Rulers of the Land of the Gods

The Rulers of the Land of the Gods

To examine one’s face one has only to look in a clear mirror, and to understand the rise and fall of a nation’s fortunes, there is no mirror more revealing than that provided by the Buddhist teachings.

If one wishes to examine one’s face, one must only look into a clear mirror. Likewise, when one tries to understand the nation’s rise and decline, the most superior source is that the Buddhist mirror.

When one examines the various Mahayana sutras such as the Benevolent Kings Sutra, Golden Light Sutra, Sovereign Kings Sutra, Protection Sutra, Nirvana Sutra, and Lotus Sutra, one sees that there are cases in which, by adhering to Buddhist teachings, a nation may prosper and its people enjoy long life, and others in which, while likewise adhering to Buddhist teachings, the nation is brought to ruin and its people’s lives are cut short.

When I refer to the various Mahayana sutras, such as the Sutra of the Benevolent King, Sutra of the Golden Light, Sovereign Kings Sutra, Protection Sutra, Nirvana Sutra, and Lotus Sutra, they all make the following points; Depending on the Buddhist teaching that the people follow, either the nation will prosper and the people’s lives will be prolonged, or the nation will come to ruin and the people’s lives will be cut short.
