Gosho 如説修行抄 On practicing according to the Buddha’s teachings

敵有る時は刀杖(とうじょう)弓箭(きゅうせん)を持つ可し

When one must face enemies, one needs a sword, a stick, or a bow and arrows.

When there are enemies, you should take up a sword, stave, and bows and arrows.

敵無き時は弓箭(へい)(じょう)何にかせん、

When one has no enemies, however, such weapons are of no use at all.

When there are no enemies, you do not need such weapons.

今の時は(ごん)(きょう)(そく)実教の敵と成るなり、

In this age, the provisional teachings have turned into enemies of the true teaching.

In the present time of the Latter Day of the Law, the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings are the enemies of the Lotus Sutra.

一乗流布(るふ)の時は権教有つて敵と成りて・まぎらはしくば実教より之を責む可し、

When the time is right to propagate the teaching of the one vehicle, the provisional teachings become enemies. When they are a source of confusion, they must be thoroughly refuted from the standpoint of the true teaching.

When the teaching of the one vehicle of Buddhahood is spread, all the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings become its enemies. When the Lotus Sutra and pre-Lotus Sutra teachings are confused, you first should refute the pre-Lotus Sutra teachings using the true Mahayana.

是を(しょう)(しゃく)二門の中には法華経の折伏と申すなり、

Of the two types of practice, this is shakubuku, the practice of the Lotus Sutra.

Of the two practices of shōju and shakubuku, this is called shakubuku, based on the Lotus Sutra.

天台云く「法華折伏・()権門(ごんもん)()」と、まことに(ゆえ)あるかな。

With good reason T’ien-t’ai stated, “The Lotus Sutra is the teaching of shakubuku, the refutation of the provisional doctrines.”

Tiantai’s statement, “The Lotus Sutra is the teaching of shakubuku, the refutation of the provisional doctrines” is, indeed, based on reason.
