Gosho 四恩抄 The Four Debts of Gratitude

Concerning the debt owed to the Law, the Law is the teacher of all Buddhas.

Regarding the gratitude one owes to the Law, the Law is the master of all Buddhas.

It is because of the Law that the Buddhas are worthy of respect.

All Buddhas are venerable because of this Law.

Therefore, those who wish to repay their debt to the Buddha must first repay the debt they owe to the Law.

Thus, if one wishes to repay one’s debt of gratitude to the Buddhas, he should also do so to the Law.

As for the debt owed to the Buddhist Order, both the treasure of the Buddha and the treasure of the Law are invariably perpetuated by the Order.

Next, regarding the gratitude one owes to the priesthood, the treasures of the Buddha and the Law will invariably endure through the priesthood.

To illustrate, without firewood, there can be no fire, and if there is no earth, trees and plants cannot grow.

This can be compared to a fire that cannot be ignited without firewood or to plants and trees that cannot grow without the earth.

Likewise, even though Buddhism existed, without the members of the Order who studied it and passed it on, it would never have been transmitted throughout the two thousand years of the Former and Middle Days into the Latter Day of the Law.

Even though the Buddhist Law has always existed, if it had been for the priesthood who mastered and transmitted the Law, it would not have been passed on through the 2,000 years of the Former and Middle Days of the Law to the Latter Day of the Law.

Accordingly, the Great Collection Sutra states: “Suppose that, in the last of the fivefive-hundred-year periods, there should be someone who harasses unlearned monks without precepts by accusing them of some offense. You should know that this person is extinguishing the great torch of Buddhism.”

Therefore, a passage from the Sutra of the Great Assembly sates:

After the fifth Five-hundred-year Period, if one attacks a priest who lacks wisdom and precepts by pointing out his shortcomings, know that this person is extinguishing the great lamp of the Buddha Law.

Therefore, the debt we owe to the Order is difficult to recompense.

It is difficult to repay one’s debt of gratitude to the priesthood.
