Reply to Nambu Rokurō Saburō

        文永十年八月三日 五十二歳御作

        August 3, 1273 (Age: 52)

()の上仏・()軽品(きょうぼん)に自身の過去の現証を引いて云く()の時に(ひと)りの菩薩有り(じょう)()(きょう)と名く等云云。

Moreover, the Buddha, speaking of the events of a past lifetime, says in the “Never Disparaging” chapter, “At this time there was a bodhisattva named Never Disparaging

In the Bodhisattva Never Disparaging chapter of the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha cited actual proof that he had experienced in one of his past existences. He stated,At that time, there was one Bodhisattva called Never Disparaging.

又云く悪口(あっく)罵詈(めり)等せらる、又云く或は(じょう)(もく)()(しゃく)を以て之を打擲(ちょうちゃく)す等云云、

. . . . they spoke ill of him and cursed him . . . some among the group would take sticks of wood or tiles and stones and beat and pelt him.”

He went on to say, Bodhisattva Never Disparaging was spoken ill and cursed,and he was beaten with wooden staves and sticks, or pelted with stones and tiles.

釈尊()(いん)()所行(しょぎょう)を引き()せて末法の(はじめ)(かん)(れい)したもう

In this way, Shakyamuni Buddha cited his own practice as a bodhisattva in the past to encourage and hearten [the votary of the Lotus Sutra] in the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law.

This indicates that Shakyamuni Buddha is inspiring and encouraging [the votary of the Lotus Sutra who lives] at the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law by referring to his own practices to attain Buddhahood.
