 The Real aspect of the Gohonzon

弘安二年八月二十三日 五十八歳御作

August23,1279. 58 years old.


(ここ)に日蓮いかなる不思議にてや候らん、竜樹(りゅうじゅ)(てん)(じん)等、天台・妙楽等だにも(あら)はし給はざる(だい)曼荼羅(まんだら)を、末法二百年の(ころ)、はじめて法華弘通(ぐつう)はた()じるしとして(あら)はし(たてまつ)るなり。

How wondrous it is that, around two hundred years and more into the Latter Day of the Law, I was the first to reveal as the banner of propagation of the Lotus Sutra this great mandala that even those such as Nāgārjuna and Vasubandhu, T’ien-t’ai and Miao-lo were unable to express.

How mysterious it is for Nichiren. During two hundred years from the latter day of the Law, Nichiren revealed this marvelous mandala that even those such as Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu, Tientai and Miaolo were unable to express it, as the flag mark of propagation of the Lotus Sutra for the first time.

(これ)全く日蓮が自作に非ず、

多宝(たほう)塔中(たっちゅう)(だい)()()()(そん)分身(ぶんしん)の諸仏のすり()かた()()たる本尊なり。

It is the object of devotion that depicts Shakyamuni Buddha, the World-Honored One, seated in the treasure tower of Many Treasures Buddha,and the Buddhas who were Shakyamuni’s emanations as perfectly as a print matches its woodblock.

This is the Gohonzon which the great Shakyamuni Buddha and all incarnations of him printed to a wood block in the tower of Taho Tathagata.
