土木殿御返事 

Letter from Echi.  Letter to Lord Toki.

文永八年九月十四日 五十歳御作

御嘆(おなげ)きはさることに候へどもこれには一定(いちじょう)と本より()して候へばなげ()かず候。

いまゝで(くび)の切れぬこそ本意なく候へ。法華経の御ゆへに過去に(くび)うし()なひたらば、かゝる少身の()にて候べきか。

Rather, I regret that I have yet to be beheaded. Had I been decapitated on account of the Lotus Sutra in a past existence, I would not have been born as such a lowly person in this life.
