Gosho 日女御前御返事(本尊相貌抄)The modality of the Gohonzon

 此等の仏・菩薩・大聖(だいしょう)等・総じて序品列坐の二界八番の(ざっ)(しゅう)等一人ももれず、此の御本尊の中に住し給い妙法五字の光明(こうみょう)にてらされて、(ほん)()尊形(そんぎょう)となる。

Without exception, all these Buddhas, bodhisattvas, great sages, and, in general, all the various beings of the two worlds and the eight groups who appear in the “Introduction” chapter of the Lotus Sutra dwell in this Gohonzon. Illuminated by the light of the five characters of the Mystic Law, they display the dignified attributes that they inherently possess.

There were Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and great sages, including eight kinds of protective beings dwelling in the world of desire and world of form, who were present during the preaching of the Introduction chapter of the Lotus Sutra. All of them, without exception, reside in the Gohonzon. Illuminated by the light of the five characters of Myoho-renge-Kyo, they all manifest the true and venerable nature that they inherently possess.

All these Buddhas, bodhisattvas, great saints, and all the miscellaneous crowd of the two worlds and the eight groups who appear in the 'Introduction' chapter of the Lotus Sutra reside first and last in this Gohonzon and illuminated by the light of five characters of the marvelous Law, they become the venerable form that they inherently possess.

是を本尊とは申すなり。

This is the object of devotion.

This is what we call the Gohonzon.

 The Gohonzon means this.

経に云く「諸法実相」是なり。

This is what is meant when the sutra says “the true aspect of all phenomena.”

In the sutra, this is described as the true entity of all phenomena.
