Gosho 曾谷入道殿許御書 On the five Guides of Propagation


 今は(すで)に末法に入つて在世の結縁(けちえん)の者は漸漸(ぜんぜん)衰微(すいび)して(ごん)(じつ)の二機皆(ことごと)く尽きぬ。

At present, however, we have already entered the third period, the Latter Day of the Law.The persons who formed a relationship with the Buddha during the time he was in the world have little by little diminished in number, and all those who have the capacity to attain Buddhahood through the two categories of provisional and true sutras have disappeared.

Now is the Latter Day of the Law. Those who formed a karmic relationship with [Shakyamuni] Buddha during his lifetime have gradually declined in number, and those who had the capacity to attain Buddhahoodt hrough the pre-Lotus Sutra and the Lotus Sutra teachings, have completely disappeared.

()()(きょう)菩薩(ぼさつ)末世に出現して(どっ)()()たしむるの時なり。

Now is the time for Bodhisattva Never Disparaging to appear in the world in this latter age and to sound his poison-coated drum.

This is the time when someone like Bodhisattva Never Disparaging will make his advent and beat the poison drum.

(しか)るに今時の学者時機に迷惑して(あるい)は小乗を弘通(ぐつう)し或は権大乗を授与(じゅよ)し或は一乗を演説すれども題目の五字を以て下種と為す可きの由来(ゆらい)を知らざるか。

And yet, inspite of this fact, the scholars of today, because they are confused about the categories of time and capacity, in some cases propagate Hinayana doctrines, or in others transmit the teachings of provisional Mahayana or preach the one vehicle. But none of them realize that they should be utilizing the five characters of the daimoku, since this is the means for implanting the seed of Buddhahood.

Nonetheless, modern scholars are confused about the time and the people’s capacity. Some propagate Hinayana Buddhism, while others teach provisional Mahayana. Still others give lectures on the one vehicle of Buddhahood, but do not know why the five characters of the Daimoku should be the seed [of Buddhahood].
