Gosho 太田殿女房御返事(即身成仏抄)On Attaining Buddhahood in One’s Present Form

月支(がっし)より漢土(かんど)へ経論わたす人一百七十六人なり

There were 176 persons who conveyed the sutras and treatises of Buddhism from India to China.

One hundred seventy-six translators brought the sutras and treatise from India to China.

()の中に()(じゅう)一人(ばか)りこそ教主釈尊の経文に(わたくし)(ことば)入れぬ人にては候へ、

Among these, Kumārajīva alone passed along the sutra texts of Shakyamuni, the lord of teachings, just as they were without adding any private opinions of his own.

Among them, Kumarajiva was the only one who did not include his personal views when he translated the sutras preached by the Great Master Shakyamuni Buddha into Chinese.

一百七十五人の中・羅什より先後(せんご)・一百六十四人は羅什の智をもつて知り候べし、

Among the remaining 175 persons, 164 lived shortly before or after the time of Kumārajīva, and their work can be judged in the light of Kumārajīva’s wisdom.

It was Kumarajiva’s wisdom that exposed the questionable quality of the translations made by the 164 translators [who preceded him].

羅什(きた)らせ給いて前後一百六十四人が誤りも顕れ新訳(しんやく)の十一人が誤りも(あらわ)れ又()ざかしくなりて候も羅什の故なり。

In fact, his work brought to light the errors of these 164 men and also the errors of the eleven translators who later produced the so-called new translations, though they were somewhat cleverer than the earlier translators because they had Kumārajīva’s works to guide them.

His appearance uncovered the mistakes of these 164 translators and the intentional distortions in the works of the 11 translators in latter ages as well. Furthermore, these 11 translators created their translators in a cunning manner, exploiting the works Kumarajiva.
