Reply to the Widow of Ueno

 Since your deceased husband was a votary of this sutra, he doubtless attained Buddhahood just as he was.

 I have no doubt that your deceased husband [the late Nanjō Hyō’e Shichirō] attained Buddhahood in his present form since he was a votary of the Lotus Sutra.

 You need not grieve so much over his passing.

 Therefore, there is no reason to grieve.

 On the other hand, to grieve is only natural for ordinary people.

 Of course, it is natural for a common mortal to grieve.

 However, even sages are sometimes sad.

 Even a sage can grieve.

 Could the lamenting of all the great enlightened disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha at his passing have been meant to show the behavior of ordinary people?

 When Shakyamuni Buddha passed away, his major disciples, who had attained enlightenment, might have grieved in the manner of common mortals.

 You should by all means perform as much good as you possibly can for the sake of your deceased husband.

 [Regardless of your state of mind] you should devote yourself as much as possible to your Buddhist practice and, through the Gohonzon, transfer good fortune to your deceased husband.
