The Last Religious Precepts of Nikko

元弘三年一月十三日　日興上人八十八歳御作

　　　　January13, 1333.　Nikko Shonin, Age: 88.

夫(そ)れ以(おもん)みれば末法(まっぽう)弘通(ぐつう)の恵(けい)日(じつ)は極悪謗(ほう)法(ぼう)の闇を照らし、久遠(くおん)寿量(じゅりょう)の妙風(みょうふう)は伽耶(がや)始(し)成(じょう)の権門(ごんもん)を吹き払う、

“If I think, the sun of the propagating in the latter days of the Law lights up the darkness of the atrocious slander, and the marvelous wind of the eternal life span blows off the provisional and temporary teachings that Buddha had attained enlightenment in Buddha Gaya.

於戯(ああ)仏法に値(あ)うこと希(まれ)にして喩(たと)へを曇(どん)華(げ)の蕚(はなしべ)に仮(か)り類(たぐい)を浮木(うきぎ)の穴(あな)に比(ひ)せん、尚(なお)以(もっ)て足らざる者か。

Oh, for example, it is a fig which blooms only once in 3000 years, and the hole of the tree of a floating sandalwood in the vast ocean that it is rare to encounter the Law of Buddha, and it is thought that I still lack it.

爰(ここ)に我等宿縁(しゅくえん)深厚(じんこう)なるに依(よ)って幸ひに此(こ)の経に遇(あ)い奉ることを得(う)、

Fortunately, we were able to encounter this sutra here by destiny being thick deeply.

随(したが)って後学(こうがく)の為に条目(じょうもく)を筆端(ひったん)に染(そ)むる事、偏(ひとえ)に広宣(こうせん)流布(るふ)の金言を仰(あお)がんが為(ため)なり。

Therefore, the reasons why I write a precept for the future disciples is for receiving the wise saying of Kosen-rufu.
