Gosho 開目抄 Opening of the Eyes

二辺の中には・いうべし、

But of these two courses, surely the latter is the one to choose.

Ultimately, between these two options, I chose to speak out at any cost.

王難等・出来の時は退転すべくは一度に思ひ(とどま)るべしと(しばら)()すらいし程に宝塔品の六難()()これなり、

If I were to falter in my determination in the face of persecutions by the sovereign, however, it would be better not to speak out. While thinking this over, I recalled the teachings of the “Treasure Tower” chapter on the six difficult and nine easy acts.

In the face of persecutions from the sovereign, however, I hesitated any thought to myself that if I could discard this Buddhism, I could stop all of this thinking right away. At that moment, I remembered the six difficult and nine easy acts expounded in the Treasure Tower chapter of the Lotus Sutra.

Persons like myself who are of paltry strength might still be able to lift Mount Sumeru and toss it about; persons like myself who are lacking in super natural powers might still shoulder a load of dry grass and yet remain unburned in the fire at the end of the kalpa of decline; and persons like myself who are without wisdom might still read and memorize as many sutras as there are sands in the Ganges. But such acts are not difficult, we are told, when compared to the difficulty of embracing even one phrase or verse of the Lotus Sutra in the Latter Day of the Law.

Even if feeble people like us were to seize Mount Sumeru and fling it far off; even if people like us who lack transcendent powers were to [walk across a conflagration] without getting burned while carrying a bundle of dried grass on our backs; or even if unenlightened people like us were to read and grasp innumerable sutras, it would be much more difficult to embrace a single phrase or verse of the Lotus Sutra in the Latter Day of the Law. I was convinced that this applies to me.

今度・強盛の菩提(ぼだい)(しん)を・をこして退転せじと願しぬ。

Nevertheless,I vowed to summon up a powerful and unconquerable desire for the salvation of all beings and never to falter in my efforts.

Finally, with a strong seeking spirit, I made a vow that I would never regress in my faith.
