Letter to Ni'ike

The Zen school today generally violates the five constant virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and good faith.

The Zen sect today generally violates the five constant virtues of benevolence, justice, courtesy, intellect, and good faith.

To honor the wise and virtuous, to respect the elderly, and to protect the young are recognized universally as humane conduct in both Buddhist and non-Buddhist scriptures.

To honor the high person of virtue, to respect the elderly, and to love infant are recognized in the Law of Buddhist and non-Buddhist's precept.

But the Zen priests were until yesterday or the day before no more than uneducated rabble, unable to distinguish black from white. But now that they have donned priestly robes, they have become so conceited that they belittle the learned and virtuous priests of the Tendai and True Word schools.

However, the Zen priests are no more than the uneducated clowns or barbarians, and unable to distinguish black from white, until yesterday or the day before. Now that they have donned priestly robes, they have become so conceited that they belittle the learned and virtuous priests of the Tendai and Shingon sects, observe none of the courtesy and hope they rank higher than all others.

They observe none of the proper manners and think they rank higher than all others. These people are so insolent that even animals are better behaved.

 These people are arrogant and inferior to an animal.

The Great Teacher Dengyō states that

Great Teacher Dengyo says in the explanatory note.

He asks: if lowly animals conduct themselves with such propriety, how can human beings be so lacking in courtesy?

He asks: even lowly animals conduct themselves with such propriety, why can human beings be lacking in courtesy?

Judging from the words of Dengyō, it is only natural that the Zen priests should be confused about Buddhism when they are ignorant even of how people should behave.

Above is summary. It is natural that the Zen priests are confused about Buddhism doctrine.They do not even know the morals of human beings.

They are acting like Pāpīyas, the heavenly devil.

Is this not conduct of the devil or monster?"
