Reply to Sairenbo

文永九年四月十三日 五十一歳御作

 April13,1272 (Age: 51)


(しか)るに法華経には「(わが)滅度の後に(おい)(まさ)()の経を受持(じゅじ)すべし。()の人仏道に於て決定(けつじょう)して疑ひ有ること無けん」と。

Now, in the Lotus Sutra it is stated, “After I have passed into extinction, [one] should accept and uphold this sutra. Such a person assuredly and without doubt will attain the Buddha way”.

However, the Lotus Sutra says, “After I have passed away, one will accept this sutra and hold. The Buddhahood of such a person will be decided and it is free from doubt".

(あるい)は「(すみ)やかに()()く無上仏道を得たり」等云云。

It also says, “This way one will quickly attain the unsurpassed Buddha way”.

It says again, “I have attained the crowning Buddhahood immediately”.

(中略) ()くの如く思ひつゞけ候へば、我等は流人(るにん)なれども身心共にうれしく候なり。

(Omission) If we continue to think in this way, then, though we may be exiles, we have cause to be joyful in both body and mind!

大事の法門をば(ちゅう)()沙汰(さた)し、成仏の理をば時々刻々にあぢはう。

So day and night I ponder the important doctrines, and hour by hour, moment by moment, I savor the principle that allows us to attain Buddhahood.

We consider the important doctrines day and night, and we savor the principle of nature that attains Buddhahood for every moment.

()くの如く過ぎ行き候へば年月を送れども久しからず、()ぐる時刻も(ほど)あらず。

And because I pass the time in this fashion, though months and years go by, it does not seem long at all, and the hours that have elapsed do not seem like many.

例せば釈迦・多宝の二仏塔中(たっちゅう)(びょう)()して、法華の妙理をうなづき合ひ給ひし時、五十小劫(しょうこう)神力(じんりき)の故に諸の大衆をして半日(はんにち)の如しと(おも)はしむと()ひしが如くなり。

It is similar to the case described in the sutra when the two Buddhas Shakyamuni and Many Treasures, seated side by side in the treasure tower, nodded in approval over the wonderful principles of the Lotus Sutra, and although fifty small kalpas had elapsed, because of the supernatural powers of the Buddha, it seemed to the great crowd assembled there like no more than half a day.

It is similar to the case described in the sutra when the two Buddhas of Shakyamuni and Taho, sitting down side by side in the treasure tower, nodded over the wonderful principles of the Lotus Sutra, and although fifty small kalpas had elapsed, because of the supernatural powers of the Buddha, the audience who gathered seemed like no more than half a day.
