Gosho 一代聖教大意 The Meaning of the Sacred Teachings of the Buddha’s lifetime

御年(おんとし)五十七の夏四月の比(ころ)、荊州(けいしゅう)の玉(ぎょく)泉(せん)寺(じ)と申す処にて御弟子・章安(しょうあん)大師と申す人に説ききかせ給いし止(し)観(かん)十巻あり、

But in the summer of his fifty-seventh year [594], around the fourth month, when he was at a temple called Yü-ch’üan-ssu in Ching-chou, he delivered a series of lectures to his disciple, the Great Teacher Chang-an, which became Great Concentration and Insight in ten volumes.

Around the fourth month during the summer, at the age of 57, the Great Teacher Tiantai delivered a lecture to his disciple, the Great Teacher Zhangan, at a temple called Yuquansi in Jing Province. This lecture became the ten volumes of the Great Concentration and Insight.

上(かみ)の四帖(ちょう)に猶(なお)を(惜)しみ給いて但(ただ)六即・四種三昧(ざんまい)等・計(ばかり)の法門にてありしに五の巻より十境・十乗を立てて一念三千の法門を書き給へり、

The first four volumes of the work still hold back from full revelation and deal only with such doctrines as the six stages of practice and the four forms of meditation. But from the fifth volume on, he discusses the ten objects of meditation and the ten meditations and describes the doctrine of three thousand realms in a single moment of life.

In the first four volumes of the text, the doctrine of ichinen sanzen was not yet revealed. Only the doctrines of the six stages of practice and the four forms of meditation were preached. But in the fifth volume, the practice of the observation of the ten objects and the ten meditations were taught, and the doctrine of ichinen sanzen was expounded.

此れを妙(みょう)楽(らく)大師末代(まつだい)の人に勧進(かんじん)して言(いわ)く「並(ならび)に三千を以て指南(しなん)と為す○請(こ)うらくは尋(たず)ね読まん者心に異縁(いえん)無かれ」文

The GreatTeacher Miao-lo, in his words of encouragement to people of later ages, says:“[When at last he revealed the method of meditation in Great Concentration and Insight], he at the same time employed the ‘three thousand realms’ as a way to understand. . . . I hope that those who read this work and seek to understand it will not allow their minds to be distracted by anything else.”

Calling out to the people of future generations, the Great Teacher Miaolo stated,“At the same time, he employed the three thousand realms as the way to understand the true nature of life….Those who seek to understand this doctrine should not harbor doubt in their minds.”
