Gosho 持妙法華問答抄 Questions and Answers on Embracing the Lotus Sutra

かかる・あさましき捨者(すてもの)の仏になるを以て如来の本意(ほんい)とし法華経の規模(きも)とす、

The Thus Come One now declared as his true intention that these pitiful, abandoned persons could indeed attain Buddhahood, using this as a standard to demonstrate the superiority of the Lotus Sutra.

However, Shakyamuni Buddha’s true intention was to enable these lamentably discarded persons to attain Buddhahood. This is the essential point of the Lotus Sutra.

(これ)()つて天台の云く「華厳大品(だいぼん)も之を()すること(あた)わず、

Therefore, T’ien-t’ai stated: “Neither the Flower Garland Sutra nor the Larger Wisdom Sutra could cure [the plight of these persons of the two vehicles].

For this reason, the Great Teacher Tiantai stated: Neither the Flower Garland Sutra nor the Great Sutra on the Perfection of Wisdom could cure people of the two vehicles.

(ただ)法華のみ有りて()く無学をして(かえ)つて善根を生じ仏道を成ずることを()せしむ

The Lotus Sutra alone was able to produce the roots of goodness in those who have nothing more to learn, and to make it possible for them to attain the Buddha way.

Only the Lotus Sutra enables those even at the stage of arhat to accumulate good causes and attain enlightenment.

所以(ゆえ)に妙と称す、

Therefore, the sutra is called myō, or wonderful.

This is called Myō.

 又闡提(せんだい)は心有り(なお)()(ぶつ)す可し

 Again, the icchantikas, or persons of incorrigible disbelief, nevertheless have minds, and so it is still possible for them to attain Buddhahood.

 The great Teacher also stated: Icchantika retain their heart, and therefore, they have the potential to attain enlightenment.

 二乗は()を滅す心(しょう)ず可からず

 But persons of the two vehicles have annihilated consciousness, and therefore cannot arouse the mind that aspires to enlightenment.

 On the other hand, the people of the two vehicles completely eliminate their wisdom and heart.

 法華能く治す(また)称して妙と()す」と云云

 And yet the Lotus Sutra can cure them, which is why it is called myō, or wonderful.”  

 The Lotus Sutra, however, can cure even this. Again, this is called Myō.
