Gosho 聖愚問答抄 Question and Answers between a Sage and a Foolish Man

()れ妙法蓮華経とは一切衆生の仏性なり

Myoho-renge-kyo is the Buddha nature of all living beings.

To begin with, Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo is the Buddha nature of all living beings.

仏性とは法性(ほっしょう)なり、法性とは菩提(ぼだい)なり、

The Buddha nature is the Dharma nature, and the Dharma nature is enlightenment.

The Buddha nature is the true nature of the Law. The true nature of the Law is enlightenment.

The Buddha nature possessed by Shakyamuni, Many Treasures, and the Buddhas of the ten directions; by Superior Practices, Boundless Practices, and the other Bodhisattvas of the Earth; by Universal Worthy, Manjushrī, Shāriputra Mudgalyāyana, and the others; by the great Brahmā and the lord Shakra; by the deities of the sun and moon, the morning star, the seven stars in the Big Dipper in the northern sky, the twenty-eight constellations, and the countless other stars; by the heavenly gods, the earthly deities, the dragon deities, the eight kinds of nonhuman beings, and the human and heavenly beings who gathered in the great assembly to hear the Buddha’s preaching; by King Yama—in short, by all living beings from the realm where there is neither thought nor no thought above the clouds down to the flames in the lowest depths of hell—the Buddha nature that all these beings possess is called by the name Myoho-renge-kyo.

Thus, the Buddha nature, which is inherent in all living beings, is called Myoho-Renge-Kyo. It is the Buddha nature of Shakyamuni, Tahō, and all Buddhas in the ten directions; [the Bodhisattvas of the Earth] such as Jōgyō and Muhebgyō; the other bodhisattvas, and Shakyamuni’s disciples, such as Bodhisattva Universally Worthy, Manjushri, Shariputra, and Maudgalyayana. It is the Buddha nature Heavenly King Daibon, Heavenly King Taishaku, the sun and moon, the evening star, the seven northern stars, the 28 constellations, immeasurable numbers of stars, the deities of the heavens, and the deities of the earth. It also is the Buddha nature of the eight kinds of nonhuman beings that protect Buddhism, such as dragon deities, those of the worlds of humanity and rapture, and King Emma. From the top of the clouds over the fourth heaven in the world of formlessness to the bottom of the flames of hell, this inherent Buddha nature is called Myoho-Renge-Kyo.
