My unremitting efforts never slacken, even here on this mountain. 此の山にしても・をこた(怠)らず候なり。


Myo in India is rendered as sa, and in China, as miao. 妙とは天竺には薩(さ)と云ひ、漢土には妙と云ふ。

Myo means to be fully endowed, which in turn has the meaning of "perfect and full." 妙とは具(ぐ)の義なり。具とは円満の義なり。


Myo means to revive, that is, to return to life. 妙とは蘇生の義なり。蘇生と申すはよみがえる義なり。 


Myo represents death [potentiality], and Ho, life [manifestation]. 妙は死、法は生なり。

There two laws of life and death are the entities of the Ten Worlds, it is called the entities of Myoho-renge-kyo. 此の生死の二法が十界の当体なり、又此を当体蓮華とも云ふなり。

Name, entity, quality, function, and teaching 名体宗用教

Nagarjuna, or Ryuju 竜樹


Names have the value of being able to summon the things to which they refer, and things as a matter of function respond to the name that refers to them. 名は物をめ(召)す徳あり。物は名に応ずる用(ゆう)あり。

In similar fashion, the name, or daimoku, of the Lotus Sutra has the power to summon the Buddha nature to which it refers.  法華題名の功徳も亦以て此くの如し。


Neither non-Buddhists nor the enemies of Buddhism can destroy the correct teaching of the Tathagata, 外道悪人は如来の正法を破りがたし。

but the Buddha's disciples definitely do. 仏弟子等必ず仏法を破るべし。


Nembutsu Chosen above All 撰択集

Nembutsu leads to the hell of incessant suffering 念仏無間

Nine thoughts to one word 九思一言

"The nine worlds represent the provisional, the world of Buddhahood represents the true" 「九界を権と為し仏界を実と為す」

Ninth is the world of bodhisattvas, those who remain among the ordinary mortals of the six paths of existence, thinking little of their own lives but much of the lives of others, aiming always to take evil upon themselves and to to dole out good to other beings. 第九に菩薩界とは、六道の凡夫の中に於て、自身を軽んじ他人を重んじ、悪を以て己に向け善を以て他に与へんと念(おも)ふ者あり。

Nirvana Sutra says, "Must be the master of mind and not let mind become master." 涅槃経に云はく「願ひて心の師とは成るとも、心を師とせざれ」云云。


The Nirvana Sutra says, "The varied sufferings that all living beings undergo - all these are Tathagata's sufferings." 涅槃経に云はく「一切衆生の異の苦を受くるは悉く是如来一人の苦なり」

And Nichiren declares that the common sufferings that all living beings undergo, all these are Nichiren's own sufferings! 日蓮が云はく、一切衆生の同一の苦は悉く是日蓮一人の苦なり。


No one can escape death once born as a human being, so why do you not practice in preparation for the next life? 抑(そもそも)人界に生をうくるもの誰か無常を免(まぬか)れん。さあらんに取っては何ぞ後世のつとめ(勤)をいたさゞらんや。

No one parent has ever suggested to his child that a child should throw away this world to become Buddha. をや(親)とういうをやの世をすてゝ仏になれと申すをやは一人もなきなり。

no poverty 無貧

None of you should lament for me.  各各なげかせ給うべからず

"Not accepting a single verse of the other sutras." 「余経の一偈をも受けざれ 」


Now, however, we have entered the Latter Day of the Law, and the daimoku that I, Nichiren, chant is different from the earlier ages and this Nam-myoho-renge-kyo encompasses both practices for oneself and the saving of others. 末法に入って今日蓮が唱ふる所の題目は前代に異なり、自行化他に亘りて南無妙法蓮華経なり。

Its five characters are the five major principles of name, body, source, function, and teaching. 名体宗用教の五重玄の五字なり。


Now, in this age of the Latter Day of the Law, neither the Lotus Sutra nor the other sutras have the power to save the people. 今、末法に入りぬれば余経も法華経もせん(詮)なし。

Only Nam-myoho-renge-kyo can lead all people to Buddhahood. 但南無妙法蓮華経なるべし。


"Now this threefold world is all my possession." 「今此の三界は皆(これ)是我が有(う)なり」

"And the living beings in it are all my children." 「其の中の衆生は悉(ことごと)く是我が子なり」

"Now this place is beset by many pains and trials. I am the only person who can rescue and protect others." 「而も今此の処は諸の患難(げんなん)多し。唯我一人のみ能く救護(くご)を為す」

One should not be intimidated by the fact that so many hold such beliefs. 人の多くおもふにはおそるべからず、

Nor does the truth of a belief depend on whether it has been held for a long or short time. 亦時節の久近にも依るべからず。

The point is simply whether or not it conforms with the text of the scriptures and with reason. 専ら経文と道理とに依るべし。


One should ponder it deeply 深く之を案ずべし


"One who destroys or brings confusion to the Buddha's teachings is betraying them."  「仏法を壊乱(えらん)するは仏法の中の怨なり」

"If one pretends to be something he is not and is intimate with another person, but lacks the mercy to correct him, one is in fact his enemy." 「慈無くして詐(いつわ)り親しむは即ち是彼が怨なり」

"One who rids the offender of evil is actually his parent." (Shoan)「彼が為に悪を除くは即ち是彼が親なり」(章安)


"One who excludes his evil for the sake him is in fact his parent." (Shoan) 「彼が為に悪を除くは即ち是彼が親なり」(章安)

Oneness of the four kinds of lands 四土不二

Only chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the meaning of polishing. 只南無妙法蓮華経と唱へたてまつるを是をみがくとは云うなり

Only my disciples are now the ones who openly accept the Lotus Sutra, and the people of Japan are the ones who oppose it and thereby form a reverse relationship with it. 日蓮が門弟は順縁、日本国は逆縁なり。

The passage of the Six Paramitas Sutra says to become the teacher of your mind rather than let your mind master you. 心の師とはなるとも心を師とせざれとは六波羅蜜経の文ぞかし。

Peace and security in one's present existence 現世安穏


"The people who lived when the Buddha was in the world had the innate capacity to gain enlightenment, and therefore the Buddha took their capacities carefully into account when he preached to them." 「仏世は当機の故に簡(えら)ぶ」 

"But in the case of persons of the latter age, one preaches the truth to them directly so that they can form a relationship with it." 「末代は結縁(けちえん)の故に聞かしむ」


Perfect and quick enlightenment 円頓

Permanent, joyful, endowed with self, and pure 常楽我浄

A person at the stage of being a beginner in theory is actually a Buddha of original enlightenment instantly. 理即本覚

Persons living the household life, though they may have no particular wisdom or carry out any particular religious practices, can, though the merits gained by combating and suppressing those who slander the Law, remove themselves from the sufferings of birth and death. 在家の諸人別の智行無しと雖も、謗法の者を退治する功徳に依って生死を離るべきなり


"Persons of the two vehicles have annihilated consciousness, and therefore cannot arouse the mind that aspires to enlightenment." 「二乗は智を滅す、心生ずべからず」

"And yet the Lotus Sutra can cure them, which is why it is called myo, or wonderful" (Myoraku)  「法華能く治す、復(また)称して妙と為す」(妙楽)


A person who presumes to expound even one word or phrase of the Lotus Sutra must have a very clear understanding of the relative profundity of the various sacred teachings of the Buddha's lifetime and of their proper sequence. 此の法華経を一字も一句も説く人は、必ず一代聖教の浅深と次第とを能く能く弁(わきま)へたらむ人の説くべき事に候。
