一部・八巻・二十八(ぽん)受持(じゅじ)読誦(どくじゅ)随喜(ずいき)護持(ごじ)等するは(こう)なり、

To accept, uphold, read, recite, take delight in, and protect all the eight volumes and twenty-eight chapters of the Lotus Sutra is called the comprehensive practice.

To embrace, read, recite, rejoice in, and protect the entire text of the Lotus Sutra of 28 chapters in eight volumes is called the comprehensive practice.

方便品寿量品等を受持し乃至護持するは略なり、

To accept, uphold, and protect the “Expedient Means” chapter and the “Life Span” chapter is called the abbreviated practice.

To embrace and protect the Hōben and Juryō chapters is called the concise practice.

(ただ)一四句偈(くげ)乃至(ないし)題目(ばか)りを唱えとなうる者を護持するは要なり、

And simply to chant one four-phrase verse or the daimoku, and to protect those who do so, is called the essential practice.

And to recite one four-phrase verse and exclusively chant the Daimoku and to protect those who perform both is called the essential practice.

広略要の中には題目は要の内なり。

Hence, among these three kinds of practice, comprehensive, abbreviated, and essential, the daimoku is defined as the essential practice.

Among the comprehensive, concise, and essential practice, the Daimoku is one of the essential practices.
