An earthquake with a magnitude of over 8.0. (1900 - October 8, 2017) By Wikipedia. The audience gathered in the Matsuba Valley. In addition to the old adherents, including Kingo Shijo, Jonin Toki, Yoshitaka Kudo, and the Ikegami brothers, there are also black-robed monks whom one does not recognize. Two children either come into the side of the dirt floor and look at the state of affairs. Two people who were orphans became an under servant for Nichiren naturally, since they received kindness about the food and house. Nichiren called a boy Kumao and Takao each and loved them. Nichiren wears a gray robe and talks to the audience. “Who is a person destroying the Law of Buddha? Is it a person in authority or is it the mere common people? It is not so. A Buddhist priest who is admired by everybody and has collected respect for this world, he will destroy the Buddha's Law. The sutra says 'an insect inside the lion eats lion'. Other enemies are hard to break the law of Buddha. A very priest in the Law of Buddha will become a person destroying the Law of Buddha.” The Buddhist priest of black clothes interrupted. “Thou, Nichiren. Whom does the Buddhist priest mean? No, that doesn't remind me of anyone.” Nichiren answers calmly. “It is the priest Gokuraku-ji Ryoukan.” A stir happens in the audience. The believers of Nichiren either looked surprised. The Buddhist priest of black clothes rebukes. “Why do you say such a mad thing? The Priest Ryokan is said to be a living Buddha in this Kamakura. He builds bridges over deep rivers and roads over rough terrain by collecting tolls at the checkpoints. Something is wrong with you about saying such a holy person is an insect in lions.” Nichiren answers. “When we watch the behavior of the Priest Ryoukan now, he saves treasure, and lends money or rice with interest. Do you think it is the figure of the Buddhist monk? Who will believe this? It is troublesome to establish the checkpoint for a traveler. These are happening under our noses. Have you not seen it?” The Buddhist priest of black clothes strongly refutes Nichiren. "After all, the monk Ryokan is highly respected by the lords of Kamakura. He is not in a vulgar social position like you. The power of a monk is accumulated because he has the shogunate confidence. When there is no faith of lord Kamakura, there is no effect even if you tell a just argument so much.” Nichiren returns it with fortitude. “If lord Kamakura is a benevolent lord, he should be able to understand the Lotus Sutra surely. Do not laugh, please. In ancient times, there was the King Ajase (note) in the time of Shakyamuni, the emperor of Chen and Sui dynasty in the time of Tendai Daishi, and the Emperor Kanmu (note) in the time of Dengyo Daishi. Now, I only believe that.” The monk of black clothes left laughingly. Shijo Kingo was angry. He listened quietly, but he couldn't stand it. “What a rude Buddhist priest he is! I will question him severely.” Nichiren stopped him. "Please wait, the Lord Kingo. Leave him alone. He came to watch us.” The short-tempered Kingo, not heeding Nichiren's restraint, lashed out. Nichiren persuaded him as if to cool the mind of Kingo. “His is not an attitude of listening from the beginning. They are anxious about the spread of our Lotus Sutra sect.”
When the uproar died down, Nichiren introduced everyone to his new disciple. “By the way, I introduce him because a promising youth became a disciple in our sect”. The young Buddhist priest puts both hands on the floor. “My name is Sanmi-bo Nichigyo. The conditions of the clergy and laity are different, but let's work hard at propagation of the Lotus Sutra in perfect harmony.” Sanmibo bowed to everybody with a very proud facial expression. The all members lowered their head to Sanmibo deeply, too. Yoshitaka Kudo raised his voice unintentionally. “Gee, before we knew it, this building of ours has become lively, hasn't it?” “It is no wonder that priest Ryoukan wants to look into this!” All the members laughed. The epicenters of major earthquakes in Japan in the past. Red: M7 or higher, blue: Dead in other earthquakes, purple: Maximum seismic intensity of 6 or higher. By Wikipedia.
