第四心(しん)懐(ね)悔恨(けこん)の事

Point Four, on the words “his heart filled with regret and longing”.

The 4^th. ‘Compunction’.

日本国の一切衆生は子の如(ごと)く日蓮は父の如し、

The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings says: All the various living beings in the country of Japan are comparable to the son, and Nichiren is comparable to the father.

The Orally Conveyed Teachings say: All the various living beings in the country of Japan are comparable to the child, and Nichiren is comparable to the father.

法華不信の失(とが)に依(よ)つて無間(むけん)大城(だいじょう)に堕(お)ちて返つて日蓮を恨(うら)みん、

Because they fail to have faith in the Lotus Sutra, the living beings fall into the great citadel of the hell of incessant suffering, but instead of blaming themselves, on the contrary they look upon Nichiren with reproach.

又(また)日蓮も声も惜(おし)まず法華を捨(す)つ可からずと云(い)うべきものを霊山(りょうぜん)にて悔(くい)ること之(こ)れ有る可きか

For his part, Nichiren has never spared his voice in urging them not to cast aside the Lotus Sutra, and so on Eagle Peak he must have his feelings of regret [for their dwelling in hell].

However, in the Eagle Peak, I either may repent that I should have said with every effort that they must not abandon the Lotus Sutra.
