the Lotus Sutra is due to the fact that the world of Buddhahood is present in the human world. 末代の凡夫出生して法華経を信ずるは人界に仏界を具足する故なり

That the Nembutsu leads to the hell of incessant suffering is a fact that has been established by the Buddhas of the three existences of past, present and future. 念仏無間は三世諸仏の配立(はいりゅう)なり。

"That which accords with the sutras is to be written down and use it. But put no faith in anything that in word or meaning fails to do so." 「修多羅と合ふ者は録して之を用ひ、文無く義無きは信受すべからず」

"There are not two Buddhas in the world, there are not two rulers in the nation." 「世に二仏無く、国に二主無し」

"In the realm of one Buddha, there are not two Venerable Ones." 「一仏の境界に二の尊号無し」


There is no treasure that surpass a child 子にすぎたる宝なし


Therefore, I expect a confrontation head to head with you in a debate!  併(しかしなが)ら対決の時を期(ご)す。

Writings do not fully express a word, and a word does not fully stand for the mind. 書は言(ことば)を尽くさず。言は心を尽くさず。


Therefore, rather than offering a myriad of prayers and rituals, first and foremost it is vital to eliminate the single evil cause of all adversities 如かず、彼の万祈を修せんよりは此の一凶を禁ぜんには


There is the beautiful pine tree in the depth of the valley, but if the skilled gardener is unaware of this existence, the error is in his. 澗底(かんてい)の長松(ちょうしょう)を未だ知らざるは良匠(りょうしょう)の誤り、

Dressing in beautiful clothes in the dark, but if people fail to recognize him, this is due to their stupidity.

暗中の錦衣(きんい)を見ざるは愚人の失(とが)なり


They bowed in obeisance and departed 作礼而去 さらいにこ

"They may be subjected to various other sufferings and retributions. However it is due to the merits obtained by protecting the Law that they can diminish in this lifetime their suffering and retribution." 「及び余の種々の人間の苦報現世に軽く受くるは、斯(これ)護法の功徳力に由る故なり」

"This cluster of unsurpassed jewels has come to us unsought and automatically." 「無上宝珠 不求自得」

This is most vexing 悩ましい じれったい もどかしい 悔しい

This Gohonzon is the robe to protect you in the world after death. 此の御本尊こそ冥途のいしゃう(衣装)なれ。


This is nothing other than what is taught in the Lotus Sutra. 法華経とは別の事無し

The cause and effect of the ten Worlds were clarified in the sutras preached prior to the Lotus. 十界の因果は爾前の経に明かす

But now with the Lotus Sutra the fact that the cause and effect of the Ten Worlds are mutually possessed is set forth. 今は十界の因果互具をおきたてたる計りなり


This is the law of birth and death 是生滅法

This is what I heard 如是我聞

This must be kept secret! 秘す可し

"This, my land, remains safe and tranquil." 「我此土安穏」 

"This person, as he passes through the world, can wipe out the darkness of living beings." 「斯人行世間 能滅衆生闇 」


"This [Lotus] sutra has the constantly abiding Buddha nature as its throat," 「然も此の経は常住仏性を以て咽喉(のんど)と為し」

"the wonderful practice of the single vehicle as its eyes," 「一乗の妙行を以て眼目と為し」

"the renewal of life in the decayed seeds as its heart," 「再生敗種(さいせいはいしゅ)を以て心腑(しんぷ)と為し」

"and the revelation of the Buddha's original enlightenment and his immeasurable life span as its life." 「顕本遠寿(けんぽんおんじゅ)を以て其の命と為す」


"This sutra provides good medicine for the ills of the people of the whole world." 「此の経は則ち為(こ)れ閻浮提の人の病の良薬なり」

Think all this over very carefully 能く能く之を思うべし

"Those person dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers." 「在在諸仏土 常与師倶生」

"Those with impure hearts" means those who refuse to embrace the Lotus Sutra, as is stated in the fifth volume of the sutra. 心けがれたると申すは法華経を持たざる人の事なり。此の経の五の巻に見えたり。

"Those who hear the Law, speak slanderously of it, and fall into hell as a result, are still superior to those who offer alms to Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges." 「法を聞きて謗を生じ、地獄に堕するは恒沙(ごうしゃ)の仏を供養する者に勝る」

"Those who praise him will receive blessings that will pile up as high as Mount Sumeru, while those who slander him will open a gate that will condemn them to the hell of incessant suffering."  「讚むる者は福を安明に積み、謗る者は罪を無間に開く」


Though the trees may desire to still, the wind will not cease to blow, 木はしづかならんと思へえども風やまず、

though we may wish for spring to linger, it must give way to summer.  春を留(とど)めんと思へども夏となる。


Three bodies in a single body 三身即一身


Three bodies of the Buddha 三身

1) the Dharma body 法身

2) the reward body 報身

3) the manifested body 応身

 

Three Buddha natures of the living beings 衆生の三仏性

1) innate Buddha nature 正因仏性

2) the wisdom to perceive it 了因仏性

Three calamities 三災

1) the first high grain prices 穀貴

Throughout the four continents of the world, there are not two suns. 四天下(てんげ)の中に全く二の日無し、

Within the four seas, how can there be two rulers? 四海の内・豈(あに)両主有らんや。


Thwarting or rejecting evil and uphold good 捨悪持善


To be furnished with the Ten Worlds in our minds means that all ten, without a single exception, exist in one world. 十界互具とは十界一界もか(欠)けず一界にあるなり。