It was this time. The floor of the thatched hut has begun to shake. Everyone is in an uproar. Kingo ordered it. “It is an earthquake! Please be quiet, everybody. Open the window and the door!” Though Kingo had flown into a rage until a while ago, he directed everybody calmly. When an earthquake is generated, people cannot escape outside if they do not open a door and a window. If a building collapsed, they would be in danger of being crushed to death. Earthquakes were frequent in Kamakura these days, and it was not unusual. But wavering is big among other things tonight. Same time, the hall of the Kamakura Shogunate regent shook little by little. A paper-screen has begun to rattle. Tokiyori Hojo stood and watched over a ceiling. Brothers of Tokimune and Tokisuke came over here in a hurry. “Father!” “This is big. Call out soldiers, gather hastily.” The brothers leave panicking. The floors shook up and down then. Tokiyori shouts. “It's a vertical vibration!” The whole town of Kamakura shakes like a wave. While inhabitants took out household effects, they screamed. They went out and clustered around a well. The voice of a person sounded then from a well. Eerie sound echoes. The inhabitants were scattered with shrieks again. Furthermore, the ground shook violently again, and houses began to collapse. The screams echoed. Nichiren's room shook greatly, too. "Here it is dangerous. Everybody, please escape!" The house was lacerated to the two as soon as he said, and the ground where the crack was appeared from the bottom floor. They scream a warning. The scroll of sutras which Nichiren cherished rolls over. Nichiren seized it at the moment when a scroll of sutras fell to the crack. The surrounding disciples held him and protected him. Under the moonlight, the thatched hut was destroyed mercilessly. The pale moonlight lights up the scene that was too horrible to look at. Flame breaks out in the various places of the town. The people escape about the street. The disciples of Nichiren gathered and confirmed each one. “Is it all right? Is there an injury? Is everybody there? Is there a missing person?” Shijo Kingo, Toki Jonin and others who held a torch in a hand wait. Nichiren told believers. “Everybody, please go home as soon as possible.” Kingo nodded. “Certainly, let's go.” All members leave in every direction, and Chikugo-bo Nichiro and other disciples remain at the place where the thatched hut has stood. It seemed they were a little relieved and seemed to burst into tears. “Shonin, all of us are safe. This is nothing short of miraculous.” As Nichiren remembered, he groaned. “How are the children doing? Are two people safe?" All members turned pale and searched for all the area. “Where are you, Kumao, Takao!” They found boy Takao falling down on the side of the building which collapsed before long. Kumao crouches down at the side and is crying. “Takao!” They rushed, but there was no breath of Takao. Nichiren held Takao, who was sleeping and continued chanting the title. When an aftershock subsided, Takao was mourned by the title of the Lotus Sutra, and his body was cremated in that midnight by Nichiren and disciples.
The houses which were crushed lined up in the town of Kamakura in the morning. Every family cried on the side of the dead body which lay on the ground. This earthquake disaster was called the major earthquake of Shoka later. It is said that it was 7.5 magnitude from seven. Every building in Kamakura fell down without staying. The Kamakura Hachiman Shrine inclines mercilessly, too. The Mirror of the East mentions about this earthquake specially.
"August 23: A major earthquake in about 8 p.m.. Heard a sound. The Shinto shrine and the Buddhist temple broke without exception. The mountains collapsed, and the person and the house turned over. The earthen wall was perfectly damaged, and the ground of several places was split, and water springs out. The ground around the Nakageba Bridge was split, and a flame blazed from here and appeared. It is said that the color was blue."
A roof was attached to the earthen wall in those days. Because it is said that this was all damaged, we can understand how big an earthquake was. Disciple Nichiro and Nissho and others had begun to tidy up the ruined house from the next morning. Boy Kumao who barely survived endures sorrow and helps them. Kumao lost Takao, who grew up like a brother under Nichiren. After they almost cleared it up, all members put their hands together to a Buddhist stupa which was written Nam -myoho-renge-kyo. However, there is not a figure of Nichiren here. Nichiren told the disciples that he would go to the Iwamoto Jissoji temple early in the morning. He had already left by himself.
note Great Teacher Tendai 538-597. Founder of the Tendai sect of Buddhism during the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty in China. His family name was Chen and his real name was Chi-chi. At the age of 18, he was ordained under the Dharma master Hosho at Gagan-ji Temple. In the twenty-third chapter of the Lotus Sutra, in the chapter ‘Bodhisattva Medicine King’, the phrase "This is true devotion and this is the true Dharma" is said to have led him to the realization of the Lotus Sutra Concentration. At the age of 32, he received an imperial edict from the Sen emperor, and for eight years, in the presence of officials and the public, he taught the Lotus Sutra, the Daichidōron, and the Zenmon, gaining fame for his teachings. In 585, at the repeated request of Lord Chen, he lectured on the Mercy King Sutra and other subjects, and in 587, he preached on the Lotus Sutra. During the warring period at the end of Chen's reign, he gave the Bodhisattva Precepts to the Sui Dynasty's King Gwang of the Jin Dynasty, and was given the title of "Great Teacher of the Wisdom.” He then returned to his hometown and taught Hokke Gengi and Makashikan at Gyokusen-ji Temple. He then entered Mt. Tendai died at the age of 60. His teachings were transcribed by his disciple Shoan and compiled into the Three Treatises of the Lotus (Hokke-Mongu, Hokke-Gengi, and Makashikan). Nichiren Daishonin also taught that Tendai Daishi was the reincarnation of Bodhisattva Medicine, who in Japan was reincarnated as the great teacher Dengyo (Saicho). In "The Saint Encounters Difficulties," Nichiren Daishonin states that "Tendai Daishi attained the true meaning of his life in thirty-odd years, and Dengyo Daishi in twenty-odd years,” asserts that Tendai achieved the true purpose of his life through Makashikan lectures.
King Ajase Ajatashatru. Translated as "unborn grudge. King of Makada. At that time, Makada was the most powerful country in India. When he was the Crown Prince, he befriended Devadatta and took the throne by imprisoning and killing his father, King Binbashara, who was an outspoken defender of Buddhism. He also persecuted the Buddha, but later repented and became the outer guardian of the first gathering of sutras. It is said that Buddha gave up his own life to give AJase forty years of life.
