On the Nation’s Slander of the Law

On the Nation’s Slander of the Law

Letter to Nambu Rokurō

May 16, 1271 (Age: 50)

If one does not touch the sleeping lion, one will suffer no anger.

If one does not disturb a sleeping lion, it will not roar.

If one does not plant the pole in the stream, one will raise no waves.

If one does not drive a stake into a swiftly flowing river, the surface of the water will not ripple.

And if one does not reproach those who slander the Law, one will undergo no hardship.

If a person does not refute others’ erroneous teachings, he will not encounter various hardships.

“If even a good monk sees someone destroying the teaching and disregards him, failing to reproach him …” If you have no qualms about the word “disregard,” then all may be fine for you at present, but you may be certain that later you will fall into the hell of incessant suffering !

[The Buddha admonishes,] “Suppose a decent priest becomes aware of one who slanders the correct Law. If he lets the slanderer be, without reproaching him, [expelling, and correcting him by exposing his faults, we should know that this priest is an enemy of Buddhism.]” If one ignores this admonishment, then although he may be all right for now, he should wait and see what follows. Without a doubt, he will fall into the hell of incessant suffering.