Because of this it is called a mandala. 之に依って曼荼羅とは申すなり。


To be praised by foolish - that is the greatest shame! 愚人にほめられたるは第一のはぢなり

To mix other things with this Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is a grave error. 此の南無妙法蓮華経に余事をまじ(交)へば、ゆゝしきひが(僻)事なり。

To reveal the depths of the secret storehouse - this is called myo, or wonderful. 「秘密の奥蔵を発く。之を称して妙と為す」


To take up bows and arrows or sticks and staves to protect the Lotus Sutra is a means provided for in Buddhism. 仏法守護の為の弓箭兵杖は仏法の定むる法なり。

It would be as if one were to collect swords and staves in order to protect the king of the land. 例せば国王守護の為に刀杖を集むるが如し。

The outcome depends on whether your piety is thick or thin. 信心の厚薄によるべきなり。

To believe is the basis of Buddhism. 仏法の根本は信を以て源とす。


What it Means to Hear the Buddha Vehicle for the First Time 始聞仏乗義

What it Means to Slander the law 顕謗法抄

"When a spider appears, it means that some happy event is near, and if a magpie chatters, it foretells the coming of a guest." 「蜘蛛(ちちゅう)掛かりて喜び事来たり、かん鵲(じゃく)鳴きて行人(たびびと)来たる」


When a vassal will warn the king, that nation will take its correct course, 諫臣国に在れば則ち其の国正しく

and when a son will have advice, the family will continue to be right.  争子(そうし)家に在れば則ち其の家直し


When the doctrine of the mutual possession of the Ten Worlds is expounded, this is called the "wonderful law." 今の妙法とは此等の十界を互ひに具すと説く時、妙法と申す

When the hindrances being called the three obstacles and four devils will appear, a wise man rejoices, and a foolish man retreats. 三障四魔と申す障(さわ)りいできたれば、賢者はよろこび、愚者は退くこれなり。

"When the lives of these persons come to an end, they will be received into the hands of a thousand Buddhas, who will free them from all fear and keep them from falling into the evil paths of existence." 「是人命終為千仏授手、令不恐怖 不堕悪趣」


When two sons of Emperor Montoku were rivals for the throne, the Tendai priest Eryo prayed with all his might for the success of the younger brother, and he in fact ascended the throne. 慧亮(えりょう)脳を破するの時、次弟(じてい)位に即き、

And through the prayers for protection by the Tendai priest So'o, the evil spirit of the Shingon priest Shinzei, which had taken possession of the consort of Emperor Uda, was overpowered and driven out.  相応・加持するの時、真済(しんぜい)の悪霊伏せらるゝ等是なり。


When with our mouths we chant the Mystic Law, our Buddha nature, being summoned, will invariably emerge. 口に妙法をよび奉れば我が身の仏性もよばれて必ず顕はれ給ふ。

The Buddha nature of Brahma and Teishaku, being called, will protect us, and the Buddha nature of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, being summoned, will rejoice. 梵王・帝釈の仏性はよばれて我等を守り給ふ。仏菩薩の仏性はよばれて悦び給ふ。

When you will erect any stupas in the future, please describe the title of the Lotus Sutra. 此れより後々の御そとば(卒塔婆)にも法華経の題目を顕はし給へ。


Whether they are correct or incorrect in their views is to be judged solely on the basis of the doctrines they expound. 法門をもて邪正をたゞすべし

It is not to be decided on the basis of whether or not they are intelligent or can display supernatural powers. 利根と通力とにはよるべからず

Without the seed of Buddhahood, that is, the three thousand realms in a single moment of mind, sentient beings cannot become Buddhas, and any statue or painting would be an object of devotion in name only. 一念三千の仏種に非ざれは、友情(うじょう)の成仏・木画(もくえ)二像の本尊は有名無実なり

Woman obey others and thereby cause others to obey them. 女人となる事は物に随って物を随へる身なり。

The word "ku" also refers to breaking evil, while the element toku or doku refers to bringing about good 悪を滅するを功と云ひ、善を生ずるを徳と云ふなり

The word "purity" refers to the mind that has faith in the Lotus Sutra, while the words "impurity" or "lack of purity" refer to slanderers of the Law. 浄とは法華経の信心なり、不浄とは謗法なり


When the skies are clear, the ground is illuminated. 天晴れぬれば地明らかなり

You can hardly claim that the Shingon sutras cannot be classified among the teachings set forth by Shakyamunu in the five periods of his preaching life. 一代五時を離れて外に仏法有りと云ふべからず。

You will grow younger, and your good fortune will be piled up. 年はわか(若)うなり、福はかさ(重)なり候べし。

That would imply that two Buddhas had appeared simultaneously in a single world, which is absurd. 若し有らば二仏並出(びょうしゅつ)の失(とが)あらん。

Nor is it conceivable that some outside Buddha would come to Shakyamuni's realm and presume to expound his teachings there.  又其の法を釈迦統領の国にき(来)たして弘むべからず。


You must first of all set aside the doctrines for the moment and consider the reason of the matter. 汝先(ま)づ法門を置いて道理を案ぜよ。

Can anyone, without inquiring into the essential meaning of the Buddha's lifetime teachings or investigating the basic principles of the ten schools, presume to admonish the nation and teach others? 抑(そもそも)一代の大途を伺はず十宗の淵底を究めずして、国を諫(いさ)め人を敎ふべきか。


You must not doubt me about the future for the reason that my words had been no mistake in this world. 現世に云ひをく言(ことば)の違(たが)はざらんをも(以)て後生(ごしょう)の疑ひをなすべからず。

You should base your mind on the ninth consciousness, and carry out your practice in the sixth consciousness. 心地を九識にもち、修行をば六識にせよ。
