Gosho 右衛門太夫(えもんのたゆう)殿御返事 A reply to Lord Ikegami Minenaka.

神力品(じんりきほん)に云く「日月の光明(こうみょう)の能(よ)く諸の幽冥(ゆうみょう)を除くが如く、斯(こ)の人世間に行じて能(よ)く衆生の闇(やみ)を滅す」等云云。

The “Supernatural Powers” chapter states, “As the light of the sun and moon can banish all obscurity and gloom, so this person as he advances through the world can wipe out the darkness of living beings”.

The Wondrous Powers of the Tathagata chapter of the Lotus Sutra states: Just as the sunlight or moonlight dispels the darkness, this person will practice [Myoho-Renge-Kyo] in the world and eliminate [ the fundamental] darkness of all living beings.

The chapter of 'the supernatural power' says. Like the sunlight or moonlight dispels the darkness, this person will do the religious practice in the world and eliminate well the fundamental darkness of all living beings.

此(こ)の経文に斯人(しにん)行(ぎょう)世間の五(いつつ)の文字の中の人の文字をば誰とか思(おぼ)し食(め)す。

In this passage from the sutra, in the five-character phrase “this person as he advances through the world,” to whom do you think “this person” refers?

Who do you think “this person” is as described in this sutra?

Who do you think “this person” in the sentence "this person will do the religious practice in the world"?

上行(じょうぎょう)菩薩の再誕(さいたん)の人なるべしと覚(おぼ)えたり。

I believe that it must be the person who is the reincarnation of Bodhisattva Superior Practices.

I think that “this person” is the reincarnation of Bodhisattva Jōgyō.

I believe that “this person” is the reincarnation of Jogyo bodhisattva.

経に云(いわ)く「我が滅度(めつど)の後に於(おい)て応(まさ)に斯(こ)の経を受持すべし、是(こ)の人仏道に於て決定(けつじょう)して疑(うたがい)有ること無(な)けん」云云(うんぬん)。

The sutra states, “After I have passed into extinction, [one] should accept and uphold this sutra. Such a person assuredly and without doubt will attain the Buddha way”.

The sutra says, “After I have passed away, that person would accept this sutra and keep it. This person will determine to attain Buddhahood and he never have doubt about it!".

貴(き)辺(へん)も上行菩薩の化(け)儀(ぎ)をたすくる人なるべし。

I am sure that you, too, are one who assists Bodhisattva Superior Practices in his propagation efforts.

I am sure that you, too, are one who helps the ceremony of the propagation of Jogyo bodhisattva!
