On the Ten Chapters

　　　文永八年五月　五十歳 御作。

　　　　May 1271 (Age: 50)

真実に円の行に順じて常に口ずさ(吟)みにすべき事は南無妙法蓮華経なり、心に存すべき事は一念三千の観法なり、

The true perfect teaching practice is to keep the mouth constantly reciting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, whatever the occasion, and to keep the mind fixed on the meditation on the three thousand realms in a single moment of life.

In accordance with the true practice of the perfect teachings, what one always must chant is Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo. Based on the doctrine of ichinen sanzen （three thousand realms in a single liife-moment）, what one should contemplate is the practice of the observation of the mind.

これは智者の行(ぎょう)解(げ)なり・

This is the practice and understanding of persons of wisdom.

However, this is the practice and understanding of men of wisdom.

日本国の在家(ざいけ)の者には但(ただ)一向(いっこう)に南無妙法蓮華経ととな(唱)へさすべし、

For the ordinary lay believers of Japan, however, it is sufficient if they concentrate solely on the recitation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

One must lead the people of Japan to chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo single-mindedly.

名(な)は必ず体(たい)にいたる徳あり

The name will invariably invoke all the blessings of the thing itself.

The characters of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo definitely possess the virtue to lead us to attain enlightenment.
