The Two Kinds of Illness

Reply to Nakatsukasa sa’emon-no-jō


弘安元年六月二十六日 五十七歳御作

()れ人に二病あり。一には身の(やまい)所謂(いわゆる)地大百一・水大百一・火大百一・風大百一・()(じょう)四百四病。

The illnesses of human beings may be divided into two general categories, the first of which is illness of the body. Physical diseases comprise one hundred and one disorders of the earth element, one hundred and one of the water element, one hundred and one of the fire element, and one hundred and one of the wind element, for a total of four hundred and four maladies.

There are two types of illness that afflict humans. The first is illness of the body, which consists of 101 illnesses related to each of [the four elements of] earth, water, fire, and wind. This would amount to a total of 404 illnesses.

 此の病は()水・流水(るすい)耆婆(ぎば)偏鵲(へんじゃく)等の方薬をもつて此れを治す。

These illnesses can be cured with the medicines prescribed by skilled physicians such as Water Holder, Water Carrier, Jīvaka, and Pien Ch’üeh.

Such maladies can be cured by medicine prescribed by physicians, such as Zhisui, Liushui, Jivaka, and Bianque.

二には心の病、所謂三毒・乃至(ないし)八万四千の病なり。

The second category is illness of the mind. These are the three poisons and the eighty-four thousand illnesses.

The second type is illness of the mind, which arises from [earthly desires caused by] the three poisons [of greed, anger, and stupidity]. There are as many as 84,000 kinds of these illnesses.

仏に有らざれば二天・三仙も治しがたし

Only a Buddha can cure them; thus they are beyond the healing powers of the two deities and the three ascetics.

Neither the two gods nor the three hermits of the non-Buddhist teachings can cure such diseases. Only the Buddha can.
